Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: they are taking a big chance on me, and they must think i can succeed at their school. No one at my school has ever been accepted to an Ivy.
Good luck everyone… see you this evening at 5pm

april fool!

how did you find out you got in, if we can’t find out til 5:00 pm?

I really did get in. I knew since December. I was a “likely” candidate. Not only did I get a letter but I also got a phone call. They asked me to change my decision from RD to ED. But I didn’t want to.

Here’s the e-mail I got yesterday:

Admissions Decisions Release on Thursday, April 1‏
From: Penn Admissions Eapps (eapps@admissions.upenn.edu)
Sent: Tue 3/30/10 2:13 PM

March 30, 2010

Dear Brannet,

I hope the winter has treated you well and that you are excited to have started your senior spring! I hope, too, that you’ve had a chance to get to know Penn a bit better since we sent you your “Likely” letter, perhaps getting a sense of what your four (or more!) years on this campus could be like by joining our Facebook group, following us on Twitter, or enjoying our Website.

Back in December you received a “Likely” letter from Penn which stated that as long as you “complete your term with a comparable level of performance and achievement [to your prior years of high school] and… remain in good standing throughout the academic year,” you would be admitted to Penn in April.

and today I checked online and had this:

Dear Brannet,

Congratulations! On behalf of the entire Penn community, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the University of Pennsylvania as a member of the Wharton School Class of 2014.

Accepted to Wharton RD! I was a deferred ED candidate.

Reflection

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

OKAY. So look at my stats above. I am not special. I didn’t even want to go to Penn, but my mom made me apply. The only reason that I can think of that got me in is my compassion. I am a very compassionate, driven person and that probably made me stand out. Now… the four reasons why I shouldn’t have gotten in:

I didn’t write the optional essay.

I didn’t even respond to my interviewer’s email. (I didn’t interview)

Look at my GPA and SAT scores… I am not Hispanic or Black (minority).

I live in Philly and I’ve never even visited.

But of course I’m going to go now! I’ve been rejected from Cornell, Duke, Northwestern, and Brown… but accepted to UPENN. Crazy, right?

Decision: Rejected

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2240 (M:700 R:760 W:780)

SAT II: Literature: 800, Math I: 650

Summer Activities: Work

Essays: Not too bad. I thought I was creative.

Teacher Recommendation: Good

Counselor Rec: I have no idea.

Interview: None…None was offered.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: So white

Gender: F

Income Bracket: 50K…ish

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Female architecture major…not too many females end up in that field.

Reflection

Strengths: Good at debate. Leadership experience. Drive.

Weaknesses: Lack of motivation…at times.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe my essays. I also only took one AP class (and I’m taking another AP test that my school doesn’t offer a class for), but my school only offers a few AP’s…

General Comments:I really thought I had a pretty good chance. I wasn’t expecting to get in by any means, but I at least thought that I would be pretty competitive.

I have read a number of posts in the ED and now one in the RD forums about Philly residents being shocked about their acceptances to Penn, and I want to explain something to everyone. Philadelphia residents have a HUGE advantage when applying to Penn. They are not considered in a pool with everyone else, they are only considered in a pool with other Philadelphia residents. Penn wants to maintain a positive relationship with the city, and so they accept huge numbers of Philly residents who often have scores much lower than the average applicant. Also being first generation and in a lower socio-economic bracket seriously helps (it’s not rare in Philadelphia).

Once again I just wanted to inform people who were shocked by their acceptances (and any non-Philly residents with higher stats who were rejected) to fully understand at least part of the reasoning behind it. I don’t want to discredit anyone regarding his or her acceptance. The amazing thing about Penn is that it acts as an equalizer for those of us from Philly who may not have had as much opportunity otherwise.

ACEPTED! woot (soo greatful!)

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): a lot. Im on vacation so I dont have my resume, but my interviewer even said “Wow. When do you have time for yourself?”

My first one was a humorous essay about how Im late to everything and the anxiety I have whenever Im late. My optional essay was about how I found my uncle dead in the kitchen. I wrote it in a weird manner, with flashbacks and personification. I think these essays are what swayed their descison. just saying lol.

Teacher Recommendation: Very good.

Counselor Rec: I didnt read it, but he likes me so i think it was good.

Additional Rec: n/a

Weaknesses: my sat scores ugh.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: God’s grace. And because given the background and the school I come from, I’ve done well…i think.

General Comments: Im so so so excited. Only ivy i applied to because where I come from, you just dont get accepted into them. I finished my application the night before and didnt even want to submit. So happy I did <3

Strengths: good essays (made me different from typical Chinese applicants?) put work into application

Weaknesses: SAT I (not bad i think, but compared with other applicants around me it’s not good. Asian students are really good at exams)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: luck! more than 120 applied to penn in our city this year and only 3 got in! many who got rejected are very competitive applicants (with international first prices or somethin’)… and i don’t think i showed my love to penn during the interview. the interviewer asked me wot if i got into all the schools i applied to, say Columbia engineering and Penn engineering, which would i choose. i was like “then i’ll choose carnegie mellon engineering”… and he was like “i don’t disagree.” later i thought wot a stupid answer?! and actually i applied to Penn’s M&T dual degree program which is a hell and i feel good that i didn’t get into it. the interviewer asked me why not other schools’ dual degree program, like Stanford, MIT? and i was thinking “what the *! i don’t even know other schools have this kind of !" and i said somethin’ like "i like the city of philadelphia (even though i’ve never been there) and wharton is the best business school!@#$%^&#$%&$%^&” hahahaha but it’s all okay now. God works…
