Official Yale 2013 SCEA Results Thread

haha oops- but still... MIT has always said that their percentage is low because they accept no more than 1/3 of their class early, and that they accept a large number of deferrees. Shrugs. Sorry.

*Decision: Deferred *

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: First time 2160 (720/640/800); Second time 2300 (800/700/800)
[] ACT: n/a
[] SAT II: Literature 670; Latin 680; Spanish w/Listening 690; Math 2 700
[] Unweighted GPA: Our school has a weird GPA system, but I haven’t had anything lower than an A-
[] Rank: 1/270
[] AP: Latin Literature (5); Spanish Language (4)
[] IB: n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit; AP Calculus AB; AP US History; AP European History; Honors Physics; Honors Computer Applications; Honors Band; AP Latin Vergil (Ind. Study)
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended; Nat’l Latin Exam (gold medalist); Yale Book Award; All-State Music festivals; Nat’l Honor Society; Spanish and Latin Honor Society; various school awards
[/li]

[] Job/Work Experience: Paid assignments for the local newspaper; teaching piano lessons
[] Volunteer/Community service: Organizing a musical group to perform for the elderly (3 yrs)
[] Summer Activities: Internship at State Capitol

[] Teacher Recommendation: Did not read
[] Counselor Rec: Did not read
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[li] Interview: Extremely philosophical and in-depth. Had some awkward moments but I felt I made a good impression in general.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State: Connecticut
[] School Type: Urban public (‘failing’) school
[] Ethnicity: Chinese
[] Gender: Female
[] Intended Major: Classics/Linguistics
[] Income Bracket: $100,000+
[li] Hooks: Being academically strong coming from a school like mine
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Transcript; Class rank; SAT I scores; Depth of extra-curriculars; Essays
[] Weaknesses: Being Asian; quantity of extra-curriculars; lack of national/international recognition
[li] Why you think you were deferred: No idea. I thought it was going to be either clear reject or accept because there’s nothing about my app that’s “on the fence.” I don’t feel that anything is going to chance between now and March (I’m just hoping to keep my senior year grades consistent) [/li][/ul]

General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who got in! Good luck to all, and I hope everyone stops worrying about it (at least temporarily) for the holiday season. And for slackers like me, have fun finishing up the rest of your apps…I know I will :)

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores. maybe essays?
[] Weaknesses: ECs possibly. I feel like I'm really involved at my school and in my community, but I haven't excelled on a national level or anything, and lots of SCEA-ers are just amazing in this respect. Also, I think my teacher recs were really good, but they wouldn't've been all "OMG best student i've encountered in 30 years teaching!!!" because my school is really competitive. While I'm near the top of my class, there's a lot of company haha.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess nothing stood out. I felt I had a strong app, but it's really competitive this year, and I wasn't at the top. [/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who got in!!! Good luck in the RD round at Yale and elsewhere, to everyone who got deferred or rejected.

alizarda, thats rediculous. Im surprised they didn't accept you. Not everyone can be a nobel prize winner, and your EC's show you aren't socially dead either.

[] Strengths: numbers; besides that, my EC list was kind of weird but I really was dedicated and pretty accomplished in my top three... however, see weaknesses below XD
[] Weaknesses: my EC list was weird XD I'll be honest in saying that I didn't have many awards for the writing and art at all, so my app did really try to show my skill and I think I did showcase it well, but at the same time obviously I still had no concrete prior review in the form of awards and so forth. it's understandable.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: ^ see above
[/ul]
General Comments: I was really surprised about southeastitan after looking at his stats... @@ looks like Yale wasn't very kind to fiction writers ea lol. all three kids got deferred from my school (including me), which is pretty sad. XD i'm not really upset, just hoping that I get in somewhere good RD. congrats to everyone who got in ea though! :) you guys really did deserve it.

Yale wasn't very kind to fiction writers ea lol

[/quote]

Stanford wasn't either, although it was just writers not restricted to fiction.

^ My application hinged on me being a writer/journalist (not a fiction writer) and I got in.

I thought the same thing, amciw. Sigh.

Sick in bed so I accompiled the following stats for all those who posted on this thread and submitted SAT Reasoning Test scores:

Admitted (34): SAT I average = 2315.59
Deferred (54): SAT I average = 2265
Rejected (17): SAT I average = 2182.94

For what's that worth! Clearly scores aren't the only criteria for admission. Good luck to all.

ephemeral, that's why I qualified it as fiction writers. ;) Journalist/editor ECs did seem to fare much better.
