Decision: Accepted

Objective:
-SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (CR: 730, M: 770, W: 800, E: 11)
-ACT: 35
-SAT II: 800 Math II, 770 Chem, 770 Bio (M)
-Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.83 (at a public magnet high school; strong upward trend with 4.0 junior year)
-Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
-AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Calc BC, 5 Chinese Lang + Culture, 4 Music Theory, 4 Biology
-IB (place score in parenthesis):
-Senior Year Course Load: Multivariable Calculus, Neuroscience, AP Biology, Advanced Problems in Music Theory, World Literature II
-Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): USABO Semifinalist; U of Toronto National Biology Competition Top Biology Scholar (T-250 Internationally); Crescendo International Piano Competition 1st Place Honor; Goldenkey International Music Festival 1-time Gold Winner, 1-time Silver Winner; NJMEA Annual Music Competition 2-time 2nd Place, 1-time 3rd Place, 1-time Honorable Mention, NJMTA Annual Music Auditions 5-year Winner’s Trophy
Subjective:
-Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Frisbee Club (Founder, President), Piano, JSA Member (1-time Best Speaker Award), Chamber Music Trio Pianist, Skiing (unfortunately it isn’t offered at my school, me being from Jersey), Columbia Science Honors Program
-Job/Work Experience: Piano Tutoring, Internship @ Hospital’s Emergency Room
-Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hours at local hospital (this does not include the aforementioned internship)
-Summer Activities: Summer@USC where I took the course “BodyWorks: Human Physiology”; UPenn’s Biomedical Research Academy
-Essays: Common app took the prompt about “describe a story central to your identity”, and described my deep, effervescent interest in medicine and my dreams of one day becoming a doctor. It’s pretty decent, but I truthfully don’t think it’s particularly amazing. My supplement discussed skiing and then drew parallels from the difficulties of skiing into the difficulties I experienced in high school life. This essay I am extremely proud of writing, and if my teachers/peers reactions were any indication, it was a very well written piece.
-Teacher Recommendation: One was from my AP Calc BC teacher, which I know was very excellent because we had a great relationship and I went from a solid B student to averaging out as a A by the end of the year. The other was from my US History teacher, and I don’t think it was as emphatic as my math teacher’s but I still believe it was quite good. I did participate quite often in her class and I believe she did enjoy having me too.
-Counselor Rec: Honestly, can’t say much about this one. I assume that she uses some sort of outline for all her students, and fills in the blanks from there. Regardless, me and her have had nice conversations and at least I know she wrote nothing bad about me.
-Additional Rec: N/a
-Interview: N/a, Williams doesn’t offer.
Other
-State (if domestic applicant): NJ
-Country (if international applicant):
-School Type: Public Magnet High school
-Ethnicity: Asian
-Gender: M
-Income Bracket: >$300,000
-Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Definitely not. My parents are quite wealthy and I don’t think being Asian serves much help.
Reflection
-Strengths: Test scores, piano, and awards coming from piano
-Weaknesses: My gpa. I truly thought I would’ve been rejected just because of that.
-Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, I think my intense interest in music and my ensuing music resume, music portfolio, and music CD carried me throughout this process. If you ask me, if I didn’t have these things, I probably would’ve been outright rejected.
-Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Well I applied to UC’s, haven’t gotten that back yet.
General Comments: can’t wait to go to college with thang1!!!

Essays: Good. Got over 20 people to read them, pretty much everyone loved them. They were slightly “risky,” as one dealt specifically with how my religion has been a catalyst during hard times, but I think it was worth the risk, because otherwise my story would have lacked depth.
Teacher Recommendation: One was almost gushy (my lit teacher who loved me), other was very straightfoward but painted my passion for music, etc.
Counselor Rec: n/a
Additional Rec: none

Weaknesses: test scores
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Really don’t know? So glad it’s holistic though…

Essays: Good - had my sister look over it for me. Subject: Rowing. I did it to stand out I did the second prompt because it really represented my sentiments in relationships to academics and life in general.
Teacher Recommendation: I had the head of the english department who knows me very well, and my old history teacher write me recommendations. The english head one was fantastic, the history one was eh
Counselor Rec: idk

Interview:
Other
State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Charter
Ethnicity: half black/half white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: low
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): minority, i guess; does rowing in low-income urban environment count? other things may have counted as hooks as well, but not that I’m aware of.
Reflection
Strengths: My essays and recommendations were definitely the strongest points of my application. They showed that I am more than my stats let on.
Weaknesses: Scores. Frankly, I feel that I had really low SAT scores and a low GPA which I thought would have counted against me.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because the Admissions committee thought that I would be a good addition to the school (?)
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
General Comments:

Looking at everyone else’s stats, mine seem so inadequate, lol. I was really surprised that I actually got in. I was playing it down subconsciously so that I wouldn’t be disappointed. I actually submitted all of my transcripts to other schools two days before I found out and even sent out another app that day! Now I’ve got to retract everything, though…

I’ve wanted to go to Williams since I was about 8, o this is really a dream come true. :)

Income Bracket: did not apply for FA
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): athlete
Reflection
Strengths: athlete, coming from good school, interest in Williams, very good visit
Weaknesses: white male, well-represented state
Why you think you were accepted: Williams had faith in me. Hope to return the faith.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere. Williams is my ED one and done.
General Comments: I am still pinching myself that this is real. Best part is watching my parents. They don’t want to say too much but it makes me so happy to see them happy. I know they would have been right there if I needed to get on other apps before Jan. 1.

Also the admissions folder came today in regular mail. Really good folder cover, it’s a bunch of students holding signs that say “Congrats … You … Got … IN … ! … HIGH FIVE” and lots of stuff inside including a car sticker.

Decision: Accepted

[]Teacher Recommendation: Excellent. Both my teachers adored me and considered me one of the most remarkable students they’ve ever had. It helps that I am personal friends with both of them.
[]Counselor Rec: Pretty good. I caught the head counselor’s attention with my National Achievement Scholarship essay, and ever since then, she has had very high hopes for me.

[ul]
[]Strengths: Teacher Recommendations; SAT Score made up for my grades; Extracurriculars/Awards; Essays
[]Weaknesses: Mediocre GPA
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The admission directors contacted my teachers about my poor GPA, but they vouched in my defense. Without them, and the W.O.W. fly-in program I participated in, I would have never made it in.

[/ul]

General Comments: I am incredibly thankful for the wonderful support I received during the stressful application process. I loved Williams when I traveled to the college, and my acceptance feels reminiscent of a fiction story. The purple cow was with me, after all :)!
