Both my parents attended Penn and I also recieved a letter of recommendation from a board of overseer, so I was shocked when I got rejected and others with similar stats got accepted. I really wanted to go to Penn, but congrats to all who are going.

To all those rejected/deferred:

Don’t feel bad - your qualifications were stellar - I’ll still in awe at some of them. You are all sure to get in somewhere great (maybe even Penn for the deferred). Between the fact that they have just too many applications and have to reject 7 out of 10 in the ED round (even more in the case of Wharton) and the (self-imposed) pressures they are under to put together a class that fits diversity targets, fills the athletic teams, meets the needs of the development office, etc. it’s a wonder that anyone at all who is “unhooked” gets in at all. It’s clear to me that many if not most of those who were rejected were every bit as good as (if not better than) those who were accepted, so don’t blame yourself in any way - it’s just a crap shoot at this point and the dice rolled the wrong way for you.

“But now that I got deferred, I really am wondering whether they are telling me “We want to know more” or “This is a nice way to say you are rejected”.”

I’m not really sure it’s saying either. As for knowing more, assuming your application is complete, they really have all they information about you they want - they really aren’t looking for one extra recommendation or a DVD of you singing Spanish folk songs. It doesn’t hurt to send a letter to your adcom saying that you are still very interested in attending Penn, it remains by far your first choice, blah, blah blah but don’t expect it to have much of an effect. As for it being a consolation prize, that’s more what the waiting list is about because so few people ever get off of it. Deferred really means deferred- they will look at your app again in the spring and your chances are about as good in that round as any other RD candidate (which is, admittedly, not that good based on the percentages, esp. in the case of Wharton). So while your chances in RD are never good, don’t assume they are zero either.

To all you Wharton people out there- first off conragulations to all who were accepted, and hopefully all deferred will get in as well, but second is it possible for a 31 ACT 3.9 GPA and good recs, EC’s and all of that to get into Wharton?? I just started looking into it a few days ago, but I dont know much about it. Any answers or input would be very useful, thanks.

Yes, I must agree with Percy Skivins. I have noticed many applicants on this thread with superlative credentials that were unfortunately rejected. I wish you all the best of luck on all your regular decision applications! As for my fellow acceptees, I look forward to spending the next 4 years with all of you!

absolutely Islanders, I’ve heard of people with much less getting into Wharton, it’s all about how you portray yourself to the Adcoms, if you show you are passionate about education, have an interest in business other than typical cliche stuff. From what i’ve seen in Wharton, SATS and ACTS are really atypical. Sure there are whartonites with 2400s and 36s but there are also the students with the lower scores who are doing just as well. It’s really about proving that you do belong at Wharton, but then again i’m not saying a person with a sub 30 act and 1300 SAT has an equal chance as a person with a higher score but anything is possible, best of luck.

Thanks RV that was very helpful… I really hope I get into there. That would be great. So how exactly do I prtray that I want to do business without being cliche about it?? lol… That seems quite difficult. Thanks again to all

General Comments/Congratulations/etc:
Congratulations everyone! I’m excited to meet you all in Philly! Those who got deferred keep your hopes up.

Anybody know whether I will be reconsidered for M&T at regular time after being accepted SEAS now?

congrats, but once you’re in, no more consideration.

you can apply to m+t once you’re here, but the gpa requirement is 3.9+ (quite difficult).

all you kids with model un interests should join the iaa!

and current iaa CD’s who have enough time to be posting on CC during finals can start working on their ilmunc crisis :stuck_out_tongue: :-P

Getting into M&T once you’re here is pretty tricky – you need a 3.9 minimum (pretty much all A’s, maybe room for one or two A-'s) and a few recommendations and essential class requirements. I think there was only one person that did that last year.

Perhaps I was rejected because I can’t properly post. Stats are below.

yo guys, i know someone who got into Wharton from my school that doesnt have phenomenal stats. He has 1950 on SAT. His rank is 10. Not that great of a gpa. Essays were ok. Extracurriculars weren’t special. Idk how he got in. Maybe its cuz my school is one of the top schools in Philadelphia and that only 2 ppl applied and he was the better one. The other one was deferred.

if your a resident of philadelphia proper (not the suburbs), you get a huge boost, people in the bottom half of my class got in to Penn my year, and the few who applied to wharton all got in. The boost is particularly big for the public schools, but similar a similar trend occurs in the private schools; residency is the most important thing.
