I have been thinking about this year’s applicants all day, with an empathetic and somewhat heavy heart, remembering what those final few hours were like for my son last year. The feelings of uncertainty and apprehension were overwhelming. On the one hand you want to know what your decision is, but in another way, you’re almost afraid to look for fear of being disappointed.

This evening some of you will be given a chance to realize your dream of attending UVa. If you accept the school’s invitation, you will spend the next four years exploring all the University has to offer the young men and women who are educated on its historic Grounds.

Others will not be so fortunate. Regrettably Dean J and her colleagues aren’t able to offer admission to every qualified student who wants to go to UVa. If you are one of those privileged to receive an Offer, I encourage you to make the most of your opportunity if you decide to enroll at the University.

For the rest, I urge you, as much as it hurts to do so, to rise above your disappointment and move forward in a positive way to find another school that meets your needs and is a good fit for your talents and personality. And wherever you attend, make the most of that opportunity as well.

All of you have so much to offer UVa and other schools. Regardless of what your Status Page says tonight, choose a place where you can find your niche, have fun and make a difference while also growing in knowledge.
