Decision: Deferred

[li] Intended Major: Economics
[/li]

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 730R/800M/700W/9E
[] ACT: ---
[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 790 Chem, 760 Bio M, 700 Global History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.32 (A=>4, A+=>4.3, H=>5)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): No rank but would be top-3 of 360ish
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): All 5s: Global, Comp Sci AB, US History, English Language, Music Theory, BC Calc, Stat, Chem
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): ---
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Gov/Macro integrated, AP Micro, AP physics, AP French, Calc 3, SUPA english, jazz ensemble
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Nat’l Scholar, Nat’l Merit SF, Rensselaer Medal, did well on some national French test, others…
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Biggest one was a self-started sportswriting thing…don’t want to say too much b/c I’m pretty visible…; music: played piano in school jazz ensemble for four years, also played in other regional groups (one select, one not), also play electric bass in a rock band; sports – jv/varsity volleyball since 10th grade, school baseball since freshman year, play/practice both sports off-season as well; NHS and stuff…
[] Job/Work Experience: not much…internship at local tv station, worked a summer at my dad’s work. Got a pretty serious job but it started in November.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Pretty weak, but our rock band donates all money from our performances to the Elias fund (over $1000 so far).
[] Summer Activities: Work, baseball, other stuff…not really part of my app.
[] Essays: Hit-or-miss, one was unusual, other showed passion about my writing EC well.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read but I know one was amazing.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read but she seems on top of things.
[] Additional Rec: ---
[] Interview: With admissions office over the summer…seemed to go really well, she was really nice and said I sounded like a Yale student when I was talking about why Yale.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Upstate NY
[] Country (if international applicant): ---
[] School Type: Public, ~360 per class
[] Ethnicity: White as it gets
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $100K-$150K
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): not really…writing EC was pretty unique.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA/course load/APs; passionate about ECs.
[] Weaknesses: Interviewer said I was too attractive and that everyone else on campus would just be jealous and miserable…but seriously: SAT, community service, no hooks, maybe essays.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I thought most of it would come down to that writing EC, which was a big part of my app…if they didn’t really care for it, I probably wasn’t getting in, if they thought it was neat but like any other EC, I was in the same position as a lot of people (in a huge borderline pool for few spots), and if they really loved it I had a great shot…guess I don’t really know.
[/ul]General Comments: Good luck to everyone and I really don’t want to start my eight other apps…still have hope but kinda felt my app would either be one that would really wow them or not.

Reflection
Strengths: My mixed background, hopefully my recs, my diabetes stuff
Weaknesses: my SAT scores? the fact that I haven't taken too many APs until this year (but thats not my fault!!!! hmmph)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly, I felt like I was a very competitive applicant and I am really upset. I have no clue why they would defer me instead of accept me. I think I was exactly what they were looking for!

Basically, I have been screaming at my computer scream for twenty minutes and I am so scared to go to school tomorrow and find out if two other girls from my school got in :(
Hopefully I'll make it RD, but at that point I'm not sure I will want Yale if they had to think twice about me, ya know?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: showed lots of leadership and initiative; perfect stats

[/ul]General Comments:
Congratulations to the lucky few! And if you got rejected/deferred, just remember that there's most definitely somebody out there that's more qualified than all of us that also met with the same fate today. We've been denied the Yale experience, but there are plenty of other great schools out there waiting to hand us acceptance letters. So while the next few months may be a bit of a heartbreak, be prepared for some good fortune come March/April.

I'd like to second the above poster's comment -- perfect scores aren't everything.

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at Children's Hospital
[] Summer Activities: Volunteering, Lifeguarding, Acting, Research.

[] Teacher Recommendation: One really good, one just okay.
[] Counselor Rec: He likes me a lot...
[] Additional Rec: None sent.
[] Interview: The on-campus one was, I thought the alumni one was really good.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
[] Intended Major: Cognitive Science/English
[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: African-American
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Just under $200,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): If you want to call URM a hook...
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I thought that I did a good job of showing my passions for writing and for life, in my essays, in my interviews, and my English teacher's recommendation. I'm a good writer, and I looked back at the essays that I wrote for Yale, and I thought they were two of the best pieces I've written in my entire life. URM, too, I guess.
[] Weaknesses: GPA. Junior year was my worst year. Downhill trend...My 2nd rec, when I read it, wasn't too stellar, just okay. I didn't see his checklist. I overwrote for every essay/short answer except the short takes.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My GPA for sure.
[/ul]General Comments: I won't lie, I did hope that AA would give me the boost I needed to get over the hump that is my GPA. But it didn't, and I think that's fair...I'm not an athelete, and my EC's are just normal-ish, even though I'm really into them. I looked over the past 2 years SCEA threads, and the only African-American to get deferred was a boy with a 24 on his ACT, so I'm not sure whether I should feel good that I proved that AA isn't everything, or if I should feel really really stupid.

I'm glad I got deferred, and not rejected, but i'm not sure what to do. For now, I'm pretending that deferral=rejection. I guess I'm just going to focus on applying to a few more schools, and then I'll have to try to figure out what my next best option is. I wish I had a second choice, so I could just say, well at least I can go to X school, but I don't. So I'm just going to apply everywhere. I did apply for a few scholarship programs, so hopefully I'll have a trip to Scripps in February and one to WashU (again, lol) in March to cheer me up. I'm probably not going to frequent the Yale board anymore, save maybe a random post or two and a bit of lurking as the RD applicants get ready for their big day. I'll miss you guys. But I need to move on.

I'm just glad that so many people got in, and that it wasn't a slaughter like Stanford. I wish that Yale had given me a chance- I really did feel like I belonged there. It really felt like home.

To those deferred, there is still hope so don't give up just make sure you apply other places too. To those rejected, clearly if you applied to Yale, you are super smart and motivated and will undoubtedly do great at whichever college you choose to attend, so just forget Yale and go do your thing! To the CC community in general, thank you for the advice, it has been very helpful for me over the past few months :)

[] Job/Work Experience: I put down orchestra, as we recently became free from the school and are our own entity, but I'm not seeing any direct money. It goes to our summer trip. I also tutor a local youngster in the ways of edumahcation!

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores and grades. Maybe the essays, maybe my recs.
[] Weaknesses: Leadership, extracurriculars, nothing really outstanding.
[li] Why you think you were deferred: With what little I've accomplished, Yale's not sure if I can really make use of the time there and if I can really be a true Yale representative. Or maybe they were playing darts and I wasn't hit ;)[/li]Now that I think about it, it's because I decided to skip on that Advanced LEGO Building class I was planning on self-studying. Jeepers.
[/ul]

General Comments: w00t w00t for those Accepted! Your guys' hard work paid off! To those who were deferred, I salute you. We can wait in anxious consideration as our grey hairs multiply. Best way to live, methinks. To those rejected, rejoice for the sun will still come up tomorrow. You determine your own future. This school's just one pathway of many.

Now back to the real world. Boy oh boy. I'm quickly snapped back to the same 'ol way of things when I look at all the homework due tomorrow -_-
