~**Official USC Freshman Appeal Thread**~

haha what makes you think that?

My son attends USC and comments on being surrounded by a very social, friendly group of students. Since being part of the Trojan family is key at USC, it appears that USC wants students who are outgoing, supportive, leaders, helpful, likeable and nice.

Also, if you look at the accepted students thread on CC, there appears to be a tendency for USC to accept students who present social, well liked leadership types. Look at the extra curriculars of those who are accepted. There are so many bright, intelligent types with strong achievement as well that it is possible that the positive social aspect is what helps applicants stand out as more likely to be accepted. I have no inside connections to admissions and this just reflects my own opinion.

My sense is that the social, outgoing, leadership-type is just ONE of the many “types” of students USC would like to enroll. For every leader, there needs to be at least several “joiners” or those leaders would have no one to lead! My D, for example, is VERY shy, VERY quiet, and yet she was accepted (last year) to USC with a Presidential scholarship. USC was certainly aware that she was not an outgoing type - she had both an admissions interview and a scholarship interview.

Rather than trying to fit into some sort of mold you think is the one type of student accepted, focus on displaying what makes you unique and special and how you have/will pursue you own passions.

Congrats to those admitted! I think it’s great that USC gives applicants a serious second chance to get in. So many schools just toss appeals in the trash and I think it’s glad they respect the fact that there are so many deserving kids whose applications should get a second read.

To alamemom: Thanks for making an excellent point and congrats to your daughter’s acceptance with the Presidential scholarship. You are right that there are a variety of students at USC as demonstrated by the large number of various clubs and activities.
Each applicant should try to shine and highlight their talents/special qualities.

is there a way to transfer to USC from UCSD after 1 year?

Yeh, USC might be looking for leadership qualities as well as potential. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t have the best grades, but I did write about personal circumstances that held me back from achieving my full potential. And I also heavily expounded upon my e/c and my leadership roles in them (citing proof of course) cuz the USC app wasn’t enough at the time. I did attach an additional essay on one specific volunteer event that not only showed my willingness to help and volunteer but also my leadership qualities…
so I guess that’s what they’re looking for?

Btw, any one know when the financial aid packet arrives for appeal admits? I seriously can’t afford 50k… or even like 30k for that matter…

@futureisbetter: have you already sent in all the required taxreturn/finan aid info…
arggh, after sending in my tax returns earlier this week, they’re now requesting a “Schedule A” which i apparently DONT have…yeah, i just hope i get the package in time (should be come in a wk-2wks after submitting the required docs) before the appeal sir deadline…

I had my counselor call them regarding the financial aid, and the admissions lady put a note in my file saying that I will not commit until I receive a financial aid package. So I think it should be alright if we don’t commit until an aid package is received. I think it would be somewhat foolish to commit blindly.

That being said, I turned in all my tax forms around priority deadline back in March (save for W-2s sometime in April). Hopefully I’ll receive something soon. The aid office said “5-10 business days” which translates to 1-2 weeks.

Have any of the sucessful appealers been able to submit their enrollment deposit online yet?! I’ve been trying to since Sunday but no such luck yet :(

My son told me that you have to wait until July 1st before you can do it online. In the meantime besure to send in the post card that came in the brochure you got with your admission packet.

So my dad called USC today (Friday), and so apparently it seems that they looked at my finaid file for the first time… and now I have to fax in a couple of doc’s. not a biggie.

But when is the SIR deadline for appeals? It didn’t say anything in the e-mail…
and I REALLY cannot commit without knowing how much I would have to pay cuz I can’t even afford like $30k… so yeh. Anyone know more info about this?

Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I just joined this site, and had a question about the appeal for USC. Since I’m a transfer student and just got my letter of rejection today, is there still a possibility of appealing? If so, what must I do? I’m really confused with what other people have said. Was there a deadline to appeal?

The enrollment deposit site does not work following May 1st. You have to mail or fax in the enrollment forms found in your “Welcome to USC” packet. As for the commitment deposit, tell the admissions office that you cannot submit it until you receive your financial aid package. They will be more than willing to accommodate you.

My son sent in the post card. Was there another form in the packet he was to send in? He was not able to log in at all to the following site: WWW. USC.EDU/DEPOSIT. In the booklet in his admission packet it says you can log onto this site between June 1st and August 1st to fill out the enrollment form and pay deposit fee. So this is not true then? We should just call admissions?

kristisu: Go to this thread. There are a few people who are trying to appeal their transfer decision. Maybe you can find out from them.

Thank you very much GreNerd.

You know I find it interesting that when you have a multiracial background or even just a minority background schools will look at you differently. And good luck to you I hope you do get admitted. However what if you did not have your race to argue with them about? I am just curious because because I know if this were to happen to someone without a multicultural background and they had no back up plan, they’d be out of luck…JUst curious

Just called USC, Spring Admits are still being downloaded into the system. I was told you should be able to log into the system tomorrow to make your deposits!
