[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: None

[/list]
General Comments: It does sort of suck. I am still honored to be deferred. Its just that mind was already setting in with senioritis, and now I need to bump up all my grades. For those rejected: what can I say, you gave it your all, and it really is just annoying how Penn can’t accept everyone. For those deferred: The wait will be painful and applications will be nuisances, but what can we do? For those accepted: Congratulations, you really have shined in the admissions process and I hope you the world of success at Penn

Rejected. I’ll reapply next year.

So I was really upset at being rejected, but then I checked out all yall, and realized that I’m in really good company. Not posting stats, but I’m another white girl with a 4.0 and a 35.

Does it seem like PA applicants were hit especially hard?

Decision: Accepted (Wharton!)

Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown): 2310, one time
•ACT: Did not take
•SAT II: Math II- 800, World History- 800, Biology (M)- 760, Chemistry-720
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/625
•AP (place score in parenthesis): 5- Calculus BC, Biology, World History, Physics B
4- Chemistry, Gov, Lang
3- French
•IB (place score in parenthesis):
•Senior Year Course Load: APUSH, AP Lit, AP Stat, AP Physics C, and half day internship
at NIH
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar stuff, one school award for math and music, music rewards (All State, etc), Girl Scout Silver Award
Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): A LOT of music related ones. Pres. of honor society, Girl Scouts, Science Internship, etc
•Job/Work Experience: Um I guess internship
•Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at NOW, enviromental stuff for Girl Scouts
•Summer Activities: NOW Volunteer and science internship at NIH
•Essays: Short EC- talked about NOW and how it made me very socially aware (if that’s the correct way to describe it haha). Commonapp- It was about music and I thought it was kinda good. Penn- talked about campus and very optimistic tone, I guess. Other than that, it was kinda average and I felt like I rambled on about nonsense in my second paragraph about how I could contribute to the community. Optional- bit tongue-in-cheek about how I love nature and why. Tied that with my background.
•Teacher Recommendation: Good. One was from a teacher who I joked around with and whose class I loved and did very well in. Another was from my Differential equations teacher who liked that I paid attention and asked questions?
•Counselor Rec: Known her for all four years, and she’s the nicest guidance counselor in our school. Told me later that she wished she could have adopted me
•Additional Rec: Asked flute teacher. Stereotypically good.
•Interview: None! I was so worried about that lol!
Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Near Pennsylvania
•Country (if international applicant):
•School Type: Good school within a bad county. In a slightly competitive magnet program within the school
•Ethnicity: asian
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: $100,000-$120,000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Took advanced math courses in 10th and 11th grade? Volunteer at someplace not typical? Research at a well-establised science institution? Also a first generation immigrant, but does that count even count much?
Reflection
•Strengths: Stats, Courses, GPA, rank, ECs, Recs
•Weaknesses: Mostly Penn essay
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
General Comments:

[Can’t believe it! I spent like an hour beforehand to just prep myself for the worst…and I cried when I saw the H in “Hurrah…!” pop up! Sometimes I hovered between doubt and confidence when I thought about whether I would get in :D. Right now, I’m not in the right position to say that the college decision process will get better for those who weren’t accepted, but good luck!!! Talk to some friends or Netflix the entire night away to make things a bit happier :)

@YellowDaises - not necessarily. This is an extremely small sample size and does not really show the true nature of the decisions

Tally
11/29 accepted - 6 deferrals - 38% acceptance

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): DECA National Competition Champion x2, AP Scholar w/Distinction…and I did NOT get National Merit at all (PSAT was 196).

[] Volunteer/Community service: Former volunteer at Children’s Museum (pre-employment); 7 year volunteer at local Library.
[] Summer Activities: DNA Research Intern summer before Junior Year at the Field Museum of Natural History
[] Essays: Pretty good. Started in the summer, had my AP English teachers (old and new) give it a look.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Great! One of my teachers writes in her recs that she choose a top student she taught every year (thus creating a collection of said top students). She mentioned how I was it for her. Other teacher wrote TWO pages of goodness…but spelled my name wrong. Hehe. Hey, I’m in, so no worries!
[] Counselor Rec: As good as it can be. I was switched to a new counselor this fall, so…
[] Additional Rec: From my boss at the Internship. It was solid, and focused on my link to the goals of Vagelos LSM.
[li] Interview: Nope. Which made me nervous.[/li][/ul]

Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): IL
[] School Type: Public

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.[/ul]
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test Scores, Awards, Leadership (over 10 positions), Transcript (to an extent), Essays and Recs.
[] Weaknesses: Transcript----was not in Multi-Var Calc or AP Spanish, so could’ve been stronger. Also, B in Honors Physics and many A-'s.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays and recs were a HUGE +, as was Extra Curriculars. My quarter grades were all A/A-s, which helped (as I’m in 5 AP)
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere. Just withdrew all my apps!
[/ul]

General Comments:
I’m incredibly excited for the next few years!! Penn 2016!! And your SAT Score can improve—I went from 2130 to 2230 to 2330…took it thrice, sent all my scores, but hey, it worked! I also sent my ACT–got a 34 three times, and once an 8 essay. But I sent it anyways—follow the rules and karma is on your side!

[] Summer Activities: I didn’t put a section on my extra resume for this!
[] Essays: Short answer was about band. I don’t know how it flew with them, considering that it was so horrible and DID NOT EVEN RELATE TO ENGINEERING.
Long answer. An interesting incident in the lab and how I’ve learned to be persistent. Again, this wasn’t an outstanding essay.
Optional essay. About my 9.5 toes and how I’m always aware of my imperfections but move on. Wasn’t that great either.
Supplement: It used a pun on Penngineering and cooking. However, I mentioned engineering for only about 250 words and didn’t go into why I wanted to go into BME, etc. I guess your essays are fine even if you aren’t specific with the school (SEAS) you’ve chosen.

[] Teacher Recommendation: CalcAB/BC teacher: was very nice, previously used for a scholarship
Research teacher: Didn’t see it!
[] Counselor Rec: Sadly, didn’t see it 
[] Additional Rec: From my mentor at UCLA. Didn’t see it, but I thank him so much for it. Try to get one of these all you 17ers, especially if you’ve done research!

[] Ethnicity: Vietnamese
[] Gender: M
[]Income Bracket: 150k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] No hooks whatsoever (ORM), but parents immigrants?
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT2s, especially for engineering! 
[] Weaknesses: ORM, essays were terrible IMO.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not sure. Penn does take into account the school where you go to, so there are different standards! So never feel depressed even if you don’t have 10+ AP classes!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Only to Penn, and forever <3 [/ul]
General Comments:
As 45 Percenter has said, it matters little where you go to undergraduate school. For those that were deferred or rejected, I understand what you are going through. The stress of parents can be quite gruesome, and I know how so many people, even your friends, that held high expectations for you can suddenly turn the other cheek. But please, do cry tonight. Hit your pillow. Talk to your friends. Call a hotline if you need. Then cry so more. And more. Do whatever it takes. It’ll take a while. But just remember, there’s so much out there. Promise me you’ll kick butt during RD, alright?
As for those applicants next year, please don’t be discouraged if you don’t have state awards or 2400 SATs or a 790 in Math2. Scores aren’t everything. Remember, do the best in the context of your school and the closely matched ones. : Take care, everyone, and always keep faith.
