Official visits for rowing

My son was told that he would be invited for an official visit by a coach and its been two weeks since we heard anything from him. We sent him emails and left messages. At what point do the OVs end for the year? Oct/Nov? or can they go thru next year up until May?

Also, if a Ivy coach decides not to recruit you but later on finds out that some of his top recruits have turned him down in November, that would mean he would go back to his list and start calling right? Just trying to get perspective as to when we will know that all opportunities for being recruited by top schools and ivies are gone and we have to resort to plan B.

Currently navigating this process as well, in a different sport. I’m no expert, but my impression is that most Ivy coaches want their recruiting wrapped up by the Nov 1 early decision deadline. One Ivy coach told us they sometimes save a couple slots for the RD round, but this does not seem to be typical.

OVs are usually taking place the first 3-4 weekends once school starts. And since likely letters can be issued starting Oct. 1, most coaches have their boat full by then. There’s always the chance that someone jumps ship, but it’s not that frequent. However, coaches will always look for a good rower, so even if you are waitlisted as a regular applicant, good racing results/erg times can tip in favor of admission as late as May. It may be nerveracking, but it’s good to keep in contact and update the coach.

Thanks beenthere2. I had a feeling the OVs are done by early october. So if you do not get invited for an OV then you can apply RD and cross your fingers! You never know.

I would think that the coach is waiting for other recruits to either decline or accept offers, so once those have been decided, then they will continue on the list. I wouldn’t give up hope at all, maybe after oct. 1st the coach will contact you back.
