*Not sure what happened…his essays either were terrible or the teachers that wrote recommendations for him must not have given him glowing reviews when they claimed they would?? He claimed that his interviews went well, but he is a very reserved child and may not have come across as an outgoing student that would “add to the university”… Even though he had a perfect 36 in Math on his ACT, we were surprised at how an 800 on SAT and Subject Tests was the standard score for most U. Chicago and MIT applicants. We also realized that we should have started a non-profit at some time to benefit under-privileged children (that was noted in many “accepted” students stats). Waitlisted at Univ. of Rochester left him speechless! Kudos to those who were accepted!

It is possible that his interview did not come off showing him as a confident and eager young student seeking to pursue UR. It may also be possible that his essays did not fully portray who he is. Another possible reason is that UR is seeking a diverse crowd, and you son was competing against many other people just like him in academic rigor, personality, etc.

Collegetimesfour -it’s always tough to say in these situations. Since URoc seems to “fit in” with the other rejections and waitlists, I’d lean (like you) toward something in the interview or essays. It’s tough though - and I can understand your (and his) frustrations.

If he’s looking neuro or biomedical, Pitt is still a VERY good choice - and free tuition is a nice bonus.

We can also keep fingers crossed for those waitlists if they’re his preference.

^^^^I agree. With those stats and ECs there has to be something that really stood out as a negative…in an essay, or a rec, or something. Might be worth trying to figure out what it was even if won’t make a material difference now (but as knowledge for the future). The rejections and the waitlist at Vandy certainly could happen to ANYONE, but from there I think your situation is screaming some kind of misstep. Fortunately your son still has some good choices.

Thank you for everyone’s comments. CC has proven to be very supportive throughout the entire application process (and beyond!) I was told that my S has Asperger’s a couple of years ago, but I never wanted him to feel differently than his siblings, so we chose to just treat him as the “unique individual that he is” at home and never medicate him. The idea was that he is a very intelligent child and we didn’t want to stifle his intelligence by giving him medication to “dull” his strong academic abilities. I have always been a very outgoing person, so I know that he can come across as socially awkward to people who aren’t familiar with him. What I am guessing happened was that he probably came across as a person who lacks a little apathy and is a little self-absorbed (a fairly common trait with Asperger’s) in his essays. Without him using that to his advantage in his essays (he probably could have written about his struggles with his social skills), he may have been viewed in a negative light by the readers. I trust the teachers that gave him recommendations…they were all incredibly positive influences in his life. I have 3 more children going to college in the next 2 years (multiples), and I will just be more vigilant when asking for honest advice on their personal essays. I think our friends who reviewed the essays read them with great intentions of helping my son, but didn’t consider how someone that didn’t know him might not understand him based on his ?disconnected? responses. Thank you again for the suggestions…there was a huge learning curve trying to get the first one into colleges!

Creekland…thank you for the vote of confidence towards Pitt…yes, he is planning on studying Neurology and Chemistry in college. (He wants to go for his M.D./Ph.D.) He’s just a great kid…I am very proud of him!! Best of luck to everyone in their academic studies! Congrats to all!

S is still waiting to hear from U of R - they misplaced some of the things his guidance counselor sent so his application was not read until last week.

Collegetimesfour, good luck to your son! Hope he gets off the waitlist if U of R is where he really wants to go - that full tuition sounds good to me though.

S is waiting on U of R to make the final decision - also accepted at Emory, College of Wooster and SUNY Geneseo - no’s from Duke, Brown, Dartmouth and Princeton.

We have a friend whose son is at Pitt, and like your son would be from the sounds of it, is in the honors college. He loves it from what we have heard. Plus your son may be able to take classes at CMU. He sounds like someone who will succeed anywhere. Best of luck to him.

The entering Class of 2017 will once again be Rochester’s largest-, best-qualified, and most interesting ever. We have received about 8% more deposits than we wanted or anticipated, and now we expect a final enrolled Class exceeding the 1,200 student goal by a lot, likely much closer to 1,300. We will be able to house all of the freshmen, but we’re expecting to help most of the new transfer students find their accommodations nearby off-campus instead.

Deposits have arrived from 48 states, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Marianas, as well as 71 other countries.

For the first time in Rochester’s history, the most common academic interest among incoming students is one of our many engineering options rather than a biological sciences option. Interest in mathematics, film and digital media studies, music, international relations and our several public health options has also grown compared to a year ago.

The deposits suggest a Class that will once again be 50/50 male/female. 68% will be from outside New York State. 49% will be White, Non-Hispanic, 7% Hispanic, 5% African-American, 9% Asian-American and close to 20% visa-holding international students.

As of today the average GPA of incoming students (unweighted) is >3.8 and the average SAT has increased more than 20 points. About 40 students are enrolling via the new “test-flexible” option, presenting (outstanding) results from A-level, AP, or IB exams instead.

Welcome to everyone! Welcome to the family! We’re having a prolonged, warm, beautiful spring in Rochester, but amid the barbecues and golf days I’m already more excited about your arrival in August.

Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid
