Don't worry I copy pasted from another site but we should keep the thread lively and long...!
Any comments?

My son applied ED, thought the releasing time is 8pm EST tomorrow night(12/15, Thursday).
With bad economy, do you think the amount of applicants for top LACs would decrease?
Good luck, everyone!

It sounds like a good idea but I’m not sure I understand the list?

should we start filling out the list now… or after we hear our answer?

It’s a nice idea to help others see how they measure up, but to be honest, I think the results will end up being a bit skewed because of self-reporting. If someone’s been deferred/rejected then they’re not going to want to fill out a whole bunch of information about why they might not have gotten in. They’ll be too busy crying over ice cream (I know I will.)

@TKD789. The outline will look like this:
Choose One:

General Comments:

@carolineeleanor: I bet we should fill it after the results are out…since we have no clue of our status now.
@noisyimpatntspdr: Yeah, I agree with you that this thread will help lots of people and also that rejected or deferred applicants will not wish to post their status. But it is nice giving it a shot!
@mentalgarderner: I am not sure of the answer to that question. I wish your son and the rest of the applicants success…

Essays: Beautiful. I wrote my Common App essay about Thomas Merton’s Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander and my faith (which was a little bit dangerous, yes, but if they had rejected me because of that I wouldn’t have wanted to go there.)

Teacher Recommendation: Junior-year English teacher and junior-year history teacher. Both really good writers, and I had a great relationship with both of them.

Counselor Rec: My counselor is quite possibly the sweetest person on the face of the planet, so it was probably glowing.

Additional Rec: n/a

Weaknesses: SAT II (especially that German score!) and my extracurriculars (I have a bunch, but it reads like a laundry list, because I have so many interests.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: College of Charleston (accepted)

Summer Activities: Rustic all-girl wilderness camp in Ontario. No electricity, no showers, no covered buildings. Only canoeing! Love it!! (9 years)

Essays: I wrote mine on a combination of my belief in doing the right thing and coping with my parents recent divorce.

Teacher Recommendation: My school is so small that I was really close with the teachers who wrote them, so I got pretty lucky. Rec #1- Junior history teacher and advisor for 3 years. Rec #2- French teacher for 4 years, I have been close with her since 7th. Rec #3- English teacher 9th and 10th grade and theatre director. I have a really close relationship with him.

Counselor Rec: My school is so small that my guidance counselor knows every senior very well, so I am sure it was great. I also babysit her children all the time.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): Vermont

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Independent (which means you have to apply to get in, but if your town does not have a public high school, as many VT towns don’t, you can go for free.

Income Bracket: $200 k/yr

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy (my momma went to williams)

Reflection

Strengths: Character

Weaknesses: SAT scores (but those really are a good projection anyway)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my school is a very interesting school that does a lot of which Williams also does. Also I have done some pretty interesting things I suppose (year abroad in India Himalayas, wilderness experience) and my mom went to Williams

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was planning on applying to Bates, Middlebury (where my sister goes) Hampshire, Wellesley, Whitman, Kenyon and St. Lawrence

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown):N/A
[] ACT:34 (36 English, 33 Math, 36 Reading, 31 sci)
[] SAT II: 720 Lit, 700 MathII
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A. School does not rank or grade.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis):History 3, Lit 3. Both self-studies junior year, school does not offer AP courses
[] Senior Year Course Load: Calc, Physics, English 12, French V, Advanced Art
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nope.
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Skiing, 6 years. Classical Violin study, 12 years. Studio art (submitted supplement). Unpaid intern, local news publication. Peer mentor. Student teacher. Volunteer at local health club, teaching a young children’s fitness and nutrition class… sorry, I don’t feel like going into specifics about all of that
[] Job/Work Experience: Summer job, past 2 summers, around 20 hours/week. Used the money to pay for a french tutor over the summer.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Lots of trail crew work in the summer/fall each year, fitness class volunteer, student mentor and student teacher. Volunteer at local food shelf (summer only)
[] Summer Activities: Ski training, huuuge time commitment. Plus summer job, food shelf volunteer. Lots of reading and violin practice!
[] Essays: I tried to make my Window supplement funny, which was probably a mistake. My main essay was much more serious, about why I chose to move across the country and live away from my family. My supplement was about window shopping.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I don’t know. I heard they were very strong, and i had a great relationship with both teachers, but who knows.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor was my advisor in HS, and we were pretty close. She knows a lot about the personal stuff I’ve been through, and I assume it was heartfelt.
[] Additional Rec: I’ll probably send one in from the editor of the publication I’ve been writing for. I don’t feel like I did a good job describing the professionalism of the organization, and the level of commitment that I have.
[] Interview: I talked to the dean of admissions somewhat casually a few years ago. I really hope they didn’t take that conversation into consideration… I was really flustered, and I think I said “Ummm…” way to much, haha
[/ul][ b]Other

[li] State (if domestic applicant): Vermont (currently living in Oregon)[/li][] School Type: Private Boarding
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: Lower middle class. Not sure exactly, but a good amount of finaid needed.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nada. Not even skiing, as I’ve been injured and unable to compete for the past year.
Reflection
[] Strengths: Independence, Interesting personal story?
[] Weaknesses: Weak high school curriculum, no GPA or rank, SATII scores.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because purple looks really bad on me, and cows smell bad.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m taking a Gap Year, and I’ve deferred admission from St. Lawrence. I’m planning to apply to Dartmouth, Bates, Colby, Midd, and maybe Whitman and Denver RD.
General Comments: Congrats to the accepted, best of luck to anyone else who’s deferred. I’m sure we’re all riding the same emotional roller coaster right now… but if there’s anything I’ve learned from my gap year so far, it’s that a name-brand education isn’t everything. Seriously, look up a post I wrote on the “Admission Hindsight and Lessons Learned” page. I’m sure this will all work out for us in the end!

@carolineeleanor: go VERMONT! our stats and school list look pretty similar… weird. Where you at?

skiguurl21- I go to the Sharon Academy in Sharon (its kind of near the hanover and woodstock area). you?

[] Job/Work Experience: Outside Service Rep at a Golf Course (6/2010-8/2011), Recreational Aide at the First Tee (8/2011-present)
[] Volunteer/Community service: First Tee (2008-8/2011)
[] Summer Activities: Golf, golf and more golf. I play golf competitively and when I’m not working, I’m practicing or playing in tournaments.
[] Essays: I felt my essays were pretty good, my English teacher (who’s known for being quite harsh on essays) really enjoyed my common app essay and my supplement.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I felt these were pretty good as well, as I had a really close relationship with the two teachers I asked. One of them even offered to write more recs for me for scholarships
[] Counselor Rec: This is a little shaky, as my old counselor left at the beginning of the school year, and I got a completely new counselor who didn’t know me at all. This wasn’t as bad as it seems, as my old counselor was pretty clueless (he didn’t know our school had an AP Computer Science class when I was signing up junior year) and my new counselor really knew what she was doing. So this would be a push in terms of helping my application.

[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Academics, Extracurriculars, Athlete
[] Weaknesses: Community Service?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my strong academic and extracurricular record in combination with the fact that I’ll be playing a varsity sport there got me in.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: This is the only school I applied to, no need to submit backup apps now!

General Comments:
I’m so excited, these past few days have been unreal. I received my aid package yesterday and my family can definitely afford it, so I’m off to the college of my dreams. Still hasn’t really sunk in quite yet…

I was flat out rejected. I have the same scores as the first person from Albania. While my scores were on the lower end, I am in the top 10% of my class. I think with the racial issues going on on campus they were going for a huge diversity pull here. A white female from NJ just wasn’t what they were looking for. Congratulations to all those accepted! Enjoy the next four years!

@wtcgshep Sorry that you didn’t get in. However, it’s not fair to say that someone else got in only because of a “diversity pull.” It sounds like you’re diminishing their accomplishment. I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way, but it sounds a little bitter.

“American students of color comprise 23 percent of the group, including 19 African Americans, 17 Latinos, 16 Asian Americans and 2 Native Americans.”

Not exactly a “huge diversity pull.”

[] Teacher Recommendation: Chemistry teacher: DEFINITELY really good  I had her for two years and bonded with her a lot. English teacher: ehhh… probably good, but not sure! We had a good relationship but it was nowhere as good as my chemistry teacher’s for sure.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college student, very low income family (not sure if that’s a hook though!)
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Chemistry teacher recommendation, showed a strong love & interest for science (5 on AP chemistry exam, 800 on chemistry SAT II subject test, placed in top 15% of the state for science league, attended the New Jersey Governor’s School in the Sciences, etc), essays, class rank
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores for sure (that critical reading haunted me :), no work experience or major awards, not many AP classes throughout high school
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It was probably a mix of my love for science and my love for running, along with my ECs (showed well-roundness), plus I have a strong academic background.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no where!
[/ul]General Comments:
I can’t believe I got in! It was definitely a great surprise for me. Can’t wait to meet everyone and become a PURPLE COW!! Good luck to anyone who got deferred/rejected, and always stay positive!

Everyone, accepted or otherwise, keep in mind that these scores are just numbers. We don’t get to read the essays people sent in, which are really the determining factor. A good essay can boost mediocre (for Williams, anyway) scores, and a bad (or just empty) essay can torpedo an otherwise perfect application. I’ve seen it happen.
Of course, it’s a lot easier for me to say that when I’m not angry and disappointed. Best of luck to all, though.
