@emilylove, I don’t know much about their selection process for merit scholarships, all i know is I didn’t get one :frowning: what turned you off about it though?

I’m worried that I may not be able to afford Vanderbilt, seeing as a I got no financial aid from Rice University as well. Although my FAFSA said my parents could only contribute $40,000, they still chose to charge me over $50,000 per year. ):

Wow—great stats. Clearly you’re a high literate and will do very well anywhere you go. Move on to plan B fast.

I was rejected. It’s okay as Vandy wasn’t my top choice, but I’m really worried for Ivy Day. Brown has been my number one for years…

I think it’s really interesting how colleges tell if you can fit in at the school or if the school is right for you. I wanted Northwestern University so badly and I made sure that that was in my application and I was accepted. I never really wanted Vanderbilt badly enough, and I got waitlisted. I guess Vandy realized that it wasn’t the right fit for me, which is awesome because now they just narrowed it down for me.

This acceptance was a pleasant surprise. However, considering I wasn’t offered any financial aid, my chances of enrolling at Vandy are low. Nonetheless, I will have a tough decision to make.

I also like the fact that Vandy mails out hard-copy letters (although I would not be a fan of snail mail if I got my decision late). If some other applicants were wondering, my acceptance letter came in a envelope-type package and said “Congratulations” on the front (hopefully this will spare any letter-opening anxiety… or maybe I just ruined the surprise). Good luck to everyone as they move forward

It’s just a coincidence in your case, I believe. I had very little interest in Vanderbilt, never pictured (or wanted to picture) myself there, and only applied because of the name. Come to find out I got in (informed in February or maybe January, I don’t remember … even though I was RD), and learned today that they met the entire cost of attendance with need-based aid, minus about $1,000. So you don’t always need to express passion or desire. How they could have decided it’d be right for me, if they did, I don’t know. I definitely don’t see it as a fit for me whatsoever.

Rejected in Michigan. I had crappy scores (29 ACT and 1310 SAT) so I’m sure I was out of the running from the start. I had an awesome rec letter from an alumni, the best of the ones I’ve read. I had hoped to get into Peabody because I want to open my own school one day and I really was excited for education curriculum. Oh well, Vandy wasn’t my first choice, and I never visited. Notre Dame is where my heart is (fingers and toes crossed for next week), so I don’t mind! :)

I share your skepticism. My son, who was just accepted to University of Chicago and Washington University, St. Louis, was just wait-listed (first “rejection”–waiting for HPYS), presumably because of worries about yield, as he had 790 V; 790 R; 740 W on his SAT; all 5 on his APs ( 8 of them); 94 avg (at a tough Jesuit HS in NYC); great essays/recc.s; but–his sister transferred from Vanderbilt to Harvard last year (along with 2 other Vanderbilt students (3 of the 12 Harvard transfers were from Vanderbilt), so I’m certain they saw my son as a liability. No worries–Chicago is a much better school!!!

Gender: M
Income Bracket: < 70,000$
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths: Extracurriculars
Weaknesses: Test scores and GPA?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think it might have been my GPA because my freshman year was horrible (I had a few B’s), but then after that year, I got straight A’s aside from one B in a semester of AP Spanish.
General Comments: Oh well, it’s not the end of the world I guess. I’m just a bit shocked.

jbstewsaff, I am wondering why your son even bothered to apply to a school that you clearly feel is inferior. What an immature post for a parent.

jbstewsaff: I was admitted to UChicago and WUSTL, and have received a likely letter from Dartmouth. I was admitted to Vanderbilt today. Vanderbilt presumably denied your son because they did not think he was an ideal candidate; not because of yield protection (which is an especially interesting assertion considering that WUSTL generally gets attacked more for yield protection than Vandy).

Most students who apply to quite a few schools will get a wait list or two. We see it year after year on CC. It doesn’t mean the student wouldn’t do well at the school, or that the school doesn’t want the student … it’s just the odds playing themselves out. Top schools just can’t accept every top student who applies. :)
