The W&L mother knows little about the place other than the small slice she sees. It’s in a small, isloated town. Does reasonably well on getting kids from all over the country and world from different backgrounds considering that. While it is not for everyone, for those who want a traditional, historic experience with easy acces to full professors, it is a great fit. For those wanting to be around kids with tatoos, body piercings, and socialist or anarchist tendencies it is not a good fit. “Mom’s” comments are way off he mark.

@purplelaughter, yeah, sometimes admissions can be a crapshoot. I was on an historical neighborhood tour here in NYC last week, and I was talking to a man about colleges. He mentioned that UVa was his son’s first choice when he was applying to colleges but didn’t get in. So, I asked him where did his son end up going. He said, “Yale.”

Too bad selectivity went down this year…32% rate? What are we becoming…a large-state school? Argh

The number of applications went up, while more in-state students were accepted as part of a long-term phased-in growth of undergrad in-state enrollments. I haven’t seen the data for this year, but my guess is that the out of state acceptance rate went down. The in-state rate is typically in the low 40s while the out of state rate is typically in the low 20s, which averages out to be in the 30s.

Honestly… I don’t know how I got in. There are so many people who are much more qualified than me but got waitlisted/rejected… My SAT scores fall much below average, my GPA is the only thing going for me, but even then… it’s not outstanding. I’m not even out-of-state, I live in Fairfax County- which should put me at a disadvantage. I even applied on Dec 31… the day before the deadline. And they only accept <100 Undergrads in their BS Architecture (they told me 60-70 when they visited my school). Unless <100 kids applied as an Arch major… I’m still at a loss for words.

Writing:
Common App Main: Very Strong (10)-Discussed my passion for ethnic foods and how that passion relates to my interpretation on diversity. Also mentioned my strong Italian-Heritage roots.
EC Short Essay: Decent (7)-Mentioned my seven year involvement with the Boy Scouts as well as my Eagle Scout project.
UVA Supplement: Very Strong (9-10) Two of the best college supplement essays I wrote. One was about my AP Lang summer asignment which I viewed as an intellectual challenge and the other was about how I “get lost” when reading my book about the universe. Both essays used vivid imagery and plenty of figurative language.
Teacher Recommendations: Both Strong (8) from AP Lang and AP US History Teachers - Mentioned my strong work ethic as well as how they always base their grades off of how well my work was.
Counselor Rec: Very Strong (9) - Mentioned my strengths as a leader and about how I pioneered the use of online classes at my High School, as I was the first to successfully complete an AP course online.
Additional Rec: Decent (7) - Scoutmaster discussed my leadership with my Boy Scout Troop.
