Official Wednesday PSAT Discussion

bump - where are you jrcho?:)

AlexMartin Re: Question 21.

Just wondering why you think the author of passage 2 would react to Koestler's assessment with "general agreement?"

The author of passage 1 cites Koestler in support of the argument, "Orthodox science is making such colossal strides . . . that no one should hesitate to accept the reality of psi." I do not see where the author of passage 2 encourages anyone to accept this argument or to accept the reality of psi.

serendipitous and alexmartin: yeah, that was kind of my point: there did not seem to be any agreement between the two authors because they were representing two different viewpoints

also: does anyone know if for the state of NY the national merit scholarship semi-finalist cut-off is 218 right? And, it is not different for NYC, right?

As for me,

B

A

D

B

E

D

E

B

D

C

B

C

I'm fairly certain about 24, and more sure than not for 23. Remember that the author notes "two millenia of evidence." And, saying that "standards ... see primative" hurts the argument a little (though I realize this position could be stated backed up with the author's last paragraph).

The author of passage 1 comes off more as an observing scientist than a reporter, which is why I put B for 23.

sorry guys.... I'm having some trouble right now... it's a long story... I'm kind of depressed, but i think im ok now

As far as scanning goes, I'll start scanning em, now that the Saturday people don't have much time to go over it.

no need to be sorry, man... you didn't have to do all this for us

Me

13) B
14) B (I know this is wrong)
15) D
16) B
17) E
18) D
19) E
20) B
21) E <----Not only do the other answers not make sense, but the author of passage 2 thought fondly of parapsychology just like the author described in passage 1. The author OF passage 1 does not agree with the author CITED in the passage!!!
22) C
23) E
24) C

For that one question on the population of New York on the Writing Section, did anyone else pick choice B or something that went along the lines of "its population is greater than any other city's." ?

I will keep this thread alive! This is far too damn important compared to crap like 8pi or 15pi. I don't care if I have to keep posting by myself.

AlexMartin, yeah, I didn't notice that the question referred to Koestler, not the author of passage 1.

I think the answer to the question about New York was at the end of the sentence (D) because it said something along the lines of: "Tokyo's population is the highest in the world, except for New York." and the error was that it should have been "..for New York's (population)."

oh, now i remember, it was "for that of" New York

Writing
33.
He was A(somewhat) uncertain about B(how to use) the new machine and C(asked for) D(more specific) instructions be sent.

I can't remember what I put, but I think I put either B or C

I think it was C because it should have said "asked that" instead of "asked for"

yea thts right... its c

no, definitely not, its A, A is a double negative, although not stated explicitly

actually, i may have read it too fast

EDIT nevermind im an idiot

??????????????

sorry... i posted that i thought it was no error, and then realized that i think the answer is c and that i think i put c on the test.

The end of the sentence sounds completely wrong: He asked for more specific instructions be sent. I think they put the "somewhat uncertain" at the beginning of the sentence to get people to think that's the answer and make them not see the blatant error at the end of the sentence
