Official University of Pennsylvania ED 2007 Decisions

Nope...I re-read through it since I got my decisions. No typos.

I guess it goes to show that the stuff they say about how acceptances are unpredicatable is right. And, while I'm certainly not happy that I'm the one rejected...Penn can accept whoever they want, I suppose. After just a little more whining on my part, it'll be time to move on and figure out which other college I'd like to go to.

I guess I'll tell you why they say they rejected me if I or my gc gets a chance to talk to them.

finally posting stats...

Other Factors: I received two interviews, one on campus (for legacy) and one locally (with an alumni), that went very well.

MnM619 - Penn is not exactly Villanova but being Catholic by itself didn't hurt you - Penn has a big Newman Center (Catholic students organization), etc. Only 30% of legacies get in, people with 800 SATs get rejected, etc. They just have too many applicants and have to reject a lot of qualified people. It's not purely a matter of scores. For some reason you didn't hit it with them while others with lower scores did. I'm sure you'll be accepted by some other excellent school.

On the other hand, as a warning to others, religion and politics are the classic topics NOT to discuss during interviews. Bringing them up (regardless of what party or religion you are or the interviewer is and whether or not they are the same) is itself a mistake that may be noted.

ACCEPTED CAS!!!!

Percy Skivins:

i actually showed my interviewer a satirical cartoon i drew that made fun of bush/republicans, and i asked which party he voted for in the election. (forgot his answer) i think as long as you present your viewpoints with clarity and intelligence and show respect for different opinions, it won't hurt you. after all, most kids (even those who apply to penn) don't really care about politics and know little about recent affairs, it just shows you are more knowledgeable and concerned.

congrats amy!

I think I have a pretty decent shot in April. My principal saw that I got deferred and offered to write me a rec, and I said sure...Also, my GPA/rank will go up this semester along with my SAT scores hopefully. I took them in December and thought I did considerably better.

"On the other hand, as a warning to others, religion and politics are the classic topics NOT to discuss during interviews. Bringing them up (regardless of what party or religion you are or the interviewer is and whether or not they are the same) is itself a mistake that may be noted."

Meh, I figure if that hurt my application, it's a damn good thing they didn't accept me.

And on the Catholic note, 20% of the student body is Catholic, the supposed issue is with one particular admissions woman. She has flat refused to come to our school every year. I don't know that that was it, though. They could have had any reason, and I haven't even had the chance to ask them, yet.

It's great that you are proud of your beliefs, but remember getting into a college is a privilege that they are free to withhold, so it doesn't usually pay to make yourself into a big pain BEFORE they take you. Later is ok.

Maybe they did get the feeling that your value system would just not be a good match for Penn (and maybe they were right about this). They do stem cell research, abortions in their hospital, etc. Even if 20% of the students are Catholic, I doubt many are ultra conservative. The overall atmosphere of the campus is not something that would really go that well with being a very conservative Catholic - the over all feeling is "big city Eastern liberal" and you might not have fit in all that well. I'm sure you could have done it, academically for sure, but there might have been times when you were uncomfortable. The adcom that your school doesn't seem to click with is a hint - imagine getting to campus and there are another 500 people on the faculty and many of your fellow students who are just as hostile to your value system as that adcom. Why not go somewhere that feels more like "home" to you, a place where the value system is closer to your own but the education is just as good. Georgetown, maybe? Notre Dame? I think you'd be happier in the end. The admissions people are not dumb and I think they might have sensed this vibe in your application and were really doing you a favor. The best school is not the one with the highest USNEWS ranking but the one that is the best for YOU.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: Congratulations to everyone who made it, and to those deferred, don't give up hope.

Well, my gc talked to Penn. Apparently, they claim, my "why Penn" essay doesn't mention anything Penn specific. This is news to me. Apparently, The West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, The Penn Museum, the "Off the Beat" A Capella group, the "culture clash" freshman seminar, and the three Penn professors I mentioned (all of whom I had personally talked to) are not unique to Penn. It would be appreciated if they would tell me which other colleges have these so that I can apply there in the RD round.

It could have also been for Drexel or Temple??

mnm619

You really gotta "move on" - it's almost impossible that they are gonna reverse their decision, so there's no point in going over this endlessly - what part of "no" don't you understand. It doesn't make any difference at this point if they mis-read your essay or they didn't like which side you parted your hair on or whatever. If it's for the reason you suspected earlier (that they don't like kids from conservative Catholic schools who they think will demonstrate in front of their hospital waving around fetuses in glass jars) they sure as hell aren't gonna tell you the real truth anyway. They really don't have to have a real good reason - they have to say no to 70% of the ED applicants no matter what. You were clearly more qualified than the average reject, even more qualified than the average admit, but that doesn't change the answer - no is no. It's their loss - you'll be a great asset to some school. It just wasn't meant to be at Penn. Don't wallow in negativity. Use positive energy to write better essays for your other choices.

Without reading your why Penn essay, it sounds to me like it might have been spread too thin - it would have been better to mention one or two things you really liked than the at least 7 things you mentioned above - I'm guessing that the essay mentioned more that 7.

"off the beat" rocks my world... they are one of the many amazing a capella groups at penn

wow, percy skivins, a bit harsh, don't you think?

A little harsh, but necessary.

You would be doing the same thing to if you got rejected.

No need for the hashness/rudeness. And it is necessary to do stuff like this sometimes.
