i just got my acceptance letter today. it was dated jan. 31. i logged into the explore USC site, and there was no info concerning scholarships. :( maybe it's because im a nmsf as moneylicious was saying

They may not have info on you yet, since you seem to be part of the second wave of acceptances. I am a nmsf finalist, and I was informed I was a presidential candidate, which really doesn't do me any good, since I can get half already if I become a finalist.

i'll take ur 16K

Well, I don't know if I'm putting USC as my first choice for natinal merit, so if I do happen to get the presidential scholarship (or, as I can't help hoping for, the trustees scholarship), it'll be a good backup.

Undercover Brother......i used the USC ID that was assigned to me when i applied (it's in all of my letters)....i remember reading that some people received more than one ID number, but i've had the same one through the whole process....to be more specific about what i did though, i just found the letter that confirmed their receipt of my app and used the number on the top of the page...hope that helps!

BookAddict, how do you know you are a finalist for NM? According to my semifinalist packet, they're not mailing notification of finalist status to high schools until February 3, 2006, and not mailing it to finalists' homes until February 8, 2006.

I know that the vast majority of semifinalists are named finalists, but neither you (nor USC) can say anyone is a finalist with 100% certainty until next week. That may have something to do with the delay for many people as far as scholarship info goes.

Decision: ACCEPTED: School of Cinema-Television!!!

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:2160: 740M 720W 700CR

[] GPA:4.45 weighted
[] Rank:6/521
[] Other stats: AP Chem: 5, AP Calc AB: 5
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought they were great; they all fit together and were interwoven; my made-up character profile was extremely detailed.
[] Teacher Recs: I had 4 different teachers fill them out for me; the two I saw were excellent and the other two teachers are known to give great recs (All 4 teachers know me in different ways...which is why I sent so many).
[] Counselor Rec: Good, I assume. She's know me all four years.
[] Hook (if any):??
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Northern California
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Japanese/Chinese
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Other Factors:[list]
[] Extracurriculars: Eagle Scout; Captain Academic Decathlon, Science Bowl; Editor of School paper.
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: I was infinitely surprised that I was accepted considering my lack of media experience (my portfolio list was only a page compared to the 40-ish pages people have said they submitted). I truly think it was my strong essays and teacher recs that did the trick!
[] Other thoughts: I'M SO EXCITED!! I feel so lucky I got into such a selective program.

Are the National Merit and Presidential/Trustee scholarships mutually exclusive? Also, if we didn't put USC as our first choice originally (I can't remember anymore), is it still possible to change it if we DO get finalist status?

I live in NorCal as well :) Wow, a lot of NorCal-ers here

donmesw - I don't know for sure if I'm going to become a finalist. ON my post, though, I accidently typed nmsf finalist (national merit semi finalist finalist) which doesn't make sense. I did say if i become a finalist, though. I'm pretty sure I will be, as you aid, but I'm not positive. I'm just not sure what I will choose as my first choice college if I become a finalist.

And I know that is why USC hasn't sent out that scholarship information yet, and why I'm a candidate for the presidential scholarship when if i do become a finalist and put them as first, I'll get half anyway.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

sendtherain-you can "undo" your scholarship choice before April 19, and choose a new one by May 31.

true_gladiator:
you've already heard from both USC and from the film school?
if so that is really really amazing. i applied there too... SAT's only 2120, but hoping i'll be in the scholarship consideration pile...

is the second wave of scholarships out yet?

(are tehre only two waves?)

I just got my letter today, but it was dated the 27th of Jan.... there wasn't a postmark on the letter, so I'm assuming that it just took a long time to get to me. I'm from Wisconsin.

are scholarships determined by major?? That is, people with less impacted majors (like Asian Studies) will be more likely to get one than another student majoring in Biology?

S got his acceptance today. What does it mean if the Explore USC dates are in April?

^ I just found this site:
http://www.usc.edu/dept/admissions/undergrad/explorehost/html/programdates.html

I guess he is accepted but not eligible for scholarships? Though that's a bit odd, I thought that USC contacted only scholarship candidates early...

Mitsoobishi ~ Thank you, I was afraid this was the case. I don't understand it, but there is probably some administrative reason to it. Oh well, at least he was accepted, that's a great achievement, even if he ends up at another school!

I'm in the same position as your son reasonabledad. Is your son a nmsf who notified USC of his standing in his junior year by any chance?
