Official Vanderbilt 2015 Fall Transfer Thread

Hi,

So I am planning on applying for transfer to Vanderbilt University for the Fall 2015 semester.
I had a few questions and was hoping someone might have the answer to them!

For recommendation letters, can we still use our high school teacher's LOR or do they need to be strictly college instructors.

Is there any advantage being in-state for transfer? (I live in Tennessee but go to school in a different state)

Is it okay that I only have 14 credit hours after this first semester when applying? (i know the minimum is only 12 but does Vandy want more credit hours?)

Does intended major affect transfer admission at all?

Thanks for your help in advanced!

Hi, this is my first post on CC.

I am applying to College of Arts and Sciences for Molecular and Cellular Biology. I currently go to Case Western Reserve University for biomedical engineering, Spanish, Polymer Engineering and Biochemistry. I have declared four majors because I don’t want to graduate early. I have junior standing in all of them. I find out that I am very bored by engineering. I decided to do Pre-med only from now on. I am a sophomore applying for junior year transfer.

GPA: 3.907
95 credits completed including AP, 26 more in progress

Completed Cal 1, 2, 3 and Diff Eq. Engineering Physics 1 and 2. Gen Chem I and II, org chem I and II and pchem I. One year of bio, one semester of biochem. I have finished all the labs for the classes required. I have finished all the engineering core and pre-med requirement including psych.

I decided to truly pursue things that I am interested in. In progress major courses: Engineering Statistics, Biophysics II, Polymer Design, Polymer PCHEM and molecular biology. I am actually enrolled in 8 classes for the semester. I find those engineering classes are not challenging at all.

I have a strong letter from Biophysics I and Intro Polymer. A lot of community service and lab experience.

Am I leaning more towards an acceptance or a rejection?

@transferIntl holy smokes you are insanely impressive. you’ll definitely get accepted but why aren’t you just finishing out at case? you’re already very close to graduating aren’t you? and case is a really good school, both my cousins teach there.

@resipsa338 I still need to do two more years of college. I have junior standing in all four of my majors, Polymer science (BSE), Biomedical Engineering (BSE), Biochemistry (BA), Spanish (BA), but if i want to graduate, I still need to do two more years in Case. Case’s engineering, especially my BME major, is designed so it is really hard to graduate early. I really don’t want to stick around for two more years and take classes that I am really not interested in. Simply going to another a non-engineering major at Case would be a waste of money in my opinion. Case is known for its BME, otherwise there is no point for me to pay 60K per year. I don’t have any scholarship.

Is School of Engineering one of the more competitive schools to get into?

@orangebanana Yeah. Traditionally, i heard engineering school is much harder to get into than the school of arts and sciences. But I am not applying to engineering school though. Are you applying for engineering? What kind of engineering?

Can anyone confirm that the engineering school is much harder to get into?

I’m applying for CS. It’s only offered in the school of engineering. >.<

Also applying to CS. applying from community college

Just submitted my application for Econ. Applying from a LAC

Hello, this is also my first post on CC.

I’ve seen this done so I figured I would give it an attempt.

I am applying to the College of Arts and Sciences for a double major in Communication Studies and Political Science at Vanderbilt University. I completed my application back in November for transferring. I currently attend a Community College in my hometown (I’ll explain later). Here are my stats:

Before HS: Chosen as a participant in the Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (Did independent coursework three summers in a row at Duke University)

HS GPA: 3.28 (Didn’t really apply myself, placed school as a low priority)
ACT: 28
Activities: Mascot, Pep club, Drama club, President of my class, Student Council, President of Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club (Volunteer based club), FCA
Tennessee Scholar

College GPA: 3.75, will graduate summa cum laude
I’ve made the Deans List several times
In the College Honors program
Student Ambassador / Phi Theta Kappa Member / Student Government Association Member
Really good friends with the President, she calls on me to speak on the colleges behalf frequently.
Ned McWherter Scholar (Prestigious program- less than 18 from my state were chosen)
Studied Abroad in Greece this past summer

Kicker: First Generation Student
Highly involved in the community:
I am the youngest employee of my local Chamber of Commerce
Youngest Diplomat for the Chamber
Youngest individual in my communities history to complete the Adult Leadership Class sponsored by our county
Nominated for the Emerging Leader Award (Other nominees in history have been 10+ years older than me)
Owner of a successful and profitable business for the past 5 years. Youngest individual in my communities history to obtain a business license (received it at 16).
Recipient of the Tennessee Small Businesses Development’s Business of the Year award for 2014.
I am the youngest individual to sit on my cities YMCA board.
About six months ago I became the Charter President of a Rotaract club in my city (A community serving organization)
I am the youngest Rotarian in my city’s history.

My letters of recommendation were completed by the President of my College, my local Mayor, and the CEO of my local Chamber (my current boss).

I have been worrying myself sick about this decision. I have a lot riding on this, which makes me nervous. Do you think I have a chance? If so how good are my chances?

Thanks in advance! The people in this thread have been helpful just based off reading their replies to others!

@CCtoVandy‌ I think you have a really good shot! Either way, you sound like a really accomplished person and I would love to meet you sometime. You’ve obviously done a lot more than what most school systems offer!

Hey, y’all. I’m also applying to transfer to Vanderbilt from a public school in the south. Just waiting for one more part of my application to be completed!

I remember last year or two years ago, no one would post on the this forum except the same 5 people. Then suddenly when all of these new kids would post on the forum when they got accepted. Basically, lots of people will watch this forum and not say anything about themselves until their in ( I think it’s a pride thing). Here are simplified Stats

College: BYU-I
31 credits
GPA 4.0 (first semester)
GPA 4.0 (expected for second semester)

High School:
3.23 GPA (I think…) (Unweighted)
ACT 23
Failed and retook sophomore year

Significant Extra-Curriculars:

COLLEGE:
BYU-I Rocket Team Avionics (Worked on the electrical systems with other members)
Joined Dance Team and performed for a big school dance event

HIGH-SCHOOL:
Vice President of Computer Science Club
Varsity Tennis
Two Drama Club performances

I’m nervous how this will turn out. If I had more College Credit, I think I would feel more secure, but I don’t at the moment. If they were to rely on my college credit alone, then this would be a much easier thing. But I don’t feel like I have enough semesters to back me up at the moment. I’ll happily post my acceptance/rejection for the sake of anyone else who feels they are in a similar predicament as I’m currently in.

I was gonna just wach this discussion until decision time because I was nervous but what the heck im going to post anyway.

College: community college in Dallas,TX

Hi @newbee18 thanks for sharing. I’m scared too, but I thought sharing this could only help not hurt. I’m sure these might help someone else who is applying. Your credentials are great! Any reasons why you first attended a community college?

@Keanedawg I agree it might help. Yes due to family issues I had to withdraw from the university I got accepted into and be home. I decided community college would be the better idea if I were staying home. Things are settled now so that’s why I’m applying to transfer

Hey guys so I checked my app status today and it says incomplete because I am missing the college report. However I know 110% sure that I included that in the mailing documents because I bought a huge brown envelope and I triple checked before mailing. I also know they received the mail because I included my transcripts and everything in there with shows as processed on the status portal. I don’t know if I should call the admissions office or mail the document again.

It said my transfer college report was missing, too. But I sent it on 3/10, which is plenty of time to get there before yesterday’s deadline. I emailed the admissions office about it early in the morning, and it showed that my app was complete this afternoon. If anything, I would try to fax it to your admissions counselor so that it gets there quickly if you decide to send it again. Good luck!
