I got in to economics with a 3.76 Cal Poly GPA, 1300 volunteer hours and 31 ACT. If I had to guess, Cal Poly might waitlist people who are “overqualified” because people who are above and beyond what the school can provide are more likely to transfer and lose Cal Poly money in the long run.

My S was waitlisted today for Kinesiology: 3.5 GPA from very rigorous So Cal public school, 2110 SAT, 32 ACT, tons of varsity athletic and music awards, leadership, etc.

Zeeb360; The number and nature of transfers out of CP would be an interesting thing to analyze. I would be willing to wager that the the numbers are very small for “overqualified” students but I’d like to find out. Wonder where you’d get such data.

waitlisted. gpa is 3.92 weighted, 3.7 or so not. 1310/1970 Sats. 2 years work experience. ecs. leadership.blah blah blah. weak

so anyone got the letter in the mail? it seems that i didn’t get an email…

I think they wait list some overqualified people because those people are probably going to end up at UCLA or UC Berkeley or some other top tier school. It’s a way to filter out those who really want to go to cal poly, and those that have it just as a back up. I don’t think it has anything to do with transferring out.

Daughter waitlisted in Psych. - 30 ACT, 3.7 unweighted GPA, 2 psych college courses, 4 APs this year (4.1 GPA 1st semester), 250+ comm. serv. hrs., leadership. Nothing received in the mail.

Does anyone remember how to calculate your “Cal Poly GPA”? I was looking around CP’s website for information regarding appeals and found this…

“Cal Poly does not have an appeal process for admission decisions as our selection process is completely objective, based on each applicant’s SELF-REPORTED ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS on the Application for Admission within the competitive nature of each applicant pool by major.”

When they say “self-reported”, do they literally mean they take each applicants word that their reported GPA/SAT is correct? I know we have to send our official SAT scores to CP, but they don’t receive OFFICIAL grades/transcripts until the end of the year IF an applicant is accepted. Anyway, I’ve seen a lot of people in the “accepted thread” posting their weighted GPA for their stats, and i’m going to be realllllly ****ed off if a bunch of people submitted their weighted GPA and got accepted. I mean, if the adcom DID calculate everyone’s GPA with their computers (and I’m assuming they could), they wouldn’t have everyone calculate it themselves and report it, would they?

None of my friends knew how to calculate their cal poly gpa when I asked them, and some of them ACTUALLY told me they put their WEIGHTED gpa. Although my weighted GPA is 4.0+, I got waitlisted with a 3.4 cal poly gpa and a 1380 SAT for business. Can anyone shed some light on the subject please?

I seem to remember a CSU/Cal Poly worksheet that we filled in my daughter’s grades for each of the classes on the worksheet, “a thru g” courses. some of the honors/AP classes received the extra point, some did not. Because they do take an extra point on SOME classes, I would say that it is a weighted GPA.

When I see the stats that people post her on CC, I think that perhaps some of the GPAs being listed here are from their own high school transcript. Every high school calculates their GPA differently. I am thinking that most people here do not necessarily remember their calculated Cal Poly/CSU GPA from the worksheet.

But, I would assume, and hope, that everyone calculates their GPA for all CSU applications with the CSU GPA worksheet. I would also think that Cal Poly calculates each applicants GPA themselves in the Admissions Office, just because there are so many different ways to calculate GPA, and innocent errors can be made.

So, basically take everyone’s GPA posted here with a grain of salt.

I am sure EVERY college re-calculates each applicant’s GPA so there is some standardization in the admission process. So, not to worry! I am sure you have not been wronged!

And, if anyone does lie, their admission will be rescinded once the final transcript from the high school arrives.

BayAreaCAMom is correct, EVERY college re-calculates GPA. In the case of CalPoly, they’ll re-calculate using your 9th~11th grades while on the application you self-report using 10th~11th. Both are weighted GPA.

My child also received acceptance from private college that DOES required transcript during application, then the acceptance does NOT come with any condition as long as the student graduate. In the case of UC and CSU, we’ve noticed every acceptance is conditional. They all give that big warning if they find the information is different with final transcript, they can rescind the offer.

thank you both for clearing that up. Watermark, you said both GPAs are weighted. If this is the case, and I somehow miscalculated my GPA so it is significantly lower than it should be, would there be any hope in contacting CP about it? When I applied, My unweighted GPA was 3.4 ish and my weighted was 4.0ish. I really don’t remember how to calculate the cal poly gpa, but i remember entering it as around 3.4ish. Is this even possible? I understand they only take the “a thru g” courses but I still think it should be a bit higher. What do you guys think?

A procrastinator, as i recall, you enter your unweighted gpa and indicate whether it was in a course that is honors or ap. Cal poly calculates your grade. And its true, you can lie about your grade or put your weighted grade in , but if you get accepted, they ask for your transcript, and if you lied, they rescind their offer. You are right, alot of people have superinflated grades and mediocre SAT’s. I think college admissions can see thru that.

Count on it.

wait listed in civil engineering
gpa 3.9w
SAT 1390/2100

sigh your guy’s GPA are like so much better than mine and yet ur waitlisted >.<. I havent heard back, but I’m nervous. Hopefully my SAT screams to them accept me :D

A_Procrastinator, most important thing is - enter your grade correctly and mark honor/AP correctly. College knows student could mis-calculate the GPA, that’s why they do re-calculate. My best GUESS for the reason they still ask for the self-report GPA is to easily reject those really low GPA. CSUs do receive many application. IF I were Adcom, I would do this to save the time since no need to enter grades for re-calculation for the easy rejects.

Since you’re waitlisted, your GPA should have been re-calculated in the CalPoly way. But if you’re really interested to know your weighted GPA, go back to CSUmentor, the GPA calculator should still be there. Just search it using keyword.

Found the link for the GPA calcultor. [CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

Waitlisted for Mechanical Engineering

Just got waitlisted. I applied for aerospace as a transfer. 3.45 gpa with all required/recommended courses. Does anyone have any info or stats on how many waitlisted students usually get accepted?

I was also waitlisted! I want the letter already. I think my grades are decent… I got an 1870 on my SAT and have a 3.6 unweighted GPA… and I’m editor-in-chief of my school’s newspaper with 170+ community service hours…

oh well… i guess it’s nice to know i’m not the only one suffering.
