[] Weaknesses: None, I’m overall perfect.
[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] I was likely accepted due to the recommendation letter from Doc V and my college essay. My workload this year probably had some effect to it. My GPA is lacking but I suppose my ACT is 31. Those smart people at the University probably already knew what a perfect person I am too.

yeah which school is everyone going to? some people didn’t post it in their replies.

I’ll be in the College of Arts and Sciences

Decision: Accepted!!!

Arts and Sciences

[] Job/Work Experience: Mcdonalds…yeah it sucks.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Only the hours required for NHS
[] EC short answer : Indoor soccer. I talked about how I loved playing indoor soccer because the lack of competition made it an amazing sport for someone with little to no athletic ability
[] General Essay : how switching from a private to a public school my sophomore year was a major increase in diversity and made me appreciative of my public high school even though the academics aren’t all that great
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): It was awesome. He talked about my standing in the school, grades, test scores, and me overcoming obstacles to do well in school.
[/ul]

Other:

[ul]
[] State : Illinois
[] School Type: Public school, about 300 in class, horrible academics
[] Ethnicity: white

[ul][]Strengths: Class Rank, ACT, really good recommendations, AP classes
[] Weaknesses: My essay, Grades Freshman year, no leadership experience, lack of community service
[li] Why you think you were accepted: I’m guessing because of my grades, scores and recommendations. I honestly didn’t think I was going to get in and was completely shocked when I got my acceptance letter.[/li][/ul]

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US history (4), physics B (4), English language & composition (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: full 8-period schedule with 5 APs first semester & 4 second semester…no lunch
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): n/a[/ul]Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis): choir (4 years, including 2 in select choirs), teen teaching (2), BBYO & NFTY (2 each)
[] Job/Work Experience: 1 summer as a day camp counselor, currently work as a hostess at a restaurant
[] Volunteer/Community service: teacher/office aide at my synagogue during Sunday school for 2 years, random other things
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): I wrote about teen teaching & how it meant a lot to me and wasn’t just a blowoff class like it is at a lot of schools. I think it was good since I applied to Peabody & had an EC related to teaching
[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): I wrote about my precal teacher and basically how I want to be just like her! It was kind of unoriginal, but again, reinforcing the teaching/Peabody thing
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it):
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): didn’t see them, but one of them was from the same teacher I wrote about in my essay
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): didn’t see it
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): didn’t see it, but it was from my teen teaching teacher
[] Interview: n/a[/ul]Other

[ul] [] State (if domestic applicant): Texas
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: public, but very competitive academically. 636 people in my class
[] Ethnicity: white & Jewish
[] Gender: female
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):[/ul][ b]Reflection**

[ul][]Strengths: test scores (except subject tests) & GPA, probably my rec letters, consistency of my ECs, and I took more classes with increased difficulty every year
[] Weaknesses: SUBJECT TEST SCORES. I immediately regretted sending them. Also my grades and lack of challenging classes freshman year
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my rec letters probably had a LOT to do with it. I didn’t think I would get in since I felt like my grades & whatnot were pretty average for Vandy standards. Also my application had a pretty coherent theme… applied to Peabody, wrote about teen teaching and my favorite teacher, with a rec letter from her and my teen teaching teacher. [/ul]
[/li]

I AM SO HAPPY!!

Accepted arts and sciences!!! Hit up vandy on facebook grats!!!

[] Job/Work Experience: I spent one month this summer as a Crew Boss, making sure the hispanic field workers worked well, incorporating spanish and using it to improve my fluency.
[] Volunteer/Community service: active at a food pantry, various NHS + Key Club stuff.
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): I wrote about the summer job working with the hispanic laborors and how it helped me with speaking Spanish while also giving me a taste of another culture.
[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): I chose the author Kurt Vonnegut as the “person who most influenced you” and honestly, I’m incredibly proud of the essay. It was definitely a selling point for me.
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it):
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): I didn’t see either of the two, but I’m sure they were both great.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): It was very simple, but genuine and complimentary.

[ul][]Strengths: well-roundedness, personal statement.
[] Weaknesses: anything to make me “stand out”, and that god-awful AP Chemistry test score, but I don’t think they consider those very much.
[*] Why you think you were accepted: well-roundedness [/ul]

Job/Work Experience: n/a
Volunteer/Community service: Friendship Circle and Animal Friends ^^ above
Summer Activities: got credit for a psychology class at georgetown summer between sophomore and junior year
Essays (rating 1-10, details): wrote about why I want to study chemistry and science in general over my lifetime. Related plato’s cave to my need to push away the shadows of the cave and understand reality, even if reality still may be a shadow. One of the best essays I’ve written, I’d give it a 9.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): two teacher recs from my gen chem teacher and my AP chem teacher. 10/10. AP chem teacher HATED me since 9th grade and now really likes me–he refused to turn in my rec because he thought that would mean that I would stop talking to him (I’d keep bugging him to send in my rec and I don’t have him for a class this year). I’d given them 8’s or 9’s.

Teacher Rec #1: General Chemistry/AP Psych/Science 12 teacher
Teacher Rec #2: AP Chemistry teacher
Counselor Rec: knew me really well, 10/10
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: n/a

Other

Intended Major: Chemistry
State (if domestic applicant): PA

School Type: Private Prep
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Income Bracket: ???
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): white Jewish girl going into the sciences? not sure if I had a hook really

Reflection

Strengths: Strong grades, strong 1600 score, great essay
Weaknesses: flat–majority of my application was about chemistry and science. Sure I had extracurriculars but both my teacher recs were science teachers and my essay was about chemistry.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: strong academically and extremely passionate about what I want to do
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted early @ Tulane with a presidential merit scholarship. I applied to UMich & UMiami EA but am going to withdraw my applications. If I didn’t get into Vandy I was going to apply to Harvard & WUSTL RD.

General Comments:
Visit Vandy. I had my heart set on Harvard and a friend of mine who attends Vandy said to look into it…I kind of ignored him and didn’t believe that I’d even like Vandy–rich, southern, pretentious. I was 2000% wrong. I visited twice and was absolutely floored. Don’t believe any stereotypes about any school and don’t think you know where you’re going to sophomore year. It will change. Feel free to ask me any questions & GOOD LUCK.

[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): “How I Failed at Sports” wrote about how I tried multiple sports until I realized my love for dance and the confidence that dance has instilled in me
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it):

[/ul]Reflection I think the biggest thing for people reading this is not to look at these posts as what you MUST have. I remember looking through the class of 2018’s results thread crying to myself because these people all sounded so much more qualified than I was, yet many were getting rejected. Unfortunately there’s no way to know for sure what you MUST have to get in, but if you really want to go here then at least give it a try and don’t stress out too much over this board.

[ul][]Strengths: high school courses/grades
[] Weaknesses: essays
[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] I’m honestly not sure other than the fact that I worked my butt off the past few years for this, but I do know that I’ve never been happier!
