Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown):N/A
[] ACT:34 (36 English, 33 Math, 36 Reading, 31 sci)
[] SAT II: 720 Lit, 700 MathII
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A. School does not rank or grade.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):History 3, Lit 3. Both self-studies junior year, school does not offer AP courses
[] Senior Year Course Load: Calc, Physics, English 12, French V, Advanced Art
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nope.
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Skiing, 6 years. Classical Violin study, 12 years. Studio art (submitted supplement). Unpaid intern, local news publication. Peer mentor. Student teacher. Volunteer at local health club, teaching a young children’s fitness and nutrition class… sorry, I don’t feel like going into specifics about all of that
[] Job/Work Experience: Summer job, past 2 summers, around 20 hours/week. Used the money to pay for a french tutor over the summer.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of trail crew work in the summer/fall each year, fitness class volunteer, student mentor and student teacher. Volunteer at local food shelf (summer only)
[] Summer Activities: Ski training, huuuge time commitment. Plus summer job, food shelf volunteer. Lots of reading and violin practice!
[] Essays: I tried to make my Window supplement funny, which was probably a mistake. My main essay was much more serious, about why I chose to move across the country and live away from my family. My supplement was about window shopping.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I don’t know. I heard they were very strong, and i had a great relationship with both teachers, but who knows.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor was my advisor in HS, and we were pretty close. She knows a lot about the personal stuff I’ve been through, and I assume it was heartfelt.
[] Additional Rec: I’ll probably send one in from the editor of the publication I’ve been writing for. I don’t feel like I did a good job describing the professionalism of the organization, and the level of commitment that I have.
[] Interview: I talked to the dean of admissions somewhat casually a few years ago. I really hope they didn’t take that conversation into consideration… I was really flustered, and I think I said “Ummm…” way to much, haha
[/ul][ b]Other
[li] State (if domestic applicant): Vermont (currently living in Oregon)[/li][] School Type: Private Boarding
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: Lower middle class. Not sure exactly, but a good amount of finaid needed.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nada. Not even skiing, as I’ve been injured and unable to compete for the past year.
Reflection
[] Strengths: Independence, Interesting personal story?
[] Weaknesses: Weak high school curriculum, no GPA or rank, SATII scores.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because purple looks really bad on me, and cows smell bad.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m taking a Gap Year, and I’ve deferred admission from St. Lawrence. I’m planning to apply to Dartmouth, Bates, Colby, Midd, and maybe Whitman and Denver RD.
General Comments: Congrats to the accepted, best of luck to anyone else who’s deferred. I’m sure we’re all riding the same emotional roller coaster right now… but if there’s anything I’ve learned from my gap year so far, it’s that a name-brand education isn’t everything. Seriously, look up a post I wrote on the “Admission Hindsight and Lessons Learned” page. I’m sure this will all work out for us in the end!

@carolineeleanor: go VERMONT! our stats and school list look pretty similar… weird. Where you at?
