Official Vanderbilt University Fall 2012 Transfer Thread

I’m a freshman at NYU looking to transfer to Vanderbilt for next year.

Don’t know what my college GPA will be. Pretty good I assume-Over a 3.5
Do not need financial aid.

Highschool GPA was low: 3.45
SAT: 2020

Stats are on the lower end for Vanderbilt but I’m hoping applying as a transfer will make it a little easier.

Lots of EC’s. Applying as a communication major in Arts&Sciences.

Chances?

mgmt, just wanted to let you know that Vandy doesn’t accept the AP credit. It can be used for AXLE, though. For example, if you scored above a 4 (I believe) in a language, you placed out of a language. You don’t get the 3 credits, though.

Also, 430catt, I think to be safe, you should get your GPA up to a 3.6 ish.

@mgmt: strong as St. A is, why are you still looking into transferring? I think the fact that you’re in st. a pretty much tells that you’re academically qualified.

Hey guys,

I just recently have begun considering applying to Vanderbilt but I have no idea if I would even have a fighting chance, I mean it’s such a great school…

Right now :
I attend the University of Tennessee at Martin
59 hours not including in progress classes…
College GPA: 3.83 (not including in progress classes def. A’s-12hrs)
College achievements: Best undergraduate critical reaction essay on my philosophical writings of Aristotle and Socrates, and the only undergraduate in TN considered at state level for the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship
I work 30 hours a week

High school was eh…
GPA 3.43
ACT 26
And tons of clubs and leadership/public speaking awards

And I am a philosophy major hoping to pursue a PhD after undergraduate

Hopeless? Maybe?

cjevali: I didn’t really think of it that way I guess. But I can’t do the distance and they don’t offer Communications, which is what I hope to transfer into. So you’re saying you think I have a shot?

Transferring from Fordham

HS GPA: 91 UW
SAT: 2220 (1490 MR)
HS ECs: National leadership position in a debate organization, president of school debate club, vice president of Rotary chapter, involved in local Republican causes.

College GPA: Will be between 3.3 and 3.7
In Fordham’s Honors program (we also have grade deflation, not sure Vandy factors that in)
College ECs: President of my freshman class, member of the academic dean’s council, involved in conservative club and school newspaper.

Currently holding an internship at MetLife’s finance division, will be taking my Series 7 and 63 license exams soon.

Chances?

Public liberal arts university (small).
First semester, looking at 3.8-4.0 GPA.
Will have 32 credits by end of the year (out of HS, not including AP, etc.)
SAT-2000
HS GPA- 3.4/5, rigorous program, 11 APs, 2 college courses.
ECs: HS-Club president, lots of community service hours.
Currently in a very special internship, 15 hrs/week. Also member of 2 clubs. Continuing community service.

Is it worth applying?

I am currently a freshman at the University of Kentucky, but I hate it here and would really like to go to private university next year. I can’t concentrate, and it’s really making me mad. My parents made me go here because I pretty much received full tuition for one full year. By the way, my first semester GPA is just theoretical, so please keep that in mind…

Age: 18
Gender: Male
Year: Freshman
Location: Western Kentucky
Race: White/Caucasian
Religion: None
Other factors: First generation college student, lower-middle class

High School GPA (Unweighted): 3.93
High School GPA (Weighted): 4.6
AP Classes: 9
High school class rank: 9/220 (top 4%)
Other factors: Took all honors courses offered

Major: Economics (fulfilling requirements for pre-med)
Minors: Japanese Culture and Language; Statistics
Theoretical First Semester GPA: 3.7+
Credit hours fall semester 2011: 20
Credit hours spring semester 2012: 22
Credit hours by the end of summer 2012: 42
SAT: 2120 (M - 680, CR - 700, W - 740) / Retaking in Dec and Jan (shooting for 2200+)
Volunteer work since the 11th grade: 500 hours +
Extracurriculars: Alpha Phi Omega (service oriented fraternity), residence hall treasurer, Resident Student Association (RSA) campus-wide treasurer, on-campus job, Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center volunteer, environmental/poverty projects, Gay-Straight Alliance, Linguistics Club, undergraduate research project (spring 2012) - HIV/AIDS in cancer patients, internship in Alaska (summer 2012), Mexican orphanage volunteer (summer 2012), Fencing
Honors: Several since the 11th grade
Recommendations: I’ll have four recommendation letters, and they’ll be great since I’ve really taken the time to know my adviser and professors

Do I have a chance at Vandy?

Itransferred11, could you expand on this? So, if i have a 5 on BC calc, for example, I won’t get 3 credits toward my math requirement if I’m accepted and send along my AP scores?

If you received a 5 on BC Calc, you will get a Natural Science class towards AXLE, but you will not receive any college credits for it. The first day of orientation, we were told that transfer students cannot transfer in AP credits for actual credit. (Unless I’m being delusional). There’s even a limit for freshmen.

So, the AP counts towards general education requirements, but will not be included in your 120 required credits.

Ahhh, OK. I know there’s an 18 credit limit on APs, but that makes me feel better. Thanks!

I’m almost positive the 18 applies only to freshmen. I don’t think transfers get any.

Seriously… someone?

Glad this is already started for Vanderbilt, haha.

I’m applying CAS as a Gov/Poli Sci and Econ double major.

Stats:

Applying from a tier 2 state school, Honors College.

GPA: HS - 3.86UW / College - 3.78

Units: 27, plus either 12 or 15 in the spring.

Entering as a Sophomore

SAT: 1890
ACT: 30 (Willing to retake if there’s any reason that would help, but from what I understand after 30 hrs SAT/ACTs don’t really matter)

ECs:
lots of volunteer work
a summer internship,
co-captain of debate team for one semester,
vice pres of French club for two semesters,
I’m planning on getting involved in debate again, history club, and trying to get research positions in my major fields of interest (econ and gov).

Sport:
varsity baseball and basketball in HS
club lax and tennis in college.

"So, the AP counts towards general education requirements, but will not be included in your 120 required credits. "

Does anyone have a source on this, because I was planning on graduating at least a semester early.

I would call the office of the registrar. Sorry I can’t be of more help. I was dozing off during the first 30 minutes of our transfer orientation.

College
Transferring from: James Madison University (VA)
College GPA: 4.0 (I’ve only finished one semester here so far.)
Honors Program: No
Standardized Test Score(s): 30 ACT, 1960 SAT
ECs: Amnesty International, International Student Association, Gay-Straight Alliance, Bah

Hey everyone, I’m a 2010 transfer to Vandy and just stopping by to wish everyone good luck!

Good luck everyone! I transferred to Vandy this past fall–it is definitely a transfer-friendly school. You’ll definitely be so so much happier here–Vanderbilt’s amazing!
Message me if you have any specific questions, i’d be happy to answer them!

Hi guys  I’m applying too! I’m currently a sophomore at a large public university.

I had a question. Since Vanderbilt does not have a supplement, how are you guys planning to show your interest in the school? I’m applying to other schools, so I’m thinking about creating two accounts.

Also, are we allowed to send in additional recommendation?

Thank you all ^^
