I swear I am not a freak… i just really want to go to Penn.

understandable.

Wharton = hard to get in
seriously, some of these people are redonkulously amazing, and I’m wondering how they didn’t get in

“Merrill Lynch Internship, Hedgefund Internship, Law firm Internship, Navigant Capital A Internship”

Please, don’t call those “internships.” Until you’re actually doing real stuff – and they’re not letting high schoolers build DCF or correlation models – those are summer jobs.

I decided this would be helpful for RD applicants looking at this page. I averaged the accepted SAT/ACT scores. The SAT scores are rounded to the nearest ten, ACT to the nearest whole.

quag-mire did you not have any extra cirriculars or just didnt list them?

giggety giggety… alll right…

“I decided this would be helpful for RD applicants looking at this page. I averaged the accepted SAT/ACT scores.”

Averages are not really useful in cases where the distribution is binomial (has two peaks). For example, you may read that the average life expectancy in some third world country is say 35 years. Really people are not dying at 35 - what happens is that half the children born die in early childhood and then the other half live to a relatively long age, but when you average together 0 and 70 you get 35. Or it is like saying that the average apple/orange is salmon colored - true but meaningless.

The same thing is going on with SATs - averaging together the “hooked” and “unhooked” applicants gets you a meaningless average - lots of “hooked” applicants are getting in with 650s or below. Lots of “unhooked” applicants are being rejected with 800s. If you are “hooked” (athlete, URM, etc.) then you should not be discouraged if you have SATs significantly (as in 100 points or more) below the 730/740 range. If you are “unhooked”, then you should get little comfort from the fact that you have SATs somewhere near the average or even if you have one or more 800s - basically this means that you are not DISQUALIFIED but it doesn’t mean you have a particularly good chance of getting in.

For RD applicants, I’d say that if you have SATs anywhere in the 600s or above range and otherwise have a decent package of GPA, activities, etc., it is worth taking a shot on a Penn application (with the understanding that your chances are never really good regardless of what your SATs are) - they seem to let people (even unhooked applicants) in for strange and mysterious reasons having nothing to do with SATs. They understand that anyone with above say 1800/2400 may be capable of attending Penn (if not pursuing every single major) and so they base their decision on other factors. So if you have a 2400, don’t be disappointed if you get rejected anyway and if you have 1800, who knows, maybe you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. It’s like the PA Lottery ad - “you gotta play to win”. Don’t count on it though.

would anyone consider being an IB diploma student a hook?
