Reflection

[ *] Strengths: Rank. Decent test scores. Good high school. Foreign exchange.
[ *] Weaknesses: WASP from the northeast…
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Idk

General Comments:
Accepted: Penn (ATTENDING!!!), Tulane (25k/yr merit), UCONN (half merit scholarship), USC (half ride), UVA (Echols honor program)
Rejected: Stanford REA, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Duke
Waitlisted: Vanderbilt

I’m out here to prove that a Stanford REA reject can be successful RD at other schools. And I was. PENN 2015!!! Couldn’t be happier!!

Deferred EA–> Waitlisted

This is cruel and unusual punishment. By the time final waitlist decisions come out in June, I will have waited roughly nine months. I wonder if I was the first to confirm the waitlist? I did so less than two minutes after decisions came out, haha.

Rejection would have been easier, hope (especially because Yale is my first choice) is a terrible thing.

[] Income Bracket: 100,000-150,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SATs, course load, independent study in philosophy, teacher recs
[] Weaknesses: ECs–explained them on the extra section of the common app and wrote about potential Yale ECs in the “Why Yale?” portion
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ECs, supplemental essay possibly
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? University of Chicago
[/ul]
General Comments: Yale has been my number one school for a long time. I can’t believe it ended this way (well I could see it coming but you know what I mean). Getting rejected from 3/3 Ivies in one day is harsh. :(

Waitlisted!!!

I’m not going to post full stats because I think it’s pretty meaningless. I wrote some sincere essays and had really great recs, I think that’s why I got this far. Honestly, in a perfect world where there weren’t a ridiculously large amount of qualified applicants, I feel like the waitlisted would have gotten in. So I’m really happy, it was an uphill battle and I feel like I made something out of it. I’ll hold out hope for the waitlist but if not then I’m gonna be a Bruin!!

SAT: 670 Math, 760 CR, 800 WR (one time) –> 2230
SAT Subject: 600 French, 600 US History

GPA: 3.85~? I had a lot of community college courses

Rejected. Every school I’ve gotten in to has offered me a substantial amount of merit- based aid, honors stuff, etc. but I have definitely felt discriminated against by the big schools (state schools and, now, the Ivies.) I think it’s probably because I’m a homeschooler. I have heard from the people at the smaller schools (who actually took the time to READ my application and recommendations) that mine was one of the best apps they had received not just this year, but ever. I am very disappointed that the Ivies are unable to think outside the box and muscle their way through a transcript not issued by a public school. The volunteer hours on my resume are on par with many med school/vet school applicants.

Decision: Accepted

Decision: Deferred SCEA -> Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 – 800 CR, 740 M, 760 W
[] ACT: 35 – 35 E, 36 R, 35 M, 35 S
[] SAT II: 790 Math II, 770 US History, 750 Literature
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/764 (7/802 at midyear)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History, Spanish Language, English Lang & Comp, Statistics – 5; US History – 4
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB/BC, AP English IV (Lit & Comp), AP Comp Gov & Pol, AP Econ, online US government, AP biology, drumline, band
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): One national essay contest
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Music was my main extracurricular. Drumline and marching band for 4 years, captain my last year – about 35 hours a week. Our drumline has done really well at national competitions and is recognized as one of the best in the nation, and I did really well at a national solo competition too. I also compose – a film score I wrote won best soundtrack at ASU’s campus filmfest. And I play piano (solo, jazz band, accompanying), but I haven’t done comparatively well there – it’s more for myself. Besides music, I write for the Dallas Morning News, am in Scouts, am president of NHS, am in JWAC and competed in WorldQuest (got 3rd this year, 4th last year out of about 80 teams), and some other stuff that I can’t think of right now.
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: Scouts, NHS – will graduate with 100 hours of service. probably the weakest part of my app.
[] Summer Activities: I went to Europe twice – once with friends and once on an expenses-paid trip from an essay contest. I went to a week-long marimba workshop and geeked out about the world cup. The rest of my summers were taken up by drumline and band practice.
[] Essays: If anything got me in, it was these. Common app was about Kerouac’s On the Road, studying jazz, and how both combined to create an important part of my worldview. Yale supplement was about conducting an ensemble. And my short answer was about being in a successful drumline despite being deaf in one ear.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Haven’t read either of them. One from AP English 3 teacher who I was really close to, one from AP Stats teacher who I was not as close to.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty much just echoed my application. Only caught a glimpse of it though.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[li] Interview: Nein.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes.
[] Intended Major: I put undecided.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Tejas
[] School Type: Massive, ridiculously competitive public (34 NMSs this year)
[] Ethnicity: White and NA (but no tribal or cultural affiliation)
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: 120-150k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none unless you count the Native American, but I really don’t think it had an influence because I’m also white and middle-class.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, definitely. My involvement in music is pretty extensive too.
[] Weaknesses: No massive awards, not a lot of community service.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I wasn’t what Yale was looking for this year. Simple as that.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? Accepted: Harvard, Princeton, UChicago, Brown, Columbia, Fordham Lincoln Center with tuition, UT Plan II
[/ul]
General Comments: Kinda funny how these things work out. Yale was my first choice from the beginning, and it’s the only school I got rejected from. Oh well! I think I’ll survive, haha.

Decision: Waitlisted
