Reflection
I don’t know why I got in, but I’m glad I did. UVA is great. I would have to say that the overall admissions process is very holistic, my numbers weren’t the best but I feel as if other aspects of my app may have made up for that.

Strengths: Transcript shows a desire to challenge myself beyond what school typically offers
Weaknesses: Standardized tests
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I was accepted because of my essays and the obvious amount of opportunities that I have taken in order to challenge myself in the classroom when the school couldn’t.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: South Carolina Honors, ECU, Campbell, Morehead-Cain Finalist (UNC presumably)
General Comments:
If you feel like you have a low test score, it’s not the end of the world, supplement it with a killer essay.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Hi everyone! Congrats on the acceptances and for those who were deferred I really hope you get in during the regular decisions round! I too was accepted out of state (OOS) and I’m from Connecticut. I am actually really speechless about my acceptance. I am new to CC, but I see that a lot of people posted their stats so I’ll post mine too:

SAT (New): Math: 590 (Yikes!) and Reading 610 (Ehh) – Quite frankly I am truly shocked especially due to these really mediocre scores

GPA: 3.8 (un-weighted), 4.34 (weighted)

Senior course load: AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP English Literature, Piano (elective) Biomedical Innovations, and AP Government and Politics

Black Female

First generation

Top 10% at a public magnet school

Great community service (Examples: STEM Mentorship Program, Pathfinders Club Co-Guide, Interact Club, Mayors Youth Leadership Council, Club Francophone (a club that I created on my own) etc.)

Extracurricular activities: Dance, Swim, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, volunteer at my local congregation (ex. usher, children’s bible study)

My Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior grades remained consistent (Freshman year I got only two B+ and got straight A’s during sophomore and junior year)

I don’t think my guidance counselor sent my first quarter grades of my senior year (But if she did, then my grades were just A’s)

I’m guessing my essay was really good! I thought it told my story well, but I didn’t think it was that good.

I really am still shocked

Although I made it past the regionals in the Jefferson’s Scholarship, I just looked at my status yesterday and unfortunately I didn’t advance on (which sucks, because I’m out of state and I could have really benefited from the scholarship financially, but oh well!! I hope other nominees have better luck with the Scholarship!!)

Anyhow, good luck to everyone!!

Reflection

Strengths: i would say my course load mostly. I’m pretty lucky to go to a school thats going to allow me to graduate with 13 AP’s. also the supplemental essay that i sent to UVA was my favorite of all the essays i wrote for other schools.
Weaknesses: definitely my ACT and also the fact that my school is incredibly competitive so i knew a lot of kids competing for only 2 or 3 spots
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i honestly don’t know why i got in I’m pretty shocked

I guess her personality didn’t shine through to make her stand out of the pack from all of the others who looked just like her on paper. Confused. :frowning:

Job/Work Experience: tutoring organization where we donate a portion of our earnings to a charity
Volunteer/Community service: Local museum and an organization that my dad is on the board of (basically a boarding school that gives kids who were in really bad home environments a primary and high school education) didn’t stress these too much in my application because I didn’t spend too much time in either
Summer Activities: performing arts camp
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common app: Honestly, I’d say 10/10. I worked my butt off on it and writing has always been my strong point. I used an extended metaphor to explain how words went from being my greatest weakness to my greatest strength.
Supplements: Really really good. I liked them a lot, thought they were really original. My advice: think outside of the bo

Teacher Rec #1: AP English teacher (also my 9th grade honors teacher) idk how to rank it because I didn’t read it but she definitely witnessed my growth between 14 y/o and 16 y/o me and she knows that I love writing more than anything… said she’d “take care of me”
Teacher Rec #2: Honors Spanish teacher (10th and 11th) also didn’t read. I had less of a connection with her than my English teacher but I was really dedicated in her class and stuff. I hope it was good.
Counselor Rec: lol I really hope it’s good because I’ve had way too many meetings with him so I figure he knows me pretty well.

Summer Activities:
Was a People to People student ambassador a few years back, volleyball during freshman and sophomore years, volunteering at hospital, research project, work A LOT

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Really proud of my Common App essay, talked about how I think political parties are damaging our political culture, 10/10
UVA essays both came from my heart, I talked about how my favorite word is “community” and my extreme love for the band ABBA. Neither really came off as pretentious or trying to sound smart and I really showed my interests through both, I would give both a 9/10 simply because the word limit was a sort of barrier

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: We’ve been neighbors/family friends for years, had her for two years in a row, knows me well and has always liked me, 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: Spanish teacher, most well-behaved kid in the class but I was always pretty quiet, also the Spanish club adviser, probably 8/10
Counselor Rec: Loves me and I go to her pretty frequently, but I’m sure she’s written countless this year so doubt it’s too personal, 7/10

Reflection

Strengths: Grades, Class Rank, Test Scores, Activities, overall I’m a well-rounded student and my application stressed my strengths and passions
Weaknesses: AP scores, no major awards, subject test scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: deferred from University of Pennsylvania, accepted UVA, only two I’ve heard back from

General Comments: Considering I’m in-state, one of the top students at my school, and my school generally sends about 10 people to UVA every year, I wasn’t too surprised to be accepted but I’m excited nonetheless! I plan on waiting to see where else I am accepted before making a final decision.

GPA: 4.44/4.0, no.1 in the class

ACT: 35
SAT II: Math II:800, Chem: 800
5APs: All 5 and 1 A in Calc III from Stanford Online.

OK essays: not a fantastic writer honestly.
Strong EC:

  1. Started and organized a pretty big local community service. Had the local government apartment leader write an recommendation for me. She knows my project really well.
  2. Other services.
  3. Learning art for around 13 years. Part-time artist with a personal website (fun fact: I missed the art portfolio deadline)
  4. Self-designed biomedical research
  5. I used to be an exchange student from China. I came to US and became the first one to transfer in the program.
  6. Admission Ambassador, NHS student leader, school newspaper staff artist, school magazine art editor etc.

What else: I was deferred last December from Harvard and wasn’t happy about it. The UVA decision came really suddenly today and really cheered me up.
Good luck to everyone! Ya’ll will get to wonderful schools!

Strengths: I had great ACT and AP Scores, succeeded in two dual enrollment math classes, will have taken 8 AP classes and 10 Honors classes by the time I graduate, and am a full time Virtual Virginia pilot program student. I also am a nationally ranked competitive swimmer and spent a lot of time at practice throughout high school.
Weaknesses: My ACT math score was on the low side, need a lot of help financially
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think they really liked my scores, participation in Virtual Virginia, and commitment to USA swimming.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: University of Pennsylvania (rejected), Catholic University of America (accepted), Bridgewater College (accepted) - I still have many more to come!

General Comments: Congrats to everyone who was accepted - maybe I’ll see you next year! Good luck to everyone who was deferred or denied as well - you are going to find the right place!

Classics rock - maybe see you next year!

[B]Reflections:*
Strengths: my test scores are great - my extracurriculars are solid - my recommendations are solid
Weaknesses: I should’ve put more effort into having a hook they could define me as - in my application it is unclear “what” “type of student” I am - I’m all over the place - my school is also very competitive which deflates my gpa and rank
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: they didn’t get to my application or cause I’m OOS and not a “special interest” student
