[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: IM GOING TO UPENN!! YEAHHHHHHH!!!
[/ul]**General Comments:[ /b] CONGRATS to everybody who made it!! I can’t believe my luck

One of the most important things is to just be genuine and to be yourself. As cliche as it sounds, I feel like officers can definitely tell when people exaggerate or take on an identity that differs from what they believe in. Essays will sound more heartfelt and persuasive when you write about what you are truly passionate about! Also, don’t be afraid to take risks!

I cannot WAIT to meet my fellow Penn ED’ers at school next fall!! Have a great rest of your senior years, everyone! :)

Hey everyone, and congrats to all who were accepted ED!

I’m a Penn alum currently in medical school, and I must say that my time at Penn was utterly incredible and I can’t imagine having gone anywhere else. If any of you have questions for somebody with more of a long-range view of the Penn experience, I’d be happy to field them.

I hope you’re all excited to start your time at Penn, and I hope that going in you realize just what a marvelous and unique community of which you’re becoming a part.

Decision: Accepted

School applied to: SEAS
Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown):
710 Math, 760 Writing, 780 Reading
[] SAT II:
640 Physics, 730 Math II
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):
Our school doesn’t provide an unweighted GPA. My weighted GPA was 3.67.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
Our school doesn’t rank or provide percentile, but I wasn’t even in the top 20% (which was 16 people).
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):
AP Calculus AB: 4
BC and Physics this year.
[] Senior Year Course Load:
French Cinema, BC Calc, AP Physics, Technical Theater 3, Java and Python independent study with a faculty member, English 12, Senior Writing
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
National Merit Semifinalist, National Service Award, “Who Me, A School Librarian?” award from PSLA, Reta Emerson Fellowship
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Recording clerk for GSA, fitness, extensive technical theater work from master electrician to lighting designer (I wrote my Common App short-answer on this), Magic: The Gathering (yes, really)
[] Job/Work Experience:
Best Buy this year, Teaching assistant at a Hebrew school for the past 5 years, worked at Wharton for the past 3 years, worked with my school’s IT department last summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: Worked in a program to learn how to teach disabled children, worked with the Abington Art Center to develop a cell-phone scavenger hunt, library aide for 4 years with a statewide award last year. I started a student-run technology helpdesk at my school that I personally manage and lead.
[] Summer Activities: Worked at Wharton for the past 3 years
[] Essays: Not bad, wrote about what I learned from helping to teach children with mental/physical handicaps; my Penn essay was pretty dry but extremely well-researched
[] Teacher Recommendation: I think they were pretty good; I asked my math teacher from the past 4 years, who has also been my faculty advisor, and my physics teacher for the past 2 years
[] Counselor Rec: I don’t know, he was pretty sure that I had absolutely no chance of getting in.
[] Additional Rec: Dean and associate dean of Wharton.
[] Interview: Excellent: he said that he was extremely impressed.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): PA
[] School Type: Private Quaker school ranked top 10 in the Philadelphia area
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $75,000 to $100,000/yr
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My mother is a staff member

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: A lot of extracurriculars, SAT I scores were not too bad, my school is extremely competitive. Good recs.
[] Weaknesses: My GPA and SAT II scores, without a doubt.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have worked at Penn over the summer for the past 3 years, my mom’s been on staff for 10 years, and I had a really good set of recommendation letters from the associate dean and from the dean of Wharton. I had a fantastic alumni interview, and I kept constant contact with the officer from Admissions who was going to be reading my application. I attended admissions workshops at Penn where I got to meet this officer, as well as Eric Furda himself, in person.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Before this, I was accepted to Pitt and Temple.

[/ul]General Comments:
I used a certain automatic chancing community website, which told me that I had a 20% chance of getting in. The community of that site told me I had a 40% chance. A person from my school with better SAT II scores and a 4.3 GPA (and, therefore, cum laude) got deferred. I spent a lot of time reading the “chance me!” threads on this site, where I had to see people say things like “If you have under a 2300 and a 4.0 UW, you’re wasting the application fee.”

To be honest, I thought I had absolutely no shot at the Ivies. I’ve never really considered myself smart by any means; my grades were the result of “hard work”. But I guess I was wrong. Effort really does pay off in the end
For those of you reading this next year, remember that it never hurts to TRY.
Wayne Gretzky (I<3hockey :D): “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

cowboy, you have to realize that being smart IS working hard. I’ve come to learn that over time. Looks like you’re more than ready to excel at Penn; congrats!!!

(In the interest of full disclosure, I’m big into encouraging people to go into the life sciences, so glad to see somebody clearly as keen as you going into biochem at Penn.)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: weak SAT.

That’s a ridiculous acceptance rate, congratulations to everyone who got accepted

You cannot seriously believe that you got deferred because of your “weak” 2320 SAT.

@Ivystriver2

For my school it is. 6 people were accepted this year, all around 2380.
Or maybe I didn’t sell myself enough/lack of major awards.
