[] Why Yale?: Pretty cookie cutter answer (didn’t realize that at the time)
[] Short Takes: Pretty unique. I thought they were great.
[] Additional Essay:[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation 1: Didn’t read, but a later rec from him was amazing[/li][] Teacher Recommendation 2: Didn’t read
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read
[] Additional Rec: None
[] Interview: Awful. It was over the phone. He told me a bit about Yale, then I asked him questions for 20 minutes, then he said something like “Well, before we go, what do you want to tell me that the Admissions Office might want to know?” I stumbled for a bit (I felt like all of my answers were already in my app), then emailed him answer afterward (he told me to do so). After my Pomona interview, the lady said something along the lines of “I think you’re an intelligent, hard-working, compassionate young man who’ll be a great fit at Pomona and I’ll tell the Admissions Office that.” After my Yale interview, we were both left wishing something more had been said.

[] Summer Activities: FOOTBALL all summer. Internship and travel.
[] Essays (subjects and personal opinions):[list]
[] Common App Main Essay: Pretty good essay, lighthearted and showed my involvement/love for my school.
[] EC Short Answer: About football, nothing spectacular.
[] Why Yale?: List format, VERY specific. Mentioned favorite parts of my visit, professor’s research papers I’ve read, unique courses that interest me
[] Short Takes: Answered all of them off the top of my head so they’re very “me” but not well thought out. Half of them were just puns as answers.
[] Additional Essay: Risky… very risky essay. I sent a list of “100 Beliefs” statements instead of an essay. They were in pairs of “I believe in _” “I don’t believe in ___” most of them were funny and laid back but still had symbolism.[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation 1: Did not read.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation 2: Did not read.
[] Counselor Rec: Superb, talks about my extreme involvement with my school as well as my academic achievements, personality, and the community’s view of me (all with specific examples).

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, Breadth of EC’s plus awards/leadership in most of them, Recs
[] Weaknesses:Essays were risky/didnt show enough intellectual vitality, no major awards, no standout ec, no hook
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong breadth in EC’s, test scores got my foot in the door, recs probably helped the cause. (all reasons as to why i wasn’t rejected). It’s a crapshoot (why I wasn’t accepted).

To Future Applicants: I don’t want to post all of my stats, but this website has really helped me to get an idea of the calibre of applicants/acceptees to these schools, so if anybody has specific questions regarding my application, PM me and I would love to answer them.

In my opinion, the best piece of advice I can offer is a quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet: “This above all: to thine own self be true.” I never did any extracurriculars that I disliked. If I hadn’t been accepted to Yale, I would still be able to look back at my high school years with no regrets. Live life on your own terms. A school does not define you.

By the way, don’t limit yourself on what you write in your essays. Let your voice shine through. My supplementary essay was on the art of daydreaming, and someone who read it actually said to me, “I’m not sure an Ivy League school wants a daydreamer.” I submitted it anyways. :)

And remember: be passionate.

[] Weaknesses: Race and income
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really think I had what they were looking for for the class of '16. Just hard work! Keep at it and you’ll go far!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Tufts and Boston College. Rejected UChicago, Northwestern, Duke, UCLA. Not sure why.
[/ul]General Comments:
Woohoo! So happy! Not all that surprised given my outstanding resume, but I was still ecstatic. Hope to see all of the accepted! For all of the rejected, just work hard in the future and maybe you can go to Yale for grad school.

I think you would fit in wonderfully at Harvard.

For future applicants, I will state that I doubt the truthfulness of dreamingbig245 based on being a first time poster with obviously questionable stats and other information.

.

Wrong class. I do commend your use of a double preposition however.

[/ul]General Comments: this has been my dream for years. It meant soooo much to me because I had visited my sister here a few times and loved it. I intended to major in biochem, and they have a great program. I have been destroyed by this process. I have entered a deeper slump of depression than I thought possible. Also, the 2 waitlists didn’t help my mood; I am not satisfied with where I got in. This rejection made me the first member of my family in about 5 generations (I think) to apply and get rejected because my father did not apply…I know legacy shouldn’t buy you a spot but imagine that burden combined with the usual depression of rejection. I literally dreamed way too big (obviously), and now I thoroughly hate my life :(
