-Major Strength/Weakness: strength and passion for Math, relatively well rounded/academic failure freshman year, no real big awards in mathematics

-Going to attend?: i will almost certainly stay on the waitlist

OTHER FACTORS

-Senior Year Coursework: AP Physics C E&M and Classical Mechanics, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Geometry, Discrete Mathematics, Chinese, AP English, AP Gov and Politics

Decision:ACCEPTED

STATS:

-SAT 800CR/800M/740W
-SAT IIs: 750 Chem/800 Bio(molecular)/800 Math II/800 Chinese w/ Listening/720 Lit
-ACT N/A
-GPA 4.0
-Rank: doesn’t rank. but probably 2/~300
-Other stats: A in Multivariable Calculus at university; taking two other college classes; AP Scholar w/ Honor; National Merit Finalist

SUBJECTIVE

-Essays: got at least two people to edit each. Liked commonapp (nerdy, quirky), loved my Williams supp (atmospheric, creative, pretty sweet, 200 words)
-Teacher Recs: didn’t read, but I pretty much lived in the classroom of one of my recommenders after school for help, checking hw…etc.
-Counselor Rec: didn’t read, but probably one of those “best kid in several years” kind of thing judging from our conversations…
-Hook (if any): as un-hooky as one can get

LOCATION/PERSON

-State or Country: MA
-School Type: public
-Ethnicity: Asian (Chi)
-Gender: F
-Major Strength/Weakness: probably supplement, stats, GPA, female good at math, wanting to go into hard science?; weak: un-hooked-ness, kind of “typical” applicant - no WOW factor
-Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: maybe my supplement did it
-Going to attend?: still weighing my options and 4/1, but it’s looking more and more appealing!

OTHER FACTORS

-Extra-curriculars: math team captain, ranked 1st in my region’s math league, several math awards/honors involving well-known competitions like Olympiad, AMC…; year-long internship in university biochemistry lab, worked 40h/wk during summer, 10 during SY (got prof to write a rec; said to write “very good” recs); JETS TEAMS engineering team placed 1st in state, 5th in nation; piano: 2nd place @ Young Artist Piano Competition, Grade 8 with Merit on ABRSM graded piano exam, hold local public recitals solo and w/ chamber trio, volunteer piano accompanist for church; Co-director of student-run organization (which only has two people as of now :), which collects and exhibits drawings of disadvantaged children around the world. Fundraise to publish collection internationally and donate proceeds to organizations promoting peace; school medical club, which fundraises for non-profit health organizations and runs free health clinic for uninsured locals; job since 7th grade = shelver at library; volunteer teacher at elementary school; National Honor Society community service projects
-Comments: After dismal results at some of my other schools, this cheered me up considerably  I know Williams might be a top choice for some of you, and some of you will hear/heard bad news. I know what it’s like to be rejected AND waitlisted at two of your favorite schools. But please don’t wallow and reach out to other schools lower down on your list - you just might be surprised. Williams certainly wasn’t my top choice when I applied, but it may be getting there! I’m uber excited to visit there now!
I’m sorry, this section was supposed to be brief… I digress. The only thing I can say is BEST OF LUCK to all of you and keep the big picture in mind :)

Deferred -> Waitlisted
STATS:

-SAT: 1580/1600, 2300/2400
-SAT IIs: 800, 750, 740
-ACT: N/A
-GPA: 3.65, downward trend
-Rank: Third decile, not reported
-Other stats: One 5, three 4’s

SUBJECTIVE

-Essays: Pretty good
-Teacher Recs: One good, one fantastic
-Counselor Rec: Good
-Hook (if any): Nope

LOCATION/PERSON

-State or Country: Minnesota
-School Type: Private
-Ethnicity: White
-Gender: Male
-Major Strength/Weakness: Strengths: Test scores, recommendation. Weaknesses: GPA, EC’s
-Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I’m surprised that I even got waitlisted. I got waitlisted at Amherst, Middlebury, Northwestern, and now Williams. I would like to think that all of these waitlists mean that I’m a fairly impressive applicant, but a little voice in the back of my head tells me that in this economic climate top schools want a full pay applicant sitting on the waitlist just in case.
-Going to attend?: If I get in? Yes.

OTHER FACTORS

-Extra-curriculars: Sports, community service, summer programs, etc. No leadership, nothing outstanding.
-Comments: Williams was my dream school. First I was deferred, now I’m waitlisted. I just wish Williams would confirm the rejection and let me get on with my life. Anyway, I have a choice between two lower-ranked (but still excellent) LAC’s, so I’m pretty happy.

Decision:ACCEPTED

STATS:

-SAT: 2190 (CR800/W700/M690)
-SAT IIs: Math II- 800, Lit- 740, Bio M- 720 (I’m not a Bio student, self-studied)
-GPA: Don’t calculate.
-Rank: top 1%
-Other stats:

SUBJECTIVE

-Essays: It was probably the only supplemental essay that I liked.
-Teacher Recs: Pretty good.
-Counselor Rec: Pretty good.
-Hook (if any): None

LOCATION/PERSON

-State or Country: India
-School Type: Big Private
-Ethnicity: Indian
-Gender: Female
-Major Strength/Weakness: Well-rounded
-Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Seriously, I have no idea. Essays?
-Going to attend?: Probably! :)

OTHER FACTORS

-Extra-curriculars: DANCE! (many many types of forms), community service, clubs, etc
-Comments: WOW! =D With the need-aware factor into play, I was so shocked. :)

Anthem, you’re stats are pretty impressive for you to be rejected. Have you been accepted elsewhere?

Just wondering, does Williams send admitted students a t-shirt? And congrats to everyone who got in!

Anthem, you have very impressive stats, too good for Williams perhaps. Comes to show how random this all is.

accepted!!! completely floored… I’m so so excited.
I was completely sure I’d be rejected (I’m a white female from MA…).
pm me if you want my stats.

now time to decided between Williams, Wesleyan, Middlebury, Vassar, and Smith. hmmm…

Immortalix: I don’t know about RD, but ED did not. So I think it would be safe to assume that Williams does not send admitted students a t-shirt. However, williams-shop.com has lots of great shirts (+anything Williams for that matter!)

Williams!!! :D

Did they list the number of applicants / acceptances in your letters?

For those accepted, congrats, and for those not, it truly is as much about fit (and in some cases, random luck) as anything. The school could probably accept 1000 of the best applicants it doesn’t have room for and have essentially an indistinguishable student body. Although it feels like the end of the world, the differences between Williams and, say, Midd, or Carleton, or Haverford, or Bowdoin, or plenty of others, are really infinitisimal in the grand scheme of thingns.
