wow, I am shocked by the stats of some people who were rejected. you are all easily top students who will end up at the perfect school for you! I’m pretty sure that any other year you would have all gotten in at vandy.

Decision: Waitlisted

[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: weakness no research awards?
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: waitlisted maybe because of essays?
[li] going to attend? Possibly[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Might visit.

Son was accepted to CAS. He has insisted that I not post his SATs, GPA, etc. because he thinks it is gauche to do so. Let me just say that the stats were just like all the other kids’ who were accepted and waitlisted. He was also accepted to Emory and Wesleyan, waitlisted at Rice. Waiting to hear from Ivies today.

Hilsa: I am so sorry about the waitlist at Vandy – my son accused me of caring more about your decision than his. Although it is obvious that you’ll be happy at whatever school you decide to attend, I hope you’ll give Vandy a second chance to make the right decision and pursue the waiting list option.

I’m an international and still didn’t receive my decision e-mail. Did any other internationals receive their decisions?

Hilsa, I see you mentioned that 6 others from your school got accepted with another 7 or so on the waitlist? I think the number of students from individual schools plays a huge factor on acceptance. Otherwise, I would have expected you to get in.

I’m thinking that had something to do with it.

I’m sure someone thought “Well, this Hillary girl does have lower scores than her peers (although her scores are still good), so she must not have tried as hard or isn’t as intelligent.” Too bad they didn’t know that I’m the girl who worked the hardest in high school. My class wouldn’t have voted me “Most Likely to Succeed” if that wasn’t true.

And I also didn’t have enough luck, I guess.

But all day I’ve been working on my Why Vandy essay. It definitely has my voice in it, atleast my voice that mirrors my essay. And I know so much about the campus from being there for 2 months. I’m just hoping this will help.

im waitlisted too ■■■. hilsa- apparently our 32 ACT’s are a joke in top 20 admissions.

Well, it’s the fact that we had 32s and didn’t have an international award or something to make-up for it.

But we can still hope.

Okay - No offense to all the other waitlistees but for all of CCers that got accepted and are going to accepted students day or send in a deposit lets just drop a postcard to admissions that tells them about hilsa on cc asking them to put her at the top of the waitlist. It may work hilsa - what do you think?

yeah. i’m depositing at wake forest and still trying to get into vandy.

Me too! Weird!

(well, I’m 90% sure I’m depositing to Wake… may deposit to Emory)

I guess Wake Forest is the back-up Vandy.

**Accepted: **

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Tennessee
[] Ethnicity: Black
[] Gender: Female
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: Good scores in school, lotsa of interest/not the best scores in tests or extracurriculars

[/ul]Other Factors:

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I’m pretty sure why- I’m not sure why I was chosen over others. You see these rejected scores? Did you see their financial needs, or lack thereof? Maybe because I’m from Tennessee? And I want to major in East Asian Studies… I’m not sure… Haha…

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: There’s another factor… There HAS to be… I’m poor as dirt and my scores aren’t totally fly… So… Those who got waitlisted or rejected… My condolences, I do know how it feels. (Got rejected from UChicago ED)

Dude, Hillary, if I go to the CAS Open House in April and randomly run into an AO, I will totally put a word in ;)

I know some on here would find it unfair that Shinashi got in. However, I agree with colleges giving preferential treatment to minorities and lower class.

Luke, you’re rad.

And bmorechil, if they gave preferential treatment to lower class, I may have likely been accepted. My EFC is embarrassingly itty bitty. But that doesn’t even make sense to give preferential treatment to the lower class (if you think of admissions like a business, [though idealistically, it does make sense]) because that means colleges would have to hand over more money to us poor kids.

im waiting to fill out my admitted student survey until im 100% sure where I am going. If im not going to vandy, which is what its looking like as of now, I’m recommending hilsa to have my spot in the comments section

^^ Me too - Hilsa = the first “write in” student to win acceptance! I think it may work.

ACT Score 35
GPA 4.0 Unweighted (School does not weigh GPA’s)

4 years Varsity Football, Team Captain, Athlete of the Year; 2 year Varsity Soccer; Most Studious, Homecoming King, Drama; Very Involved in church activities and volunteer work. Vanderbilt Alumni interview went well. He is more factual and scientific than philisophical. Essay was about career goals and how attending Vanderbilt would help attain them. It was articulate and well written but not going to win any literary contest.

Possible Reasons for Rejection : White Christian Male attending TN school may not do much for their “diversity”; Family Income around 65,000 - too much to get Federal Funding, too low to pay 50K a year. Attended very small private school junior and senior year. Counselor part time and brand new - have no idea what her recommendation looked like. Had extremely strong teacher recommendation letters, but Vanderbilt required online recommendations. Therefore, I am not even sure if they were done as we received no contact from the school during the entire process, other than acknowledge receipt of application. This probably sounds strange or paranoid, but I do wonder if perhaps he was “too” Christian. These days when people talk about religious tolerance, I tend to think they mean of everyone other than Christians. However, on the flip side - it is quite possible he was rejected because God has something else planned for His life.

So, to those of you who scored a 32 and are being waitlisted - do not despair. Whatever formula is being used, grades and test scores do not seem to be the biggest factor. Hang in there.

It sure seems odd that he was rejected - bet he did get into a great school, though!

I guess we should have looked into things a bit more. Vanderbilt was the only upper echelon school he applied to. When I said it never occured to us that he would get rejected, I really meant it. Live and learn I guess.
