Official USC 2014 Transfer Thread

For the recommenders, I’m a freshman but I should get my professors to write them? and for the activities section…should I talk about my college activities or high school? School just started for me and I dont think I will be fully involved until a month or two. & lol sorry for all the questions, but whats the quick self take?

@iloveasianguys

Oh ok I see now, your taking it to improve upon the first grade you received. If that’s the case I would wait until maybe a week before the deadline to withdraw from a course. Calculate you grade and determine if you could potentially score higher than the first try. If not, drop it. Just try and maybe explain your reasoning of English course troubles in one of your essays.

Good luck!

@blandior

Its not too early to apply, if you are doing well in school, and did fairly well in high school you should be alright. You will always have 0% chance of NOT getting in if you do NOT apply. If you apply you at least have a shot and if you don’t get in the first time, always try again.

Since you are so new to college, get to know your professors well, you can still use one for a recommendation. In addition to that if you can still stay in contact with one or two favorite teachers from High school try and get a rec from them. Keeping in contact is key. Oh, and if you have a job or community service group you can potentially ask for a recommendation from a manager as well.

If you feel like you need any more help or even have a question your welcome to send me a PM on here. I’d be happy to help.

@sedulousaeris that’s a good idea. i have til mid oct so i’ll see what I can do. i have another essay due before then but if it fails, i’ll just do another option hopefully next sem. Thanks. And I don’t know what to explain for my english in the application. If I were to do it in the additional info section then I don’t want to sound whiney and say that my teachers hate me or something because like I said, when I was in Davis, I got Bs on my essays. So o.O i’m at a loss there but thanks for your input again! I really appreciate it~~

I am taking an alternative to the required writing class (Philosophy, as opposed to the standard English writing class) at my CC since I had already passed the equivalent AP for that English class with a 4 my senior year. Will they still accept AP credit for that test even though it’s for a class that’s required for everyone?

And I think all AP score of 4 or 5’s are only accepted as elective credit at USC rather than substitutes for courses? Idk, please help, this stuff is too much for me to keep track of, haha.

@Alexision I think you are right that USC does not give any class equivalencies for AP English credit. You might want to take the 2nd semester of writing just so you can be considered for admission at USC, but contacting an Admissions councilor would probably help more.

@Blandior I would personally wait closer to the deadline so you have something to talk about. Plus, you may love your current school, which would make applying pointless lol.

anyone know what we write in the quick takes?

does usc need letters of rec for transfers? bc on common app it says it requires one…

@Saltedcashews

Letters of recommendation are optional, however some specific schools under USC do require them.

So it depends on what program your applying under.

Who do we write under the advisor? (In the education section for the common app) at my school, we’re not specifically assigned a counselor/advisor so I was confused to who I should put down…

has anyone here attended or attends pasadena city college and has taken or knows of anyone that has taken phio 25?!! if so please PM me!!!

@sedulousaeris so i got back my essay and i got a c?!!! i don’t understand. ok i have an option. there’s another community college that offers usc’s writing req but it’s a philosophy class. idk who the teacher is since it says “staff” do you think i should take that instead, get a W in my english class or like you said soldier the english class and not get a W? i haven’t taken a phio class before but like i said, i’ve taken the eng req and got a C and I want that to be a better grade. I appreciate your input!

How do you calculate your USC gpa?

Also, would the EE department require a letter of recommendation?

@h3llfire741

Look at all the transferable courses in your articulation agreement and calculate the average upon what you got in those.

@blandior It asks you to describe yourself in three words, so I’m assuming you just put an adjective in each box since there are three of them.

If you don’t have an academic advisor, maybe contact your academic advising office and see what they say?

Help with W’s?! Does three look bad? My first year of CC I got a W but it was like a mistake because I signed up for a class but was on a waitlist for another class that I needed. The teacher told me on the first day of the drop deadline that I got in the class so I dropped my other class - hence the W. My second year of college (Davis) I took a class but was failing the tests but over there, it’s called WPD (Withdraw - Permission - Department) something like that. But I called the registrar and they said on my official transcripts it won’t show up but I checked my unofficial transcript and the class is there with WPD. I’m back at CC and I’m taking the English req and I have a bad grade in the class but another CC is offering the writing req as a philosophy class as a fall late class and I’m planning on taking it since my grade in my current english class is bad. So, with that being said, if I take the philosophy class, I would have to drop my english class → 3 W’s. I am going to explain the first one. But does 3 W’s/2 W’s technically look bad?!! My gpa is really low like a 3.0 so I need all A’s to boost my GPA up. I have all A’s in my classes except for English!!! Advice please!!!

@ iloveasianguys

Contact your USC advisor about that first W you received when you were wait-listed for the other class. That should not count. They are just looking for people who drop classes on a usual basis to avoid flunking.

The current problem concerning this English class is kind of a “rock and a hard place” situation. The W won’t look great, but if you cant do better than a C getting a repeat grade in a repeat course will look even stranger on the transcripts… and bring your gpa down some. If you really cant get the English to an A or B. I would probably drop it.

The Philosophy class could be a good thing, but I would check to see if USC accepts it under one of the Core requirements first.

@sedulousaeris

Alright. I will. I did not mention it when I applied last year since I had only one.

Please ignore my last post lol I don’t have 2 W’s. I only have 1. Well, I’m taking an English course in my CC that does fall under the req but USC accepts 4 of the English courses, and I am taking the second to highest level. And when I was in my first CC, I took part two of the three english courses that they accept. I can’t get a B since my gpa is a 2.9 and if I get all A’s I can raise it up to a 3.1. And I need all the A’s I can get.

Yeah, it falls under. The only prob with that class is the teacher is new so I don’t have any background information on him/her. But I will go on the first day to see how it is and if I like it, I’ll take it. Thanks so much for your advice!!! So I am in two situations: take english, possibly end up with a B or C, which would not help my already bad gpa. Take the philosophy class, have another W, but maybe get an A??

Does anyone know how competitive the Price School of Public Policy is?

Hi, I am currently a sophmore at a community college with a 3.7gpa with strong and multiple extracurricular, but because I had to move mid way across the semester, I had to drop 3 classes (I am definitely putting this on my common app), but overall this semester I still have 13 credits. And all together, I have about 5 w’s I think. Is this going to heavily affect my chances?
