General Comments:
I’m really happy to have been accepted to UVA’s engineering school! I also got into VT engineering and I really love both schools  I’m going to have a tough time deciding where to matriculate this fall. As seen, my SAT scores weren’t the best - they didn’t hurt my application, but they definitely didn’t help it much. Juniors and sophomores, I wish you the best of luck! Above all else, start your applications EARLY. Working on your applications up until the last minute is quite stressful :)

[ /list][ b]Reflection
[ *] Strengths: ACT, GPA, Recommendations
[ *] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars, lack of hooks, OOS
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think a combination of great numbers and recommendations got me in. I initially thought that my essays were horrible, but reading them over again, I no longer think that. Don’t take my opinion as a sign that essays don’t matter, as they do. I’m just overly critical of my own writing.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Denied: Northwestern, U Chicago
[ /list][ b]General Comments: This was really shocking, really good news. Within the last week, I was rejected from two awesome schools, and I was starting to think that I wouldn’t get in anywhere else. I felt pretty dejected. Assuming that the financial aid details work out, I’ll probably end up at UVa, which is certainly a prospect I am happy about. I am also terrible at formatting this.**

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was honestly extremely sure I would get rejected, I didn’t think my essays were up to par. When I read “Congratulations!” on SIS I literally flipped out. I have no idea what made me seem UVA-material to the admissions officers and I really want to know haha
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - Tech, some others
**General Comments: Okay so if you are in-state and you so much as SLIGHTLY think you have a SLIVER of a chance of getting into UVA and you want to go there, then apply. I seriously had no confidence in myself over the past few months and was completely sure I had filled out an application with zero chance of being accepted. I was soooooooo wrong. Please please please try to apply because anything can happen! I am so happy! **

General Comments:
I’m still waiting for 14 more schools… crazy, isn’t it. After getting rejected from two schools, I’m happy I’ve got a new acceptance. I’m not sure how the financial aid will work out, but hopefully attending UVA could be an option. I was disappointed that my counselor didn’t nominate me for Jefferson Scholars… our school could only nominate one person and she nominated someone else. I’m wondering if that person got in…

Worked as a lifeguard full-time this summer and last
Attended Rotary Youth Leadership Conference summer after sophomore year and then returned summer after junior year (summer I was a rising senior) to help organize and be a group leader
Attended Adventures in Biotechnology my summer
[] Essays:
I worked hard on them and had both parents look them over - I wrote about seeing Bubble rock on a camping trip in Maine and how that intrigued me and got me interested in the natural world and science and then I wrote about the honor code and told a story about a friend’s party getting out of hand and what I did to make things right.
My Common app essay I also put a lot of time into, I wrote about making a decision to speak against a proposed bill in my town at a town meeting that most people expected me to support and why I did it, and what I learned from it. I had my GC, a college counselor, and my parents all look it over
[] Teacher Recommendation: Latin teacher of 3 years - she knew I loved Latin and was a very dedicated student although I could not fit it into my senior schedule, but I didn’t know her well personally. The other was my honors chemistry teacher from junior year - she knew me well and I worked and went in for help to get good grades in the class. Also I cried in front of her once and she helped me bounce back from a bad concussion last Spring so I think that helped because she could explain what happened in more detail
[] Counselor Rec: pretty generic, didn’t read
[] Additional Rec: My futsal coach/boss of 8 years I’d assume it was pretty good, although 1 I never read it and 2 I’m only like 60% sure that UVA actually got it since he mailed the letters in himself and I never got any confirmation and he’s a veryyy disorganized person

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at University of Notre Dame EA, UMass Amherst Commonwealth Honors College with full ride, Waitlisted at Northwestern and WashU (didn’t interview at either so I wasn’t too hopeful)
Reflection
[]Strengths: Definitely my essays, they’re probably the reason I got in. The 720 in Literature also helped (I’m applying for Comparative LIterature)
[]Weaknesses: My SAT scores, I understand they’re pretty low for University of Virginia. Oh and my ECs are pretty miserable
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because of the essays.
[]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to UC Davis
General Comments: I’m thrilled and honored to have been accepted by such as great school, but I’ve already decided that I’m going to go to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. [] Strengths: upward trend (2 bs in freshman, 1 sophomore, 1 junior, straight As on mid year), believed I showed a low of learning and challenge, great ECs an leadership, recs
[] Weaknesses: test scores, not the highest rank, made an mistake in an essay and had to send a new one in

Show on your app that you aren’t just academically focused. They want to see people who will contribute to the class. Also, people kept telling me I had to do certain things to get into such a good school and it was stupid. Do what you want to do!! Goodluck and congrats to my fellow Cavaliers!!!
