Official Visits

S a swimmer and a rising senior and has received several recruitment letters during his junior year. He has emailed his favorite schools on a regular basis and several coaches watched him swim at Jr Nationals. He has done well in school and on the ACT and SAT II and his AI should be in a good range. Recently he has received requests for official transcripts, test scores, and his senior class schedule from several ivy coaches including his top choice. How soon after these are sent can we expect to hear if an official visit will be offered?
Thanks!!!

Usually once the phone conversations start, sometime after 7/1.

I believe OVs begin after the first day of classes of senior year.

Great post.

May I also ask when and in what form S can expect to hear what admissions response is to his grades, scores, etc.?

I don’t recall ever hearing specific feedback about what admissions thought of test scores and grades. The fact that the recruiting process continued indicated that they were satisfactory.

^^^^. You can ask for a more official “pre-read” when you are ready to hit the “send” button…after OVs. You will be offered a “LL” or not eventually, but not til Fall for the Ivies.

I am assuming that if a OV is offered the pre-read was acceptable

^Correct. They aren’t going to spend the time and money to bring you out if the grades/scores are a non-starter

What’s the protocol in sending scores/transcripts and accepting OVs? My D has more than 5 schools (the OV limit) asking for scores/transcripts and then to set up the OV. Once she sends them her numbers, do they assume she’s committing to the OV?

editor is correct-official visits cannot happen until after their first day of high school classes their senior year–so clear the fall schedule for those. They can not exceed 48 hours so flying out on a Thursday night, missing school Friday, returning home Saturday is a good option.

imafan–I would send the scores/transcripts to all of the schools she is considering. Yes, you can only do 5 official visits but they can come visit you as well and you can do as many unofficial visits as you want so depending on the schools and where you live, you may be able to combine an official visit with a couple unofficial visits.

imafan - Your D sending coaches the requested scores and transcripts is in no way committing her to an OV. In my opinion, it is just an expression of her and the coach’s interest in one another - no commitment though.

Should you send transcripts and scores to all schools you are interested in, or just after the coach expresses interest in you?

You should fill out the athletic questionnaire for all schools you are interested in, which usually asks for some academic detail. Beyond that, wait until asked. But if you are extremely strong academically, make sure you convey that in your emails and phone calls.
