Reflection
Strengths: I suck and should absolutely go die - I have no idea what I was thinking applying to Yale; I'm a complete idiot
Weaknesses: Everything was good - nothing was great (although I completely disagree with this - given the time I put into my application [a little rushed] I didn't show them everything I could have, it's a shame, but at least I know they don't know everything about me (I'm a part of a large internationally recognized leadership and humanitarian initiative which I absolutely love, but I was afraid to put it on the application because I was just beginning my journey in November (so much for second chances, recommend live in the moment), SAT scores low
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I came off too enthusiastic about Yale and for someone to read thousands of essays it might have sounded prosaic, I was not a star on paper - I should have included more information, I sort of feel embarrassed for applying but ultimately I have no regrets - I just hope I will get to go to college
General Comments: To all future applicants - I would recommend you not treat Early Action as a dry run and only apply early if your application is absolutely perfect because I know that I am a strong candidate; my application didn't do me complete justice. I was pretty sure I would get deferred and I was very wrong. As the pool becomes more competitive it's a very good idea to think of your application as one life line with no second chances. I'm so sorry I wasted their time.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:
SAT I: (cr,m,w) 760,770,770
ACT: didn't send
SAT II: 760 Math 1, 710 Math 2, 730 French, 640 Literature, 620 US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.89
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Class doesn't rank (only 29 in senior class)
AP (place score in parenthesis): European History 3, US History 4, English Literature 4, French Language: 4, Music Theory 5
Senior Year Course Load: took the most difficult offered.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Lots of school, local, state and regional music awards, AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Commended, Religious Youth Service Award, Laureat du Chapitre (Concours Nationale)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Large choir, select jazz ensemble choir, church youth group, early morning seminary, private piano & voice lessons, school & community theatre
Job/Work Experience: summer employment as a research assistant for eco-friendly homebuilder 2008
Volunteer/Community service: A lot through school and my church Youth group; participated in Boy Scouts and got Life Rank (though I failed to put this on my application)
Summer Activities: summer homestay in France 2007, community summer theatre troupe 2008
Essays: Outstanding - Common App described a synthesis between morality and artistic expression that happened to me during a drama production I was in; Yale Supplement I discussed my "very strange fascination" with maps and atlases and tied that in to my summer homestay in France. Lots of adult read them and I thought they were the strongest part of my application.
Teacher Recommendation: Didn't read but I chose teachers that liked me
Counselor Rec: good
Additional Rec: My piano teacher sent a rec outlining my musical achievements
Supplemental: I submitted both piano and vocal recordings along with my appplication
Interview: It wasn't bad, but it wasn't outstanding
Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: music, psychology
State (if domestic applicant): Washington
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: private
Ethnicity: white
Gender: male
Income Bracket: <100k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Uhhh......

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, EC's
Weaknesses: GPA, interview (i don't think it hurt my app but it definitely didn't add anything)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was expecting a rejection so I'm ecstatic that Yale loves me enough to consider me among the masses in Regular decision :)

General Comments: I'm excited to be deferred - an acceptance would've been nice, but obviously that can't happen to everyone. Plus I refused to open my admissions decision until I knew that I'd be content whatever the result. Looking through the results of other people I'm completely shocked I wasn't outright rejected, so I consider this a blessing. If you were accepted congratulations, I admire you and hope to emulate your passion for success and learning. If you were deferred/rejected, please do not be discouraged, neither is something that reflects your inadequacy or weaknesses. Use these experiences as lessons or personal anecdotes to remind yourself that 1) no one is perfect, even the seemingly perfect ones, and 2) you had the guts and drive to apply to Yale in the first place!

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): speech & debate (9-12, captain 12, national awards), varsity cross-country and track (10-12, captain both 12, divisional state medals in track & regional in cross-country), regional science bowl (9-12, captain 12), national history day (11-12). more important, many many classics activities: inter alia, translated and directed a greek tragedy in 11, & now running a statewide educational nonprofit in 12.
[] Job/Work Experience: shamefully, none.
[] Volunteer/Community service: unpaid job managing on-campus coffee shop this year (raises funds for the class); directed nativity pageants at quaker meeting (10-12); peer tutoring (9-12); casual work for a homeless shelter (9-12)
[] Summer Activities: 2007, study abroad in austria & debate camp at the university of wyoming. 2008, TASP. B**
[] Essays: i think these were the heart of my application. common app essay traces my change from isolated, ashamed & angry in my sophomore and junior years to the polar opposite after TASP. i don't really like the version of myself which this essay discusses, but i think it represents me as i am now very accurately. secondary essay is best described as a prose-poem about classical greek, which keeps me sane. why yale basically says first "you have a fabulous classics department" and second "i go to a tiny high school and need a tiny college to hold my hand."
[] Teacher Recommendation: i read one, which was effusive and very me. other one is probably positive but less descriptive.
[] Counselor Rec: i read it, also effusive. lots of superlatives.
[] Additional Rec: they have enough to read
[] Interview: not the best i've given, but pretty lively. interviewer said almost nothing, which made it very hard to decide when to stop.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes. got a pittance, which hopefully will change.
[] Intended Major: classics
[] State (if domestic applicant): arizona
[] Country (if international applicant): usa
[] School Type: tiny ultraconservative charter; curriculum is fixed and resembles directed studies or the columbia core.
[] Ethnicity: WASP
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: upper-middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): classics major (with very deep background), TASP, maybe charter student, maybe geographical
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: academics. academics. did i mention academics? seriously, i represent the "intellectual" (scare quotes are intentional) culture that yale in particular wants to promote.
[] Weaknesses: my parents are professors (this can be a major liability)
[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i wore my lucky headband today. seriously, 1) i love yale and it shows; 2) luck. [/ul]

General Comments: Thank you to everyone that helped me through the process. A special thanks to people that mentioned that my SAT scores were too low and I had a tough chance. All I can say is that im glad and grateful to be accepted into Yale 2013!!!!!

nealth, how did you qualify for USAMO but not get a 800 on math? I was alarmed at your straight up rejection, I noticed you didnt put your gpa....?

SAT Math is more about carefulness than intellectual ability. I know a guy with Gold medal international math olympiad but did not get 800 too. Two mistakes and you bid 50 points goodbye.
