Official Vanderbilt ED1 Class of 2020 Discussion Thread

ONLY 36 DAYS LEFT TILL APPS ARE DUE!!!

is there any advantage in submitting them early?

^no, it’s not going to affect your admissions chances.

If anyone would take a look at my chances that would be awesome thanks! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vanderbilt-university/1797360-ed-1-vanderbilt-chances-2020.html#latest

Hey everyone! I’m applying ed to vandy however, I have a little problem regarding the essay prompt … How do I write about how much I love an activity and at the same time relate it to me wanting Vanderbilt?

is the extracirricular prompt supposed to also function as your “why vanderbilt” prompt? or should you just focus solely on your activity?

@aglassi that’s where my confusion lies too.

Any help clarifying this will be much appreciated!

I feel like you could spin it in the “Why Vanderbilt” direction, but I think the fact that we’re applying ED sort of outweighs any doubt that the admissions staff might have in our willingness to attend Vandy. Just my two cents though.

Maybe do both? Talk about your passion, and then say how you’re going to make use of the plethora of opportunities at Vanderbilt that will help you continue/grow that passion…for example, if you play an instrument, you can talk about joining the Commodore orchestra etc.

Excited for applying ED :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I was accepted ED last year and I personally did not relate my activity essay to why I wanted to attend Vanderbilt. I just focused on how yearbook gave me leadership and time management skills. Good luck y’all though!

I had a similar experience. I’m a current freshman at Vanderbilt, double majoring in Secondary Education/English. I wrote my essay about a comedy class I took at a Governor’s Honors Program and how it taught me to be okay with being imperfect. I didn’t mention anything about wanting to attend Vanderbilt or why it would be a good fit for me; I focused instead on my personal development through taking that class and what I learned through that particular experience. It was a kinda cheesy essay, but my teacher said it was fantastic (and “suitable for a school like Vanderbilt” or something like that, but I don’t know why). I feel like it was one of the strongest parts of my application. Take that information however you want to; I’m sure they read a whole bunch of diverse essays that take all sorts of angles and approaches to the prompt. Good luck!

Son @ Vanderbilt - ED1 2019… wrote his EC section about how his tennis career shaped his life. He discussed the lifelong dedication to a sport, championship losses followed by championship wins, opportunites for leadership, social connections, etc. He did include his plans to continue playing tennis at VU… through club sports, etc.

Visited this weekend and have officially decided I’ll be applying ED (:

Does anyone think there is a possibility that our decisions will come out earlier than December 15th? I have my AP Calc exam and AP Bio exam that day and I know I won’t be able to focus with my decision coming out later that night!

@Guacamole629 how are you taking AP exams in December?

@SoBobolicious sorry not the actual AP test. It’s our midterm exams!

Vandy super scores right?

@Livingteen1209 only the SAT, not the ACT
