I really think people overemphasize statistics, so instead of listing my test scores and class rank, I will tell you a bit about myself. I am well rounded yet passionate. I plan to have a career in scientific research, yet I love history. I love writing, yet I love playing music. So in my application, I tried to present myself in this way as well as show my love for Penn. Yes my test scores and grades are somewhat relevant, but I do not think I got in just because I had certain numbers. I truly believe that it is a holistic process.
Good luck to everyone in your college search.

Essays: My common app essay was about the difficulties of learning English when i came to the US. The essay was pretty good but i didnt feel it was the strongest of my essays. My “Community Penn” essay, i felt, was the strongest of the three. I wrote about my first impression of the school when i visited during freshman year for a school trip to watch the Quaker football team play. I did my page 217 essay about my future as if i was writing after retirement. Pretty good, i thought.

Teacher Recs: I think this was one of my strongest parts. Both of my teachers that wrote the rec letter had mentioned to me that i was one of the best students they had seen in their respective subject (calc and english), i think they wrote pretty good rec letters though i did not read them. Also, my counselor sent a letter (last minute) from a college professor from the community college i go to who wrote an unsolicited letter to my counselor stating how i was one of the best students he as had.

GPA: 3.7u 4.3w
School type: private
ACT: 29

I took the SAT and SAT II’s but decided not to submit them since all Penn requires is the ACT if you decide to submit that.

EC’s: Various clubs and activities…nothing really that significant to be honest other than rowing. I won the national championship for crew, and the year before I got third place.

Community service: nada

Academic honors: On and off between highest and high honors…national spanish honors society and got gold medals twice in the national spanish exam…If I had to guess I’d be top 15% in my class but we do not rank so I have no idea.

Commonapp essay: really good, I spent a lot of time polishing this one.
Why Penn? essay: also really good, I found some genuine reasons why I want to go to Penn that I think strengthened my app.
Recs: Im good friends with both the teachers I asked to write my recs so I imagine that they were very good…guidance counselor also wrote a good one most likely.
Pg 217 essay: did not do that crap, when the penn rep came to my school she flat out told us it was a waste of time for everyone involved.

Location: PA (Philadelphia area)

Hook: I was a recruited athlete so I pretty much knew that I would get in a month ago when the coach said he would support my app but I found out yesterday for sure…While academically I am pretty good my EC’s are weak besides the one sport I do so I may not have gotten in had I not been recruited…

Comments: Congrats to anyone that got in. I’m looking forward to spending the next couple years with you guys at Penn. If you did not get in I hope you will find a college that fits your wants and needs.

Because of my school’s proximity to Penn a lot of kids apply each year and a lot end up getting in…this year 10 applied ED and there are 4 who I know of that were accepted. Last year 8 applied and only 1 got denied.
