Official UVA Transfer Thread Fall 2011

I don’t expect to get in as I’m OOS (Maryland) and currently attend a CC but one can dream right?

61 credits, 3.9 GPA if it matters.

JustCollege,

If you’re applying to be a sophomore, that means you’ll be applying around this time next year, meaning you’ll only have Fall semester grades to show. With that, colleges, especially UVA, will put more weight on your HS transcript and your SATs. I would suggest finding a way to show them that you are above the rest.

If you’re instate, you’ve got a good chance, but if you’re concerned over poor HS performance or just want to improve your chances, retake your SATs or do well in your first semester. You do not have to retake your SATs/ACTs, but it is a requirement to at least show some standardized test on your application. Don’t concern yourself over the average, you should be striving to reach and maintain a 4.0.

Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions!

CGCGCG26,

I think you’ve got a good chance so don’t count yourself out. You’re more than just a number/statistic, so be confident as an applicant!

I’m applying currently a freshman hoping to be a soph at UVA

HS GPA: 3.78 weighted (hs doesnt do unweighted) 6 AP’s
College GPA: 4.0 first semester (Im in state and go to a community college)
SAT: 1940 (560 cr, 770 math, 610 writing)
ACT composite: 29
Essays: I believe decent to strong
Teacher Rec: Very good

JustCollege,

I’ll add to Sephyre’s response and say that the average gpa of admitted transfers is ~3.4. However, more junior transfers are accepted than sophomores, so you will want to say well above this if you hope to transfer that soon. As Sephyre said, they will place a lot of emphasis on your high school grades, but if those weren’t strong, get involved in a leadership position on campus, do something to help you stand out. Good luck!

Good luck, Rubix32 and welcome to CC and this UVA transfer thread. Why do you guys want to transfer to UVA? Are there any personal reasons you have for transferring?

I’m a psych major, so I wrote in one of my essays that one of the leading psychologists in the concentration that I would like to study (its very specific) is a professor at UVA. I also love everything that UVA is, especially the pretty campus :)

Thanks for the welcome, I also applied to Va Tech and George Mason so I’ll see where things lead to. I’m majoring in EE so we’ll see where I get accepted to. I’m definitely going to pick UVA if I get accepted though. I’m also aware that VT has a slightly better engineering program.

Despite that, I just felt more at ease when I visited UVA rather than Tech. I live 10 minutes away from Mason and I was hoping to be away from home for a while.

I chose to go to a CC first semester despite having a decent HS record because I just didn’t feel “ready” to move out of the house (maybe its just me?). I’m definitely ready to transfer and live the “real” college experience.

I would honestly major in everything if I could seeing as how almost everything interests me, but I’ve decided to stick to business, particularly finance. What kind of psychology are you into surf, and who’s the professor at UVA?

I’m not too into the whole “college experience” idea - I just want to get in and get out asap but that’s just me haha

Well I’m really into social psychology and specifically stereotypes/discrimination. Charlotte Patterson is one of the leading researchers on issues pertaining to sexual orientation and the affects that society can have on those individuals. She has done a lot of research on adoption studies pertaining to that as well. I find it all very interesting.

rubix32 - are you at nova?

Yup, Annandale campus. Already sick of this place haha and quite bored of it actually. I do think that it was a very good place to spend my first year of college though.

Oh wow, it’s already April - not even a month left before we find out. Good luck to all applicants!! ;)

rubix - I’m at Manassas, but I’ve spent two years here. Definitely ready to be done!

So what other schools are you all applying to?

I applied to UVA, UMD, UNC, VT, and UNC. So far I’ve gotten into Tech and UMD

haha the second UNC was supposed to be William and Mary…

I applied to VT as well (still waiting), and JMU. I thought of applying to W&M, but it’s the one school (besides UVA) that I didn’t apply to out of high school, so it would have involved a lot more work (hunting down high school transcripts that are already on file everywhere else). I probably should have applied, but glad I saved the $60.

chance me pleaseeee
currently a sophomore at a small liberal arts school (instate applicant)
College GPA: 3.4 ish
HS GPA: 3.5 uw, 3.7w
SAT: 1950

i have really decent extra curricular, awards, and leadership and I believe I wrote decent essays (hopefully)

applied to the school of liberal arts and science. probably going to major in media studies!

I wasn’t planning on applying for the THIRD TIME, but it was worth a shot. Maybe this time, they’ll see how much I’m shoving myself into admission every year haha
As a senior I got flat out rejected, then last year for fall transfer 2010, I got on the waitlist with a 3.8 GPA… but it was probably because I only applied with 12 credits

jyeva13 - we are on all the same boards! :)

i think you have a decent chance. being in-state will help you. your gpa isn’t terribly competitive, but it’s in line with average admitted student gpas. good luck!!! maybe we’ll end up at the same place!
