Official Yale 2013 RD Results Thread

Congrats to those accepted from the Dartmouth Board! We’re all secretly (and some of us not-so-secretly) jealous of you.

We even have a popular student organization dedicated to the love of Yale.
Don’t believe me? Watch: [YouTube - Dartmouth Loves Yale](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOQP738hnPY)

[] ACT: 35
[] APs (including this year’s): Calculus AB: 3, I’m taking 8 tests this year thanks to independent study (I am the first at my school to do this), but I didn’t know until my applications were in, so I was able to notify a few, but not all colleges
[] IBs (including this year’s: None
[] Senior Yr Courseload: Heavy-the two other AP classes (English Lit and Physics) offered besides the one I have already taken, Speech, Apologetics, Government/Economics, Band, Spanish 3…at my school, that is a really heavy load
[] Number of Apps from Your School: for all colleges I applied to except Davis (2 others), LA (1 other), Berkeley (1 other), and Pepperdine (1 other), there was no one else who applied. They are smart…but not very ambitious.

[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 200,000+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[] Strengths: SAT scores, at least one essay on each application, interviews
[] Weaknesses: SAT science scores (considering my science major), GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied: Sophomore and Junior year GPAs. They were lower compared to my 1st, 2nd, and 7th semesters: 4.0 weighted.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: THE ABSOLUTE WORST PART OF THIS ENTIRE PROCESS WAS WAITING FOR UC IRVINE FOR A MONTH JUST TO BE REJECTED. Hehe. On the other hand, I gave UC San Diego a call and they gave me the exact reason I was rejected because they could pull up my file and look at it. It was GPA by the way. And yes, the “chart” of point distribution is valid.

I knew what I was getting myself into, so I’m cool with it. If you need help with preparing for your application or college or whatever, PM me and I’ll be happy to help. I wish I had had some help. Perhaps I would have pushed my GPA a bit more.

[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Beta Club (President), Newspaper (Editor), LitMag (Editor & Consultant), Go Green (Coordinator), tutoring (founder & president), piano, choir (Student Director & Accompanist), lots of volunteer work… other stuff.
[]Job/Work Experience: restaurant work
[]Volunteer/Community service: lots and lots. Most devoted to weekly elementary tutoring.
[]Summer Activities: mortgage internship last summer, work and planning activities with friends 2 summers before
[]Essays: Strange one for CommonApp. A heartfelt, though perhaps overly melodramatic supplement. Botched-up short responses. Kicked myself for them.
[]Teacher Recommendation: Good. Both know me very well: are advisors for Newspaper and LitMag as well as my previous English and US History teachers. I’m almost like a co-worker to them. Except one teacher misspelled my name…
[]Counselor Rec: No idea. Good, I hope. She’s completely new and quite clueless, but she’s nice and wants the best for me.
[]Additional Rec: none… I took it seriously when they said they didn’t require more than asked for…
[li]Interview: Went very well! The lady was a chamber musician-turned-financier who was really delightful to chat with. =) If nothing, I enjoyed getting to know such an awesome person. I’m easily impressed.
[/li]

[]Hooks: none?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[]Strengths: My transcript is not bad, the interview went well (if that counted at all), and I worked hard in all of high school…
[]Weaknesses: The fact 24,000+ people applied in this whacked-up year. My CommonApp essay is a little kooky (honest though)… ECs are generic, but they’re what I love, so what can I do? Maybe SAT was lower than a lot of folks on CC, but it went down when I retook so I moved on with my life.
[li]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: There is an insane number of applicants who are severely well-qualified for Yale. Just looking on these forums, I realize that and am lucky to have had the chance to even THINK about applying. [/li]Surprise waitlists from Harvard and Princeton though… I didn’t screw up the application for them like I did for Yale. Ah well…

[/ul]General Comments: I LOVE UNC! It has been an interesting few months. I didn’t consider any Ivies until about last October, so it was all a shot in the dark. Now we know!

Best wishes to everyone! You deserve all the good things that will come to you.

I felt really good about my common application essay, and my Yale optional essay.

Well, I know that at least one teacher was authentic in scope and stylistic character, though I fear the other teacher and my counselor wrote the standard, generic recommendations that do little to impress.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really don’t know. I guess they overlooked the test scores and looked at me as a person and liked what they saw.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at Penn, Duke, Swarthmore, Tufts, Georgetown, George Washington, American, Fordham, UConn. rejected/waitlisted nowhere[/li][/ul]General Comments:
I really really really was not expecting to get accepted. I never allowed myself to dream of getting accepted to such a prestigious school because of the incredible competition. That’s why the Yale acceptance came as the biggest surprise and shock and every other emotion you could think of. When I logged into the site to access my decision, expecting a rejection, I was pretty calm because I had just found out that I got into UPenn, which had been my first choice. When a blue screen came up with a picture of a bulldog, congratulating and welcoming me to the Class of 2013, with the Yale fight song playing in the background, I ran downstairs to tell my mother, and started crying. I bawled like a baby for a good 30 minutes. I was shocked and overwhelmed – I still am, but fortunately, I’ve stopped crying lol.

[] Teacher Recommendations: Short, concise, and above all, very personal and informative; both teachers read them to me once I got my decision
[] Counselor Rec: Great, I think; I was able to establish a solid relationship with my counselor, so she put some extra effort into my rec
[li] Interview: My best interview, much more similar to a very interesting 1-hour long conversation. Interviewer seemed very pleased
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Intended Major: Ethics, Politics and Economics/English
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: White/Caucasian
[] Gender: Male

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays/Recs/Interview
[] Weaknesses: SATs I/SATs II
[] Why you think you were accepted: My SATs are not as high as one would like them to be, but my Common App and Supp essays kicked ass, seriously. I am not well-rounded as a student, so I positioned myself as a leader: Model UN, Student Council, while making emphasis on my tutoring ventures. I am positive that my interview secured my spot in Yale.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected: Harvard, Princeton / Waitlisted: Wharton (UPenn) / Accepted: Yale (duh), NYU, Bentley, Boston U, American (last three were safeties)

[/ul]General Comments:

I still cannot believe I’m a Yalie. I have already accepted their offer of admissions, and I am still on cloud nine. I am in awe, mind-boggled. It took me 10 full seconds to process the chanting bulldog in my screen, so I could later scream at the top of my lungs: “Mom, I got into Yale!” It was definitely one of the best moments of my life. Bulldog Days are coming up, and I can’t wait to meet everybody. I am extremely eager to experience the next 4 years of my life. Congrats to everyone!

[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably Good; Waivered Right
[] Counselor Rec: Probably good; I am the president of the club she advises for.
[] Additional Rec: From Professor at NCSU whom I worked under at internship.
