Subjective:
Essays: Fairly good I’d say. One about my work on the Obama campaign and how it changed my life, another about my favorite word (its a long, joke word in Dutch, so it emphasized by bilingual…ness). I think my essays were quirky and not cliche.
Teacher Recs: One was definitely very good, the other was probably just fine.
Counselor Rec: Counselor loves me
Hook (if any): Probably my bilingual/foreigner status (Im a permanent resident, but Dutch citizen), and my dedication to my intented major of political science.

Okay, looking at other peoples stats, ** CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW I GOT IN?!?!?**

b]Decision: Accepted **

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT Verbal: 800
[] SAT Math: 700
[] SAT Writing: 770
[] SAT Total: What, you got into UVA and you can’t add? 2270.
[] SAT II: 770 (chem), 720 (lit)
[] ACT: N/A
[] AP/IB taken/scores: AP Chem (5), AP Lang (4), AP World (5). Enrolled in AP Calc BC, AP Psych, AP Lit, AP US Gov
[] GPA weighted: 4.3? Something?
[li] GPA unweighted: 3.91
[/li]

[/ul][ b]Subjective:**[ list]
[] Essays: Stellar. I was brutally honest - it’s hard, and it makes you vulnerable, but it’s usually worth it. I’m a writer, I can’t do anything else.
[] Teacher Recs: Never saw them, but I asked teachers who knew me well and liked me. I chose a math teacher and an English teacher so as to present myself as academically balanced.
[] Counselor Rec: Never saw it, but I know my counselor told colleges I had mono to excuse my poor grades 2nd quarter senior year. She’s really great like that.
[] Hook (if any): I’m an outspoken jewish lesbian who wants to study chemistry. I’m cool like that.

[/list]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Fairfax, VA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Ashkenazi
[] Gender: Unicorn
[] Legacy Yes/No: No
[] Recruited Yes/No: No
[] Important ECs: Gay-Straight Alliance (secretary, public relations, 3 yrs), Amnesty International (2 yrs), Science Olympiad (competitor, tutor, 1 yr), Science Fair (competitor, 2 yrs)
[] Likely Letter Yes/No: nah

[/ul]Other Factors: I told you, I’m cool. Also, I won an academic award in physics, was a national merit commended scholar, and took fun summer classes at CTY.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: For years, everyone told me I’d never get into college because I wasn’t involved in enough after school activities. So, ***** you guys. I did get into college, because I’m smart, and I worked my ass off, and I’m driven to succeed. You and your honor societies and student leadership groups know where to shove it.
And if you got in, well, congratulations. You are obviously a pretty bright kid. Can’t wait to meet you! I’ll be the one with the purple hair and the bell bottoms.
To those applying for next year: Just be yourself. Don’t join a club just to beef up your resume, and whatever you do, DON’T write what you think a college wants to hear. Just write who you are. Honesty is rare, and I think they can tell - it makes your portfolio a lot more interesting. Those poor admissions staff members have to read a lot of essays, you know?

You have something UVA wants, which speaks louder than test scored. Relax.
Probably, they really liked your reccomendation or essay.

This is the year of the Asian, they say. Plus, they are not weighting the SATS so hard either. Congratulations!

If you are at at the top of your class, in a particlualry rural, not college prep type of high school - that probably is a help too.

haha. so apparently, i am now considered an ‘international student’ at UVA, because of my visa. so i’m curious, did that have anything to do with my acceptance? would if be harder to get in as an international or an in-state student?

harder as international, I’m pretty sure. Because you’re considered in the out of state pool.
