Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

@basketballer123 np! good luck!

@pandahk I I agree with what @ucboundvet said, but if you are still sending your transcript they must be official ones.

Send them to:

Hi people, what should I do if I dropped a current class that I stated in my common application as taking it this semester? Do you think this would affect their decision? Should I email them?

I have enough credits without this class to transfer and I believe it is not a req. for my major (CS). (The class is Quantum Mechanics).

Please help, any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

@Tiquicia: Email your admissions counselor about about any changes to your application.

@iloveasianguys,

I don’t think it’ll look bad if you can explain your reasons behind the change, which is what your counselor wants you to do with the statement. Also, if you explain or state what you’re working on towards the new major (i.e. taking statistics or econ) and show that you have a plan it should work in your favor.

I don’t know if that’s of help or makes sense…

@iloveasianguys

The more GE’s and foreign language you complete, the less you have to take at USC, so getting as much done as you can beforehand will benefit you in the long run.

My stats when transferring into USC include:

GPA: 4.0 (Dean’s List all four semesters of CC)
Transferable Units: 56
Extracurriculars: Youth Leader at my Catholic church (200+ hours); Southeast District Vice President of NV/CA Region AND Chapter Vice President of Service in Phi Theta Kappa; Club Film Director at CC, a few side projects in film.
Professor/Adviser Recommendations: Strong
Essays: Said great by others, read On Writing the College Application Essay by Harry Bauld to help me out.

Accepted: CSUF, CSULB, UCSB, Chapman University, USC
Rejected: UCLA (because I deliberately chose not to complete the film supplement :P)

@RandomNewGuy: I think Annenberg is uptight about transfers in completing foreign language because it sort of ties in to the field of communication, probably.

Gosh, I feel silly in comparison. We seem to have the same perspective on schools (excepted I am applying to Pitzer and ULV as well), but your application destroys mine.

My friend and I both applied for USC. While talking today he mentioned that it was odd he had not received even a welcome email. I told him that seemed really odd and he should check his junk email to make sure he didnt over look it. He still didnt see anything so he logged into the Common App and realized that he did not submit the signature page of the application and it still said in Progress. It shows that he completed the supplemental and paid the application fee before the deadline, does he still have chance to submit the app?

@RandomNewGuy: Were you applying for a film major or something else? I got into the Long Beach and Chapman film schools, but not USC.

Don’t let my own application discourage you. You got this!

@UCBoundVet: I don’t know. That’s something he’d have to call the school for since it’s an extenuating circumstance.

I’d love to pursue film, but I am opting for Comm./Journalism (exception being Media Studies at Pitzer). I feel I’d have better post-college success in that field, even if it’s not directly journalism (but rather something like community relations or errand boy for one of the media companies that populates SoCal).

Like I said before, I wish I could be so optimistic. Plenty of 3.7+ GPAs and PTK members and folks with outstanding credentials. It’s a tight race. I am hoping when I fly out to SoCal in June to find a place, it’ll be with the benefit of being a Trojan.

Don’t forget that you can always major in Communications and then take Cinematic Arts as your minor. That’s exactly what I’m doing right now. And you’re right, you’re more likely to be employed after graduation with a Communications degree. A degree in film doesn’t guarantee you a job in the film industry; the same could be said for any major, but it’s especially true for film.

Also, just don’t worry about it. [INCOMING CHEESE FACTOR] You have to truly believe in your heart that you got it in the bag. That will attract to you a nice fat acceptance packet on June 1st.

Hello everyone this is my first post and I’m very excited to be part of this forum.

Quick question. Do you guys think i have a shot at USC with a 3.72 GPA my first semester (I’m currently a Freshman), at a four year college. I think i have a great personal essay; i joined “Media Guild (filming program),” “United We Serve (community program)” and two other clubs whose names i don’t recall at this moment. I’m trying to get into School of Cinematic Arts. I completed my supplements with no letters of recommendation, so i think that’s going to hurt my chances and what really sucks is that i don’t have the English requirements they ask for, because I’m trying to finish my remedial Asian American 113B class. Hopefully I get in, because I want to have a successful filming career; I want to be the best filmmaker in the world (I actually wrote that in my essay).
I also made a video for the supplement it’s not great because i was completely lost I didn’t know what to make my film on and i was running out of time, i think this is one of the worst films I’ve ever created, but hopefully they like it.

[“Planey” USC Visual Sample - YouTube](<a href=“"Planey" USC Visual Sample - YouTube”>"Planey" USC Visual Sample - YouTube)

the link is above if you guys want to watch it. Be sincere and please tell me what my video needs or if it’s good at all. That will really help me later on in life.I think I could have done better, but to be honest I also procrastinated and I’m trying to brake that barrier (it’s not looking good). I’m aiming at a 4.0 this semester and i know i can do it, i just have to stop procrastinating. If you guys have any tips that could help me with my procrastination please tell me.

Please tell me, in your opinion whether i have a solid chance of getting in; an honest answer is way better than an untruthful answer.

@crownofthesea yes that makes sense. I have the worst reason for changing my major. To put it short, I got really frustrated with chemistry lab and realized if I have to continue with this, I might explode. My goal was to be a pharmacist but that was my parents’ wishes. And I think I will do that. Thanks.

@silverrex you need to tell me how you study. And time management because that is amazing! I completed all of USC’s GE’s and have not started foreign language but there are no classes that fit my schedule and are already filled up. And in your post to randomnewguy, because I am considering pr as my second major, Annenberg really needs the foreign language req filled?

Yeah, when I visited USC last summer, one of the advisors I met with implored me to double-down and complete the foreign language requirements because Annenberg really likes it done and in the bag when accepting transfers. I was unsure why, but I noted that tidbit and I am now on my third (and final!) semester of Spanish.

I’m sure if you have not completed the reqs that it doesn’t equate to rejection, and if you have a stellar application and stats, it may not matter anyway.

@RandomNewGuy: If for whatever reason you’re missing a prerequisite, you’ll just be accepted into Dornsife, where you can then take a semester and apply for Annenberg within the school, which is really easy.

@iloveasianguys: Well, I can tell you that it’s not all candy and roses. You have to stay motivated and put your very best effort into everything you do, which is easier said than done. It pays off in the end, though.

@CSUNMATADOR: I believe you could have done better on your visual sample as well. It’s not that the story itself is bad (its quite good), but it did feel rushed because some of your shots weren’t as well-composed as they could be. You have potential, though.

To give you perspective, this is my visual supplement to the film production major (I was rejected, but got accepted into Chapman’s and CSU Long Beach’s film programs:

While your credentials are great, I’m very concerned that you didn’t send in any letters of recommendation, considering they’re mandatory for any major within the SCA. Otherwise, it’s an incomplete application file and they have no choice but to turn it down.

Anyone what to chance me?
I currently go to CC in Orange County, and applied for Marshall School of Business.
I have a 3.9 GPA, all my major pre reqs and writing completed, along with USC’s GE, except the foreign language and diversity (not sure if business majors need a foreign language) classes.
Over 200+ hours of community service with a basketball league in my community, member of school’s accounting and business club, employed at Tilly’s clothing store for the past two years and also coach my former HS’s JV basketball team.
So I pretty much have no life LOL and my essay’s were somewhat strong (from what teachers and peers have told me).
Chances of being admitted?

@alaintran9: To me, you have a solid shot at USC, and I’m sure they would love the athletics-related extracurricular activities.

If your essays are as strong as your teachers and peers have said, that will help you stand out even more.

Also, any life you may have lost at CC, you’ll gain it all back at USC. Trust me!

Guys I was just wondering how important the High School Transcript was for USC Juniour Transfers ? Because I was told i did not need it but apparently I do so I sent it in late. Do you think i would get penalized for that?

@Transfer20I3: As long as you have over 30 units completed, USC places next to zero weight on your high school transcript and test scores.

No, you wouldn’t get a penalty.

Ya, that’s what i heard. Well also its because i have a CHSPE which is similar to the GED, that i sent in WAY before the Feb 1st deadline only the HS Transcript was late like Feb 5th ish.
While at it I’m getting nervous because of all of you amazing applicants … chance me ?

I’m only asking because all of you other applicants seem to blow me out of the pool …

Hello,

I transferred to USC (VITERBI) for chemical engineering last year and found this thread helpful and nervewrecking at the same time. So I’ve been through what you guys are probably going through.

If anyone would like to ask me questions regarding USC and transfer statistics, feel free to message me :)
