my 12th Grade 1st term marks were mentioned in my Transcript (I am an international student. The academic year starts in April). Do i still need to send a Mid Year Report??

Awesome, daretorun! I feel the same way–I was in no way a “stellar” candidate, and I still do not really know why I got accepted. I know that I am determined enough to succeed, so, right now, I am just trying to wrap my head around being part of the Penn Class of 2015. I can’t wait to meet my fellow Quakers! Everyone who applied to Penn clearly has a bright future and I cannot be more happy for all of us!

lol thx for your compliment pennalum XD
although I totally screwed up on the formatting for post…aiya!

can’t wait til I get on campus!

- Job/Work Experience:
- Volunteer/Community service: been volunteering at the library since 7th grade, also do random work in the community.
- Summer Activities:
- Essays: What do I put here? I wrote my Common App about my religious development and my supplement about Penn’s robust strengths.
- Teacher Recommendation: Got one from my Physics/Chem teacher, one from my US history teacher
- Counselor Rec: Don’t know what to say here
- Additional Rec: Got one from the volunteer coordinator at the library
- Interview: I got two interviews, one in person with a Wharton alum and one over the phone with the Co-Chair of admissions in my state. Both went well I guess.

Reflection

* Strengths: My essay, academics were alright
- Weaknesses: Extracurriculars were a bit lazy, academics weren’t amazing
- Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I definitely think it was the essay, in which I tried to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in Penn. I obviously didn’t eclipse other applicants in the objective category.
- Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t applied anywhere else yet, since I did early decision here.

General Comments: Can someone explain this financial aid thing to me? I got a package online, which is only a loan for 5,500 dollars and Penn’s website says all packages are loan free. This obviously doesn’t include 2010’s taxes and FAFSA, but that sounds awfully low considering Penn costs 56, 000. What’s the deal?

[Early decision admit rate falls to 26 percent | The Daily Pennsylvanian](http://www.dailypennsylvanian.com/article/early-decision-admit-rate-falls-26-percent)

Even though there was an 18% surge in applicants (4500 as opposed to last year’s 3800), UPenn did not admit more people than it did last year (about 1200 for both years). I feel really lucky.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Pure stats, unique internship experiences, to-be published research paper?
[] Weaknesses: Essays, essays, essays. Having pretty average EC’s. No major awards. No business-related activities. Pretty much everything
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, seeing all the amazing stats of those who got deferred/rejected I feel extremely lucky to have even been deferred. I have no idea what put me in that defer pile instead of the reject pile. Perhaps I stood out with my math/sci EC’s just enough so that they didn’t straight up reject me? That being said, I think this is just further testament to how random the entire application process is.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere else so far

[/ul]General Comments: To the accepted: Congratulations!! All of your hard work finally paid off!! Now you can chill and enjoy the rest of senior year haha
To the deferred: There is still hope for RD!
To the rejected: Don’t give up hope, this is just one school. There are many more amazing schools out there. Apply to some, and I’m confident you will end up somewhere amazing!
*Note to future applicants: start working on your essays early, like August early! You may think that you have enough time to write them in a week or a few days, but trust me that is not the case! I had to learn that the hard way.
Again, I feel veryy lucky to have been deferred. There were a lot of rejectees I saw who definitely deserved to be deferred more than me. Good luck to all!

Acceptance count through #187:

Accepted - 81
Deferred - 16
Rejected - 21

CC Acceptance Rate = 69%

Wow, Penn is all ****in over the place. I think I might take a shot at wharton after reading this thread

can someone post what the deferred message says? just curious

Here is what the deferred message says:

Dear XXXXXXXXX,

The Admissions Selection Committee has chosen to defer our decision on your Early Decision application to the University of Pennsylvania. After careful consideration, the committee has decided to wait until the Regular Decision notification date of March 30, 2011, to make a final decision. We realize that you may be disappointed with this delay, but please know that your commitment to join Penn`s community will be thoughtfully evaluated during the Regular Decision committee process.
This year, Penn saw its largest-ever pool of Early Decision applicants, with a truly impressive set of talents and achievements. Penn defers less than a third of its Early Decision applicants, and we do so only after serious consideration of their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Last year, approximately 10% of deferred applicants were admitted to Penn during Regular Decision.
The Admissions Selection Committee chooses to defer a decision when we wish to have more time to evaluate an application in the context of the broader applicant pool. Because we want to give your candidacy the fullest consideration, we ask that you have your guidance counselor send us a mid-year report that includes your first-semester grades when they become available. The "Midyear Report" form is available on the Common Application`s website.

As a candidate whose application has been deferred to Regular Decision, you are no longer bound by the Early Decision agreement. Please be sure to read the Frequently Asked Questions for deferred applicants on your Decision Portal for additional information.

On behalf of the entire Admissions Selection Committee, I thank you for applying to Penn.

Sincerely,

Eric J. Furda C’87

Here is what the accepted message says :

Dear XXXXX,

Hurrah, hurrah Pennsylvania!

Congratulations! Welcome to the University of Pennsylvania and the School you applied to Class of 2015! On behalf of the entire Penn community, we are delighted that you chose Penn for your undergraduate education. Our Admissions Selection Committee members appreciate the efforts made by you and those who have supported you. We also appreciate the hard work and individual excellence reflected in your application.

Penn received over 4,500 Early Decision applications, our largest number ever. You and your fellow Early Decision applicants are the most widely accomplished in Penn
s distinguished history—scholars, scientists, artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, and more. You hail from 44 states and 32 nations. I look forward to welcoming you to campus as part of Penn
s 259th class since Benjamin Franklin founded the University.

Through your search for knowledge, devotion to service, and engagement within your community, you will contribute to the vitality of the university and to the city of Philadelphia. In your academic and personal pursuits, you excel at the highest levels. In all these ways, you already demonstrate commitment to the goals and philosophy of this university. Happily, this is only the beginning!

I urge you, as one of the newest members of the Penn community, to make these next four years a springboard for lifelong learning—take risks, explore, discover.

This is the beginning of a spectacular journey.

For the Red and the Blue,
