What would really be nice is if someone from CPSLO would clearly explain what being waitlisted really means. I understand that this is the first year that Cal States are doing this, but are people just supposed to move on or is there some way of determining the likelihood of any movement/possibility of acceptance. For example, how does CPSLO know if someone they accepted decided to SIR somewhere else (and therefore create a spot for someone on the waitlist)? And what about the timing of all this? If acceptance status doesn’t change before mid-April, we obviously have to decide on other options before May 1.

^Yes, thats exactly it, we have to wait until May 1-15th before we find out about our waitlisted condition, since Cal Poly needs to see if they have enough space, after everyone else makes their decision. Since we dont know if we will be accepted by CP, we SIR to another college. After waitlist decisions come out, we make our decision. If you accept at Cal Poly from being waitlisted, youre going to have to give up the deposit that you made at your other college.

I don’t know about other colleges, but at Cal Poly (and I would assume the rest of the CSU’s) there is no fee associated with a SIR.

This is exactly what a friend of mine’s daughter had to do several years ago when she was on the waitlist for a small, liberal arts school, Carleton College. But, it all ended up fine in the end. But, she was on pins and needles until then! I think her dad told me that there was some fee involved at the school she committed to before finally getting accepted to Carleton. I’m not sure, though.

“You have been placed on the waitlist at Cal Poly for Fall. You will be receiving a letter with more information very shortly.”

Anyone get this letter yet? If so please post contents lol

I wish they would sent the letter on why and what to do next…

I was wait listed also… poli-sci major all pre reqs done 3.65 gpa. I dont know if it helps me or not but i emailed the head wrestling coach because if i get in i will be a walk on athlete. I really hope they wait listed me because they wanted to see my fall 09 grades. I took 23 units last semester maybe they want to see how i did before they decide. what u guys think…

Just checked and I also join everyone else here on the wait list.
3.3 GPA Transfer which appears to be low compared to everyone else. Hope they notice it was my Philosophy and Environmental Science classes which killed it and not my Engineering, Math, or Physics.
Going for Aerospace Engineering with all required/recommended/GE classes done or in progress (that my school offers anyway)

On a side note, I recommend anyone taking Environmental Science to find out just a little about the class, or you might get a teacher like mine…a literal ‘take down the establishment’ type of guy.

Waitlist Stats

Major: Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 3.92 (one B in Calc)
Completed all required and recommended coursework
SAT 2200 (although they don’t look at that)
Averaged 12 hours of work per week as well as extra curiculars

It seems ridiculous that I didn’t get in. I could have easily got into Cal Poly SLO out of high school and many of the people that I know that go there now had considerablely lower GPAs and took fewer Honors/AP courses in High Schoool. If I didn’t get into Cal Poly, which is my local CSU, what chance do I have of getting into UCLA, UCB, or UCSD? Where am I supposed to go? I was in the top on my High School class as well as in CC, where is everyone else supposed to go? Just seems ridiculous.

SBstudent: is ur gpa weighted? or unweighted? i mean the one u gave.
and what is ur critical reading and math sat score. also, how many hours did you put down for extra curriculars? and what ap classes did you take?

im kinda just wondering, its ok if u dont want to respond.

i got in for ME but i think thats only bc i did early decision, if i had not i probably would have been denied.

To everyone who has been waitlisted:

Are you planning to just…wait until May when Cal Poly figures out what to do with us? Are you going to wait or are you going to decide on another college and take Cal Poly off your list?

Hey jsturavgazn,

Here are my full Stats. I am transfering from SBCC so Cal Poly only really looks at the classes I’ve taken and GPA.

-National Honors Society
-Varsity Water Polo and Swimming (Captain)

SBCC: GPA 3.9(only B was in Calc) unwieghted
Mechanical Engineering Major (average around 19 units per semester)

For EC I put down 11-15 hours

-Seasonal California State Parks Ocean Lifeguard (3 years; Awards: Rookie of the Year 07, Most Improved Lifeguard 08)
-Internship at engineering firm working on sustainable energy storage
-Student Leaders in Science club: Vice President of Mechanical Engineering

Has anyone received a letter yet???
If so, what does it say??

SBstudent: wow im shocked! it seems like ud be perfect to get in. i cant understand why you didnt get it. u have every qualification!

Word. Like I said, it’s ridiculous. Guess I’ll just wait and see what happens. Hopefully I slide in or I get accepted to one of the UCs I applied to.

SBstudent: well since u went to SBCC i think you get guranteed transfer to UCSB right?

My son is wait-listed to SLO as an incoming Freshman in General Engineering (GPA 3.93). I have spoken to two admissions counselors there and was told that they received a record 41,000 applications this year (up from 33,000 last year), and that they simply don’t have room for all the qualified applicants. They are being advised to tell wait-listed students to “pursue other options”. They cannot say how many students are on the wait list in any particular Major, but I was told that budget cuts and reduced funding have led to many impacted Majors this year, so the odds of getting in are greatly reduced by that alone.

are you serious -___-

no matter how much I don’t want to hear it, it is good information, thanks for telling us.

Sounds like Cal Poly will not be taking many from their wait list? Has anyone gotten “the letter” saying what the wait list is all about?

I didnt get it yet, they might send it after all the decisions come out.
