Official USC 2013 Transfer Thread

What is an SGR?

spring grade request

Oh gotcha. I’m not sure that everyone gets that? At least I hope not… if we didn’t find out till even later than the end of May (which is already ridiculous) that would be terrible.

nope, SGRs tend to only happen to people with low unit counts at time of transfer and/or key pre-req courses in progress during spring semester. at least that’s how it worked last year as far as I could tell.

yea haha not everyone gets the sgr

Hi guys!

I’m currently a transfer student at USC! I transferred here last semester (Fall 2012) So I was all in your guys’ shoes once! I know this thread kept me sane during the whole application process and waiting for decisions, so I’ll try to help if i can!

Here’s a little bit about myself.

Major: Human Biology (formerly known as kinesiology)
GPA at time of transfer: 3.1ish. (i’m letting you guys know this so you don’t worry TOO much about GPA) high school GPA was around 3.4 unweighted, 4.0 weighted.
Superscore for SAT: 2090
took two SAT 2s: 710,740. Math and korean respectively

of units at time of transfer: 31 by the time spring semester was done (I had received an SGR)

Extras: I had a lot of extracurriculars and i kept in constant contact with my admissions counselor, who has a small say in your decision. I recommend doing so as well. One thing i would like to note, in my personal opinion (not trying to boast or anything) my essay was pretty good. I personally believe that that’s what may have put me over the top.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
and remember, FIGHT ON!

Hey mark! congrats on making it in and nice to have you here  I have a few questions if you don’t mind.

by keeping in contact with your counselor, do you mean just asking questions and such? my admissions counselor didn’t reply to 2 of my emails and when she did later reply, she said a lot of her emails gets buried because of how busy everything is :\ so I didn’t want to annoy her with even more emails haha. but I don’t currently have any questions for her so. (unless you count will I be accepted lol)

also, about what time did you get your SGR and your acceptance?

and lastly, would you mind sharing what your financial aid was like? was USC generous with your’s?

So pretty much for basic questions i just asked my counselor. I know its faster to ask by calling the office or whatnot, but it just seemed like a better way to have my name be known by at least one person on the panel. The counselors probably are really busy at this point, but mine was nice enough to keep in contact with me and respond promptly… I hope that yours do the same!

If i remember, i got my sgr early may or really late april. Unfortunately it took my school like two weeks to prepare the official transcript, so i asked my counselor if they would take an unofficial one for the time being and use the official one later, and they said yes. I got an answer within a week!

As for financial aid, i couldn’t apply because i was dumb and didn’t think i was gonna get in… but as far as i’ve heard, USC is really generous with financial aid. If they want you, they’ll try to accompany your financial needs.

well I think most people will get decisions by May … =[ I’m pretty sure Marshall sends out there decisions by May … not really expecting an SGR so May it is … =[ … is it May yet ?

marshall by may sounds good to me" )

There’s a thread on here that states when USC decisions go out. It says “by April 1st”.

I think they’re talking about freshman applicant decisions

Hi everyone,
I’m a freshman from a UC and hoping to transfer into USC my sophomore year with an undecided major. I have been getting B+s for most of my classes, but recently I found out that I LEGIT failed a GE class. I swamped myself with tons of extracurricular and jobs, so rescuing my F from that class became impossible. :frowning: Honestly, I have always been a good student, with great scores from high school and college (if you don’t factor in that class of course). I can retake the course this spring quarter and whatever I get can override the F (so the F won’t factor into my UC-GPA, but it’s still on the transcript). But, I found out that USC actually factors in both the original score and the retake score, so that sucks for me. Should I even retake it? Yesterday, USC emailed me for my Winter Quarter grades and I was planning on physically sending in my transcript with a letter to explain that F. I’m at a loss for words. What should I do? I know I have a USC counselor who will be managing my application, so should I email her and let her know my dilemma? Also, what can I do for spring quarter that can help me? Take more units? This has been driving me crazy. Any help is appreciated. Thank you guys so much!

Hello! Can I ask what your Spring GPA was when they did the SGR? I have a really good essay too and a 3.9 my first semester. I took all upper level major courses and overloaded myself this semester so I am looking at a 3.2 - 3.3. I am a freshmen with about 36 credits.

SIDE NOTE: Do you play LOL?

@markyang
Thank you so much for the advice! I decided to get in touch with my admission’s counselor after you posted that they have a small say. They are very nice by the way and got back to me within a couple hours!

Anyways it was very nice of you to help us out.

how do you know and get in touch with who your councelor is?

Any other Trojan Transfer Plans out there? Did one year at SMC and at the end of Spring I will have 31 units.

@bwwinthehouse my second semester gpa was around a 3.4 so it was better than my first semester’s. but i think what they really want to see is that you just don’t fail your classes. or get too many C’s or W’s.

Why yes, i do play LoL… LOL so random. do you?

@sarah. No problem! here to help haha
