Strengths: SAT IIs, ECs
Weaknesses: Essays weren’t amazing. No legacy.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Any of a million reasons.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Still waiting on all my other schools.

Decision: Accepted (School of Engineering [Bioengineering])

Ok so there’s alot of people on here who got rejected putting things like “AMAZING EC’s, AWESOME letters, FANTASTIC essays.” Obviously we know these people are bs’ing, so I’m gonna try to be as real as possible with this, because I know that’s helpful.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send this score
[] ACT: 36 (36 english, reading, science, math)
[] SAT II: math level 2: 800, biology M: 790
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): My school goes on a 5.0 scale with honors classes. I got straight A’s in high school and had about the same number of pluses and minuses. So I’ll say about 4.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5’s on bio, eng, micro, gov, 4 on us history
[] Senior Year Course Load: Pretty tough. Took AP chem and AP physics, BC calc, ap English. Luckily most of these classes look hard, but they’re senior blowoff classes at my school, so I aced them for the midyear report. OK not blowoff, but its easy to get by with minimal work.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMS finalist
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): NHS (President, I started some stuff through this position), V Tennis and XC, Mathletes-made state a couple times, Scholastic Bowl (captain), uhh yeah thats about it
[] Job/Work Experience: Did a volunteer research assistantship in a medical lab this summer. Got a coauthorship on a paper through it.
[] Volunteer/Community service:~100 hours through a local organization of which I’m a boardmember
[] Summer Activities: playing video games and watching cartoons
[] Essays: Honestly pretty average. I tried to make the main essay on the commonapp kind of funny. I guess it worked.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Decent. Both were very positive, of course, but neither was very specific and spoke mainly in generalities.
[] Counselor Rec: She likes me alot so she wrote a good letter. I always tried to take the toughest classes I could.
[] Additional Rec: From my research advisor. This one had alot of specifics and was really positive. Showed me as creative and ambitious.
[] Interview: Had the on campus one with a current student. It was pretty chill but because of time constraints we could only talk for 15 minutes. Luckily I managed not to be awkward for that period of time.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Illinois (Chicago)
[] School Type: Public, about 650 kids in my class
[] Ethnicity: Indian (So Asian I guess)
[] Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket:150-200k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Having an actual personality in my writing, some good EC stuff and awards, mainly demonstrated interest. Scores and grades pretty good too.
[] Weaknesses: Weakish essays, bland teacher reccomendations
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really have no idea.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Engineering at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign[/li] [/ul]General Comments:
Yeah, so you should definitely demonstrate interest. Making the trip down to St. Louis to get a student interview and see the campus really makes a difference. Axe me any questions you want.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I didn’t visit or get an interview, and WashU seems to place these things in high regard. Overall, I’m not really shocked, though I did hope things would swing my way.

Reflection

 • Strengths: Hmm… great question. Decent essay & good grades. (artsy?)
 • Weaknesses: Terribly mediocre test scores, no stellar awards or distinctions. Undecided.
 • Why you think you were waitlisted: Meh. And I’m basically competing in a pool of other asians, the many with perfect test scores, state and national recognitions, ect. I developed more holistically in high school than anything. I think that’s what tipped the balance between waitlisted and rejected. (not that it counts for much)

Plus I didn’t demonstrate any interest save the actual process of applying.

General Comments:
Well… it’s been a ride. A bad one. And my fault. I do EVERYTHING last minute, and I think I haven’t learned my lesson. Ironically, I was accepted to the (fairly decent) university in my town before I applied anywhere else. So I was just throwing money left and right during my application process, wondering if it was a waste or not. Words of wisdom: don’t do stupid. Also ignore everything I say. I’m in one of those moods, you know?
