Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2350

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Academics, ESSAYS!
[] Weaknesses: ECs (I have moved around a lot so it was hard to find continuity in my ECs. Nevertheless, I did what I cared about and I think it showed in my essays)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Harvard and accepted at a couple of safeties
[/ul]General Comments: I really think that your essays and recs are the most important parts of your app after your transcript. If you have a good transcript relative to the rest of your school and your SAT scores are within range (of course, higher is better, but that should not be your biggest focus), then you really need to reflect your personality in your essays. I have a few friends who got deferred or rejected. Some had better “stats” than those who were accepted. Future applicants, I advise you to begin the writing process in the summer. I hate to see fellow classmates work so hard for 4 years but procrastinate on writing a couple of essays. Through your ECs and essays, you should show who YOU are. I can’t stress this enough

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely my transcript. SAT scores, in state
[] Weaknesses: My extracurriculars. They weren’t impressive and I only had a few leadership positions, but I did show commitment. I guess as long as you show that you do other activities besides studying all day, you’re good.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Challenging course load, stats
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: JMU EA
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
I am sooooo excited!!! I literally started sobbing when I read the letter! Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to those who got deferred or denied. To future applicants, definitely keep your grades up, because your transcript is the most important part of your application! Also join extracurriculars that you care about. Don’t join things that you think are impressive. Believe me, writing the extracurricular essay is so much easier when it’s something you genuinely like. Write your essays early! Start thinking about them over the summer, because it takes a while to brainstorm some ideas. Don’t stress too much about the application. As long as you have the right stats, write good essays, and have some extracurriculars, I think you’ll be fine.

Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t see either, but one was from my club sponsor who taught me french for three years, and the other was from a math teacher who has a framed picture of me in his class… so i’m assuming they’re solid.

DS rejected - 1950 SATs (680M, 660CR, 610W), 3.9 W GPA, top 15%, 10 APs, leadership (started a very impactful club), long-term activity commitment, great letter of reference, very good essay, unique background, double legacy, in-state. And, truly, an incredibly nice, good, well-rounded person. I’m bummed, but not surprised. We knew it was a reach. I’ve heard similar horror stories in the recent past. I’m only posting here so that future applicants can have a frame of reference. It always stings a little more when your own alma mater rejects your child, but we have many other wonderful offers in hand and are still waiting on a few more decisions so I have every confidence it will all work out in the end. Sigh.

Reflection
Strengths: I actually have no idea what my strengths were. Maybe my leadership or my innovation in my essays, but even the essays were poorly written. It could honestly be due to random human variance that I got in.
Weaknesses: Scores/Grades
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea how I got accepted.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Tulane; Accepted to George Mason and James Madison Universities.
General Comments: I honestly believe that being from Northern Virginia boosted my chances and the fact that I had decent EC’s. However, I am not sure why they chose me because honestly, anyone I know could get into UVA (this is by no means meant to undermine the admissions counselor or the school). I think that if you’re choosing to apply you have a decent metacognition of your capability at this school. It could have been a bad day for your application, and honestly, I believe those that got deferred and rejected are equally smart as those who got accepted. Don’t think too much of my scores or anything here, because really, it’s the holistic review that really counts. However, to those applying (juniors!), do look at my scores to realize that a 2400 is not necessary to be accepted to UVA. All you have to do is be yourself and wait it out.

It has no point!” even though I had tried to perfect it. And although I tried my best for the UVA supplements and really liked them, I decided later that they were way too flowery…and I also feared that my ECs would seem mediocre or that my recs wouldn’t be strong enough (since I never saw them).
