my bad. i shouldve remembered that yale copies everything from harvard, even the peeing part.

SO false. Refer to the last page of the "What is New Haven Really Like" thread for a list of things Yale can claim that Harvard can't (and I live about 15 minutes away from Harvard, I've grown up chilling in Harvard Square with my friends so for my loyalty to be with Yale it must mean it really is just that much cooler! ;))

Decision: Accepted
Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Critical Reading 800 Math 770 Writing 800
[] ACT: 35 Composite
[] SAT II: U.S. History 800 Math II 800 Physics 790 Literature 730
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): my school has a weird GPA system- I guess somewhere around 4.0?
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school doesn't rank- top 10%, and I suspect somewhere around top 5 (students).
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Physics B (5). AP Microeconomics (5). AP Macroeconomics (5). AP Calculus AB (5). AP English Language (5). AP United States History (5).
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): School doesn't offer IB.
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus 2 with Multi-Variable Calculus, AP European History, AP Spanish Language, AP English Literature, Asian Studies Honors, Band IV Honors (counts in GPA haha).
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Craighill Burks Award for Excellence in American History (given to top AP US History student), University of Pennsylvania Alumni Book Award, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Semi-Finalist, member of Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, and the like, and several musical/athletic awards that I don't care to list.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): 1. Classical and jazz piano for 12 years- I take lessons with a prominent professor at a renowned music school, have given several solo piano recitals, have played jazz piano with school band since freshman year. 2. Classical and jazz trumpet for 7 years- 1st Trumpet in several regional honor bands, as well as principal trumpet in school symphonic band, lead trumpet in school jazz band. 3. Number two member of Academic Team (Quizbowl)- have placed highly last two years at NAQT Nationals, and won state championship last two years as well. 4. Member of Varsity Basketball Team for four years, though not huge contributor. 5. Geography Team member- won county contest each year I competed.
[] Job/Work Experience: 1. Piano Accompanist for people at my school performing instrumental solos for Solo/Ensemble Festival. 2. Junior Counselor at my school's summer camp two years ago. 3. Paid piano performer for several local churches around my city.
[] Volunteer/Community service: This is, I think, what helped to push my application over the edge, in terms of leadership. 1. I founded and became the chairman of a Music Department at a branch of the Breakthrough Collaborative, an organization designed to put disadvantaged students in college prep schools and 4-year colleges, and recruited musically inclined friends and other young musicans to teach private lessons over the summer. 2. I'm President of a school club called "Rock 4 Relief" that holds benefit rock concerts with performers from school, (raised over 3,000 dollars from the last one) and (3.) I organize a concert every year for elderly nursing homes around my area, called the "Chocolate Covered Strawberry Tour." 4. I also built homes over the last two summers for victims of Hurricane Katrina with the varsity basketball team.
[] Summer Activities: See above.
[] Essays: Spent a lot, a lot of time on these. Common App was about how playing basketball has affected my life- my admisions rep said in her congratulatory letter upon admission that it was one of the most "endearing" essays she had read this fall. Yale Supplement was about music's effect on my life- also pretty good, compactly written essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Signed off on waiver, but from Econ and Physics teachers, two teachers I had gotten to know well, so I'm sure they came out fine.
[] Counselor Rec: Academic team sponsor, knew me well, I'm sure was a solid advocate for me.
[] Additional Rec: I sent an additional rec from my Middle School Band Director, who has never stopped helping me since I graduated from middle school- very effusive letter. Also sent in Common Application Art Supplement with a few piano recordings, an extensive music resume (it was like 12 pages long), and a letter from my private piano teacher.
[] Interview: Went fine- guy didnt go to undergraduate school at Yale, but was from business/economics background, which falls in line with my interests.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup.
[] Intended Major: Economics and Mathematics. Maybe Music?
[] State (if domestic applicant): Florida
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Independent
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian/White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Upper-middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I'm a guy from a region that produces a lot of Yalies- suppose that gives me an advantage, but no legacy, no first generation, no ethnicity, not geographically diverse, not a recruited athlete or anything like that.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I have a lot of energy to excel academically, musically, athletically, and also take on many leadership roles around my community and my school. I spent a lot of time on my essays, filling out my application meticulously, and just making sure my application would be competitive. My recommendations were also very good.
[] Weaknesses: Wasn't much I could do else- I guess get more nationally recognized awards in piano and music?
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My nonstop energy that I put into all my pursuits, the hard work I spent to prepare the application, my essays, my accomplishments, and glowing recs. I have no natural advantages- I have no interesting ethnicity, I have no legacy, not an international student, not geographically diverse, not an athlete, my parents dont give millions to the school, but I still got in EA on merit alone. I feel incredibly proud of what I have done, and I hope every admit feels the same way. Keep the faith in applying to college, and I wish the best of luck to everyone in getting into where they want to go.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Good Luck!!

This thread makes me depressed. My chances suck

My chances are fairly horrific as well.
But you have to look at it positively: it's YALE. If you don't get in, it won't mean you weren't an awesome applicant.

To pianoguy45: First off, congratulations on your acceptance! You're obviously a qualified applicant and have every right to rejoice in your success. I am tempted to say the following, however, in response to your repeated mentions of not being geographically diverse or being a first generation applicant: these are not gratuitous 'advantages' if you will. Travel, as well as out-of-the norm experiences are extremely formative and play a large role in defining who a person is, their level of maturity and ,in some respects, academic potential.
While it is great that you got in due to 'academic merit alone', I don't think that better-traveled individuals who gain acceptance are any less academically able. Rather, the ability to gain outstanding scores despite differences in academic system/curriculum are equally - if not somewhat more- laudable, as is the objective, wide-ranging perspective one gains when, due to circumstance or other, one is a part of a geographically-diverse minority and brings in the weight of their experience into whatever they do.

(For the record: I don't have any hooks either, but I have moved continents every few years since I was 8 months old).

Hope to join you in fall by some miracle!

IndiaRubber- what I meant by geographical diversity was that I'm not from a part of the United States (examples- Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Idaho, the like) that produce few Yale admits. Yale wants to increase geographical diversity across the United States in order to produce a more heterogeneous student body. I didn't mean that people who don't travel have more or less advantage; I was merely referring to the fact that as I live in Florida, a region that produces a fair amount of admits, I am at a disadvantage as compared to others that could apply from the states that I named.

Don't get me wrong- this is not to mean that applicants from these states are unqualified- I'm just saying that admissions officers would respond to the "hooks" these students provide. Best of luck to you, IndiaRubber!

^whoops meant for RD thread

accepted. :-)

i think I just changed my decision and will apply RD, unless i blow my ACT out of the water in June. I have some unusual EC’s and am a recruited athlete, but don’t know if I will make it on the “top 5 list” of recruits as a hook. ahhhhhh, this is stressful. :-)

waatt?? y? is RD easier or something? where else would u apply early?

I can’t believe I just read all the stats of the accepted xD
I stack up pretty nicely actually baha :D
