** Decision: Accepted [ /b][ /color][ /size]
School applied to: CAS[ /size]

**Objective:[ /b]
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): CR 700 M 710 W 670, 1410/2080
[ *] ACT: DNT
[ *] SAT II: US History 700, Lit 740, Math 2 640 (I think?)
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Not sure, 4.04 weighted (not a ton offered at my school)
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 15/190 (I was top 5% til a new school was built and class split)
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH 4
[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis): None
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: Dual Enrollment/AP Calc and College Writing, Honors Physics, Business Mentorship Program at JMU, Advanced Choir, Jazz Band, Honors Government
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Lots of acting, best actor/honors actor for District, Regional and VTA (Virginia Theater Association) type stuff. Some academic stuff too, but nothing HUGE

[ /list]**Subjective:[ /b]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mostly theater, I also have lacrosse, football, and tennis (the last of which is still current for me). I’m the actor/singer of my school. My main ECs involve musical/play leads along with Drama Club President and some other club involvement
[ *] Job/Work Experience: None
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Various stuff, Haunted Cave at national park, running chains for junior league football, environmental pick-ups, things like that. I don’t have any that have monster hours in them, but I do have a good variety that adds up.
[ *] Summer Activities: VA Summer Residential Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts (That’s definitely my biggest, and I scored highest out of my county in the adjudication) Other than that, some theater, learning piano, my own ways of being productive for the most part
[ *] Essays: I’m in the upper crust of my school’s toughest English class as a writer, and I went through multiple drafts. My personal was VERY personal and dear to me; it spoke of a huge ongoing struggle in my life. My Why Penn was very heartfelt, with parallels to Ben Franklin and earnest interests/speculations pertaining to my potential time at Penn.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: One Glowing (drama teacher) and one that was also pretty darn braggy (my college writing teacher)
[ *] Counselor Rec: The counselor this year was new, but I had some good chats with her. She pretty much hit my good ECs and explained one of the lighter aspects of my course load.
[ *] Additional Rec: None
[ *] Interview: None

[ /list]**Other[ /b]
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): VA
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: Low
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None that I know of… Maybe low income?

[ /list]**Reflection[ /b]
[ *] Strengths: Theater EC, Summer Gov School, Essays
[ *] Weaknesses: SATs, Courseload/GPA
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly think it was my essays, my area’s level of competition, and the amount of info I soaked in at my visit to Penn
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t applied anywhere else

[ /list]**General Comments:[ /b] For those who were not accepted, admissions are basically a crap shoot; the information I posted above can surely attest to that. Your work ethic and open mind will get you further than any degree, Ivy or otherwise, could.

To those who did get accepted, I look forward to romping with you in Philly!

Sorry for being blunt. Not in the mood to be all happy, but I am not so upset either. I was never sure whether Penn was my top school, and I told all my friends that I hope to be deffered and then accepted. Just annoying that I was the only one rejected from my school and that I now have to try for the remainder of the semester. Congratulations to all!

Decision: Accepted
School applied to: CAS

So soooo so excited to meet you all, fellow Quakers!

To all of those who received rejections from Penn: I am so sorry. I know you feel terrible and empty, but I just wanted to give you some good news – the pain wears off soon. I am a year ahead of you. This time next year you are going to be in an amazing college and loving life. I promise. Every person I know who didn’t get accepted into their first choice ends up loving the school they attend. So many of these people say things like, “I had no idea how much I’d love __________; I am so glad I came here.”

So please don’t use one decision as a basis to judge yourself. The admissions process is not perfect. Some luck is involved. But you will be alright soon. You’re a great person with a lot of talent, and today’s decision will only make you stronger! That much I can promise you.

Job/Work Experience: Worked as the coordinator at an at risk centre
Volunteer/Community service: A LOT
Summer Activities: law office internship, marching band camps, etc
Essays: I think this was my strongest portion of the application. Common app talked about being a witness to child slaves and learning to love others without patronizing them
Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t read them
Counselor Rec: Haven’t read them
Additional Rec:
Interview: Via SKYPE - it went well, it wasn’t some intellectually charged conversation or anything, but we did talk about international issues and such for about an hour.

Reflection
Strengths: Essays. The whole, “tell what you can bring to the Penn community, and not just what you want from it” is entirely true, IMO
Weaknesses: SAT scores (I had a couple more SAT IIs in the low 600s and my 2230 is superscored)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: All I know is that I worked hard, and I’m grateful that they saw that.

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):none

State (if domestic applicant):NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type:Medium Public, very competitive
Ethnicity:Chinese
Gender:Male
Income Bracket:Pretty high up there.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Recruited Athlete (although I’m not sure if it played a part in the decision for Vagelos)

Strengths:SAT, Weighted GPA, Fencing, Essays
Weaknesses:UW GPA, other ECs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong essay, fencing, SAT, grades

General Comments: I knew beforehand that I was accepted into CAS because of fencing, but the Vagelos part was a complete mystery until today. I doubt that athletics helped me very much for Vagelos since they are very selective.

[] Strengths: Extremely rigorous transcript (lots of outside classes), great test scores, M&T essay really linked my passion for politics to my skills and love for science and economics
[] Weaknesses: I had absolutely no major awards (disregarding National AP Scholar and NMSF); I had no extracurriculars at ALL in engineering or business
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted to Auburn a few weeks ago with a full ride (assuming I get NMF)

[/ul]General Comments:

Don’t be afraid to apply to Wharton, SEAS, or M&T just because you haven’t done extracurriculars in the pertinent fields. I was able to show competence in science and economics with a genuine desire to study business and engineering. I don’t doubt that my acceptance was because I identified how the things I chose to pursue in high school relate to what I want to do in college.

To all those deferred and rejected, hang in there. One of my best friends got deferred from Columbia yesterday and another got rejected, but both are taking it well and using it as an opportunity to identify weaknesses in their applications and fix said weaknesses. The decision of a college admissions committee has no bearing on your personal worth or intelligence. With that being said, I wish everyone the best on their college quests.
