<p>Decision: Deferred</p>

<p>Objective:[ul]
[<em>] SAT I (breakdown): 700R 800M 700W - 2200
[</em>] ACT:
[<em>] SAT II: 800 MIIC, 780 Chem, 730 Bio (not sent)
[</em>] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82
[<em>] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): ~ top 5% (450)
[</em>] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Stat (only 2 AP courses offered before senior yr)
[<em>] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[</em>] Senior Year Course Load: AP Phy (Mech), AP Calc BC, AP Bio, Phy C (independent study), Continental Lit, Medieval Hist (no other APs offered)
[<em>] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nat'l merit semis, cum laude society (dunno what this is really), DOE NSB Regional Champions, some other stuff...
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[</em>] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Team (captain), National Science Bowl (captain), Soccer (9-12, incl club), Web Design + Programming, Graphic Art
[<em>] Job/Work Experience: sadly none
[</em>] Volunteer/Community service: Youth Soccer Coaching, Coaching Middle School Science Olympiad
[<em>] Summer Activities: HSSP Astronomy (got an A) + more soccer
[</em>] Essays: Very good, very deliberate, lots of refinement
[<em>] Teacher Recommendation: awesome, esp for math
[</em>] Counselor Rec: dunno, wildcard...
[<em>] Additional Rec: considering...
[</em>] Interview: very well. took over an hour, two-sided conversation, no dull moments
[/ul]Other[ul]
[<em>] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[</em>] Intended Major: Physics & Mathematics
[<em>] State (if domestic applicant): MA
[</em>] Country (if international applicant):
[<em>] School Type: public (450)
[</em>] Ethnicity: indian
[<em>] Gender: m
[</em>] Income Bracket: > $200K
[<em>] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[</em>] Strengths: none on paper. But there were a number of intangibles that I submitted along with my application: art portfolio, physics projects (successfully constructed Van de Graaff generator and Tesla Coil, and future projects mentioned, all with low budget)
[<em>] Weaknesses: Everything else. Though driven, my numbers are still low. My high school is very rigorous, though, to put the GPA in context. No one gets 3.8 > with SAT scores < 2100. All the 4.0s with 2200s are just nonexistent.
[</em>] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really should have been rejected, maybe they saw something in me :)
[/ul]General Comments: Good Luck!!</p>

<p>I was deferred~~~Oh~~~</p>

<p>once again, props to eating food</p>

<p>FTW</p>

<p>ACCEPTED!!! Thanx God 4 evrything! Stats comin up......(very ordinary though)</p>

<p>GUYS I cannot write coherent messages right now because I am excited for everybody. I actually can't believe it was a year ago and there is already a new prospective freshman class. Can you feel the excitement? Because I can. Feel free to hit me up with questions, little Yale babies. :D</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted</p>

<p>Objective:[ul]
[<em>] SAT I (breakdown): 1600/2390 (one sitting)
[</em>] ACT:
[<em>] SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Chem, 780 US History
[</em>] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95 on the 94=A
[<em>] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 7/502
[</em>] AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc BC 5 (AB 5), US History 5, English Language 5, Chemistry 5, Stats 4 (sophomore year)
[<em>] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[</em>] Senior Year Course Load: Post-BC math (which I helped put into place and was mentioned in my counselor rec), AP Physics C, AP Studio Art, Performing arts, AP European History, AP English Lit, dumb NJ graduation requirements
[<em>] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major. This does not seem like the biggest deal to Yale.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[</em>] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Lacrosse: Have played club all my life. Three-year varsity, two-year starter, won county and state titles. At one point high school team ranked #2 in NJ, consistently in top 10. My club team was ranked in the top 100 nationally this spring, and I captained that team.
Art: I'm not going to try to describe my work, but I take classes and do submissions to school publications, and have won a few semi-prestigious regional awards. It's something that doesn't reflect on me as well on my application as it should; hopefully my essay on it can liven it up.
I've been involved in a lot of tutoring, both volunteer and private. Sophomore year I was just involved in a school program, junior/senior year added tutoring of those members of the lacrosse team lacking in intelligence. (~2-3 hrs/wk)
Science olympiad, not a huge commitment, but will be captain Sr. year. I've also won a couple fairly prestigious county awards. Yes, I am really in science olympiad and love to paint.
Three-year columnist for school paper. Not really eligible for any awards unfortunately, but a lot of hours were put in.
For fun, I am a music/film buff. I had a three-week internship at a bilingual magazine in Mexico that concentrates on film and books, and also have done a little radio work.
[<em>] Job/Work Experience: Decent amount of tutoring (3 or so hours 11-12 grades).
[</em>] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer tutoring (~2 hrs/week). Do not list the number of hours in total that you have done community service on your application.
[<em>] Summer Activities: Some cool stuff, but no jaw-dropping summer programs or some such.
[</em>] Essays: I think these got me in (I think anyone who got in really had to write compelling essays, because there isn't a ton of separation otherwise). They were insightful labors of love.
[<em>] Teacher Recommendation: I assume both were fantastic.
[</em>] Counselor Rec: Fantastic
[<em>] Interview: Not what I was expecting. We connected so well, and she told me that I was getting a great recommendation.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[</em>] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[<em>] Intended Major: Philosophy
[</em>] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[<em>] Country (if international applicant):
[</em>] School Type: Pubz
[<em>] Ethnicity: Not reported
[</em>] Gender: Male
[<em>] Income Bracket: Financial aid borderline. Use your imagination.
[</em>] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I have zero hooks.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[<em>] Strengths: Scores, recommendations, essays, achievement in lacrosse even if I'm not playing in college.
[</em>] Weaknesses: Nothing jumps out with ECs, GPA/rank could be a touch better.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays. My essays were risky. They did not adhere to the College Essay Writing 101 that you find in bestselling how-tos. Mine were rarely personal... one painted a picture of a man I met (although I did relate it to myself at the end), and one was just a little worldview/perspective that I really enjoyed, even though it didn't make sense to put in a college application. Don't follow college essay writing orthodoxy! Go outside the box! Write with your heart, not with your college of choice in mind. The kids from my school arguing for a formulaic approach have been deferred/denied.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I'm humbled. I'm so lucky and fortunate. To all you deferrees, you all still have a shot in the regular round. Good Luck!!</p>

<p>Good luck rivergirl123. I thought that too, but it turned out okay.
Have faith! I believe in you!</p>

<p>haha np, eating food, you deserve it!
Gahhhh I submitted my app today, so I am hella nervous....only four months of waiting left....lmao</p>

<p>Anyway, it seems like CC did pretty d@mn well with Yale: a good amount of acceptances...a TON of defferals...not too many rejections.</p>

<p>WELL DONE!</p>

<p>Just to make it less painful to all those who didn't get into Yale early that this year MIT had the worst acceptance rate of all the early actions. Here is the excerpt from the MIT
This year, we received about 5,000 applications for early action admission, a record number for us and a 27% increase over last year. We admitted 540 students for an admit rate of 11%, or fewer than one of every nine applicants. </p>

<p>MIT</a> Admissions | Blog Entry: "MIT Early Action Admissions Decisions Available Online"</p>

<p>
</p>

<p>But I think that's about where MIT's early accpetance rate has always hovered (I think?). The difference is that a large number of MIT deferees are accepted in the spring.</p>

<p>Decision: DEFERRED.</p>

<p>Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 800 M, 800 CR, 780 W (2380)
SAT II: Math 2 800, Chinese (probs wasn’t taken seriously 800, US History 790, Chemistry (770)
Unweighted GPA (out of 10.0): 94
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Magnet School of 67, school doesn't rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): Nine 5's USH, Eng Lang, US Gov, Comp Gov, Micro, Macro, Psych, Calc AB, Calc BC. and one 4 Chem. Chem and the Calcs were in school, everything self-studied (possible explanation for relatively low qpa)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Phys Mech, AP Phys E/m, ap eng lit, ap bio, multivariable calc, architecture (required class), and comm media (grduation reqt, but my teacher was an english major at yale and has worked wonders on my essays!)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nmsf, national ap scholar, eagle scout with palm</p>

<p>Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): town's recycling advisory committee (high school rep), town's freecycling grant committee (chair), fed challenge (econ competition, president), various of other service related stuff
Volunteer/Community service: easily 750+, but i never count/keep track
Summer Activities: internship at city hall and in shanghai (pretty cool experience but i never really write about it)
Essays: probs 8-9.5/10 not like super duper fantastic, but definitely above avg
Teacher Recommendation: pretty good (one came out of nowhere and volunteered, and another wrote solid recs before for other things)
Counselor Rec: pretty good, i imagine that since there's only 67 of us, she can spend more time on each one, and since i take so many APs (she proctors them) that i'd be memorable
Additional Rec: Director of the Department i worked for this summer at city hall-fantastic (my one saving grace, makes what i did this summer (really hardcore systems management/municipal public policy) stand out as something more than just picking up trash,
Interview: had one on campus in the summer, it was so-so compared to my other ones</p>

<p>Other:
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Public Magnet
Ethnicity: Chinese represent!
Gender: M
Income Bracket: upper middle (not eligible for finaid)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): i'm really really big on sustainability, and colleges around the nation are catching on, i have som pretty good experience in terms of sustainability mgmt, have spoken to several individuals at yale about it, and they seem pretty excited about what i can bring to the table (idk how much that helps in terms of admissions, but yale's committment to sustainability was something that got me excited about it, more so than say azkaban)
Reflection
[<em>] Strengths: see above (i guess what i said above was more of a strength an a hook, but oh well) well-rounded[</em>] Weaknesses: relatively low qpa, could be mitigated by test scores and academic extracurricular activities. (also relatively low rank, second decile, although not reported)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: lots of talent people. not having a legitmate hook. possibly grades, although i really doubt it, since i was deferred i probably made it to committee and i can't imagine them nit picking over B+s in french in light of my other accomplishments.</p>

</p>

<p>It has never been so low during early action. It has always been close to 14% or more. This is what happened last year from MIT website:
Early action
Applicants 3,925
Admitted 522 (13.3%)
Deferred to regular action 2,903

[</em>] Intended Major: Chemistry
[<em>] State (if domestic applicant): PA
[</em>] Country (if international applicant):

[</em>] Income Bracket: Too high for financial aid, too little to donate a building
[<em>] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[</em>] Strengths: Decent academics, athletics, etc.
[<em>] Weaknesses: I'm not special.
[</em>] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess because I was borderline and they didn't want to lose my alumni funds quite yet
[/ul]General Comments: I love Yale, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be! It's been a really humbling experience on CC the last few months. Everyone is so incredible; I can only hope that I'll end up somewhere with students something like all of you! I'm trying to keep my head up and get excited about other schools. Good Luck!!</p>
