Official UVA Transfer Thread Fall 2011

I have outstanding financial aid documents that aren’t due until May 14. Good news? haha

@Sephyre
I almost chose the first one, but then decided to go with the second. Basically, I had already written an essay that went along with the second topic, so I just went ahead and polished it up. Water Shortage Crisis, hmmm, we’ll see how well that fares, haha.

[UVa - Transfer Admission](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_transfer.htm)

So according to the UVa Transfer Admissions record, those applying to the College of Arts & Science have about a 35%-40% chance of being offered admission. Considering a good chunk of that number could be VCCS transfers, does anyone have an idea as to how much room is left for in-state applicants (non-VCCS)? Am I looking at this the wrong way perhaps?

This wait is pretty intense - hang in there everyone, May 1st is almost upon us!! :)

I chose the first one and a lot of people have told me my essay is risky, but creative. P.M. me if you want to know what it’s about, but I don’t want my identity to leak on CC… yet haha

YooJin1992,

Thanks for the much needed revival of this thread. According to a Transfermer response, in the 2300 applicant pool, 20% are approved GAA. So there’s half your acceptance, meaning the other 15-20% would be for instate/OOS applicants? Roughly 400-500 spots remaining? I’m just generalizing; might have missed a factor, but that’s my take on the numbers.

However, I think I’m right according to this:

According to the cavalierdaily, (specifically: [Transferring to a new community | The Cavalier Daily](http://www.cavalierdaily.com/2009/02/11/transferring-to-a-new-community/)) “Hessing said about 40 to 60 percent of in-state transfer students come to the University from community colleges, including those who gain automatic admission through the Guaranteed Admission Agreement as Filer did.”

Here’s my logic: If 20% are approved GAA, meaning in a pool of 2300 applicants, 460 would get in. If 40% of applicants are given admission (roughly 920 accepted), then it would mean GAA or VCCS applicants make up half the pool for transfer accepted applicants. Which falls in line with Hessing’s comment.

Depending on the school (Engineering, McIntire, Nursing, etc), the yield from VCCS will differ, but I’m guessing most of you guys are interested in CAS. What are your opinions/thoughts on this?

Are decisions posted online or mailed on May 1st?

They become available online on May 1st

Thanks. Is that unusual, that decisions coming out on a Sunday?

I hope they come out a few days early!

Does that ever happen? On a Sunday is a bit odd…

They will probably come out on Friday, which is the 29.

For those applying to W&M also, we’ll probably hear from them too! It’s going to be a big day!

Since people are posting their essay topics I’ll just throw in mine,

I chose the rose to represent humanity, delicate and fragile on the outside yet “thorny” and defensive upon closer examination. Also, the rose is used in our most pivotal moments; courtship, applaud, birth, and death. Thus the rose has enough symbolic significance to our race to be a viable representation of humanity as a whole. Deep, I know Hah.

Hey everyone, I’m currently a student at a VCC and applied to UVA for the fall semester with a 3.9 GPA. This semester I have been struggling with a much tougher work load and I fear I might get a C in a French class I’m taking. If I get into UVA (fingers crossed!) and they see that grade is there any chance they will revoke my acceptance? Taking six classes and working is a hard balancing act and I hope UVA takes that into account when seeing final transcripts from this spring.

Decided to go ahead and post in here to help the time pass for the next week…

I ended up choosing the issue of local, national, international concern. I found the essays I wrote for the other option a bit too wishy-washy to really drive home anything additional about me as a unique applicant (if that makes any sense.)

Though, I would absolutely love to see a poll of the most common things that people wrote about. I can almost guarantee there will be an unbelievable amount of constitutions and calculators…

O.P.

@cpscheps:

I don’t work for UVA, nor do I have any idea how their admissions process works (I like to imagine its a huge 3000 person golf leader-board though…), but I can give you my two cents: You shouldn’t lose one wink of sleep worrying about one C in a challenging foreign language class. I would be willing to bet the $212 in my checking account that UVA has never said “This guy looks amazing and we want him at our school” and then let one C in a six class term outweigh everything else in such a holistic application process. They’re doing a lot more than just looking at a cut off for your GPA (which I assume you’d still fly over anyhow.)

O.P

I know that this is extemely risky, but I wrote about gay marriage.

Sent from my DROID2 using CC App

@PenelopeOdysseus:

Thanks for the confidence boost! Waiting this long to hear from universities is just really messing with my head. I hope we all get great news in 11 days!

11 days left… I’ve yet to here from any of the schools I applied to and am slowing losing my sanity, lol—why must they make us wait so long?

As for my essays, in the first I talked about how my experience with DECA competitions and marketing classes in high school opened my eyes to the psychographic aspects of marketing, and how this field became a passion of sorts for me in that time.

Building on that, in the second essay I said I would send a coupon into space, using the metaphor of calling it a “mind control device.” I said it represented humanity because it speaks to the astounding ability for our minds to shift the way we perceive something due to a simple change in price or presentation of the product.

Best of luck to all through the rest of the wait!

All these essays sound great. My guess is that the most common object sent up in space was money or like a dollar bill? Possibly copies of the Declaration (oh geez)…

Surfwakesnow, why do you think writing about gay marriage is really risky?

Just because it’s a controversial topic

In my opinion, gay marriage isn’t a real controversial issue but politicians will make it controversial (known as wedge politics). Every American has the same rights, and there’s no controversy there haha.

Anyone still have the green circle so I don’t feel bad??
