Official Yale 2013 SCEA Results Thread

my family's on welfare... what's wrong with being poor

not my fault you didn't get in
ephemeral, that's why I qualified it as fiction writers. Journalist/editor ECs did seem to fare much better.
I find it hard to believe that this particular subtlety would make or break you. Sometimes it's dumb luck.

She's just saying fiction writers didn't do well in the admissions process. She's not saying it's because they were fiction writers that they were deferred.

Thanks tkd2009! seriously that made me happy :). There were so many amazingly qualified candidates though

lol @ iluvyale, thanks for brightening this uber-depressing thread.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
• SAT I (breakdown): 1950
• ACT: didn’t take
• SAT II: 650 on Spanish, 800 on math I
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.1 (I really screwed up junior and sophomore year)
• Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 17 out of 109
• AP (place score in parenthesis): 3 on AP calcalus, 4 on Spanish language, 4 on prob and stat, 5!!!! on us gov
• IB: none
• Senior Year Course Load: logic and reasoning, accounting III, Calc BC, computer programming two, ecology, Ap US history
• Major Awards: national debate award, african American national achievement award, basketball all-regional, captain
Subjective:
• Extracurriculars: debate club president, basketball captain, African American association president, break dancing club founder, diversity club founder,
• Job/Work Experience: various “restaurants” :/
• Volunteer/Community service: community organizer, campaign volunteer with barack obama (wooooooo!!!! :)) , inner city tutor at Detroit Southeastern
• Essays: rocking essays, counselor said best she’s read in a while.
• Teacher Recommendation: i read one, which was effusive and very me. other one is probably positive but less descriptive.
• Counselor Rec: realllllly goooood.
• Additional Rec: none.
• Interview: interviewer loved me: called me “spirited” and said I was “very bright”
Other
• Applied for Financial Aid?: yes. I think full ride because my family is not very wealthy.
• Intended Major: African American studies, mathematics
• State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
• Country (if international applicant): america
• School Type: public school, really crappy one…
• Ethnicity: black
• Gender: female
• Income Bracket: less than 40,000
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): black, first generation college

Reflection
• Strengths: really spirited, hard working, diligent.
• Weaknesses: I have a crappy school, and my test scores didn’t really reflect what I think I know.
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I deserve it. :)

i like your attitude, chocolategurrrl. congratulations! pray for me to join you this coming spring (RD decisions).

;)

^ Your (chocolategurrrl) posts seem suspicious to me. i just wonder why yale would admit a 1950/3.1 because they're obviously not choosing based on race (thewerg and princessbell for example). plus how did you already get into stanford and yale? whatever. if you're serious, good for you, you must have had some really stellar essays. i hope you didn't violate scea protocol though. because that would be slimy.

^ trolllllllll

...hookem168 I find that really mean of you to say. I'm pretty familiar with the college admissions process and the thing is with SCEA is that the rules don't really apply if there are financial considerations involved, as seems the case with chocolategurl. Maybe she applied early to Yale, and after sending everything in, found that stanford offered more in financial assistance...don't just assume the worst in people...

Well, you can't apply early to both Yale and Stanford, so this does seem suspicious. Does Stanford send out likely letters?
On the other hand, I don't think these stats are completely impossible. If this is a URM, first-generation college, from a weak public school in Detroit, and if the grades show a substantial upward trend, this could be true.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Unusual Asian? Interested in arts. Essays...
[] Weaknesses: Courseload wasn't strong enough.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I definitely think the lack of courseload strength hurt me. And I probably wasn't a standout applicant without any national recognition, etc. I was hoping that Yale would want a technical theatre-oriented Asian male, but guess not. XD
[/ul]General Comments: I was bummed when I first read the letter, but I've taken this as another experience. I never even dreamed of applying to Yale before, and I'm proud of myself for doing so. I still think Yale is a fantastic school, and hopefully will be attending there for grad school. And as cliche as it sounds, I know everything will work out in the end, so no hard feelings.

So congrats to all those accepted! And good luck to all those deferred. And to my fellow rejectees, I'm passing around a bottle of rum. ;)

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Don't know.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: To others applying - I got in without any connections whatsoever, as a middle-class Asian girl violinist. I applied on a bit of a whim, deciding on around Oct. 15. And look what happened! See, you can have some faith in the college application process. :) I trust that we shall all end up somewhere that is "right" for each of us.

wow, after looking over all these posts, I'm surprised at how similar the stats/ECs are between the accepted and the deferred. i thought those accepted would stand out more (don't get me wrong! many of those accepted are simply stellar!). Guess the essays matter more than I originally believed....
