Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2380
[] ACT: 35
[] SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 US History, 750 Lit
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank: 1/660
[] AP: 5’s in US, World, Art History, and Lang. 4 in Chem. 3 in French (lol)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Physics B, AP Lit, AP Euro, Newspaper, Health, Oral Communications (last two are graduation reqs)

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Newspaper (editor), Quiz Bowl (captain), Eagle Scout, Tennis team
[] Job/Work Experience: nope
[] Volunteer/Community service: Mostly done in conjunction with Scouts. Not an amazing amount though.
[] Summer Activities: nope
[] Essays: I thought they were pretty good, but who knows?
[] Teacher Recommendation: I have no idea. Probably could’ve been slightly better.
[] Counselor Rec: Great.
[] Interview: Went pretty well. Definitely didn’t hurt me, but probably didn’t help.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yup
[] Intended Major: English
[] State: Arkansas
[] School Type: pretty standard public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $100K
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): unfortunately not. Should’ve gotten better at sports.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, grades, geography
[] Weaknesses: ECs. And who knows about my recs and essays.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I just couldn’t make myself stand out. There was no compelling reason for Yale to accept me. I probably didn’t do everything that someone with my potential could have done during high school, and as a result, I was passed up by the kids who didn’t waste their talents. Honestly, those kids were just more deserving.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to those who did get in, and this year it seems like there were quite a few of you. I’m happy that I still have hope for April, as Yale is my number one choice, but I feel like I’ve started to move on this afternoon by looking at the other schools on my list and realizing how happy I can be at all of them. Best of luck to everyone, and I’m sure I’ll be back at regular decisions time for some closure.

[] Strengths: Nothing, really. My app was really average.
[] Weaknesses: The essays, SAT scores + guidance rec.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Like I said, nothing superb about my app. I’m honestly surprised I was even deferred, once I found out how my guidance councilor ranked me. (I don’t mean to sound whiny, sorry)
[/ul]General Comments: Congrats and great job to everyone accepted! To the rejected: don’t worry. I might not have a high post count, but I’ve read enough CC to know that awesome futures still await you all. This goes for the rest of us deferred folks too. Cheers.

Tally on the results, adding onto post #121

Accepted 44 (32%)
Deferred 85 (62%)
Rejected 8 (6%)

It is truly humbling to read the posts since 5pm. There have been so many exceptional candidates deferred and rejected that it is hard to understand how some of us were accepted. Good luck to all of you in RD. I hope to see many of you at Yale.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t Send but 1800
[] ACT: 29
[] SAT II: US-720 Chem-640 Math ii-600 (self-reported US only)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Not sure, but on the 100 point scale I have a 93.83
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 6/442
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US [4] Lang [4] Chem
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP US Gov & Pol, AP Lit, AP Environmental, AP Studio Art-2D, Research, Health, Gym
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Several research awards in the regional, state, national, and international level. Grant winner from MIT, and Youth Venture. Rensselaer Medal Merit Award, Intel STS applicant.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Research (team leader), NHS (secretary), Student Government (Historian), Varsity Swimming, Varsity Tennis, Varsity Golf.
[] Job/Work Experience: Have, but didn’t mention any
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutor, volunteer throughout the community and school through NHS and student government.
[] Summer Activities: Research at competitive research program for two years.
[] Essays: Common App was about my sister who I met when I was 7 (she was 14). Received positive feedback from my guidance counselor, friends, and my sister cried when she red it. My English teachers thought it wasn’t focused on me, however. My Yale personal statement focused on the barriers my school has put me through. My short responses received great feedback from everyone I showed.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Saw them for use for scholarships, and they were phenomenal. I am so appreciative of both of them.
[] Counselor Rec: Never read it, but I think it was pretty well. She was really confident in me since day 1.
[] Additional Rec: Should have sent a mentor rec, but didn’t.
[li] Interview: It went pretty well. She talked about herself more, but I was able to convey who I was through it.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yea
[] Intended Major: Environmental Studies
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: ~$40,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first male in family to attend college
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Research Experience, Essays, Recommendations
[] Weaknesses: ACT scores
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I was able to succeed despite the environment I come from (majority don’t attend college, low-income). Although my test scores are below average, I showed that I excelled in areas I put time and effort in. I think that my entire app conveyed my ability to succeed, desire to venture out into the world, and my determination help my community.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
I am still in shock. I am still shacking. I can’t believe it. When I saw congrats and heard the song, I fell onto my knees crying and thanking God for how grateful I am for Him. I know a lot of people will read this and get mad because my scores make me “unqualified” and the only reason I got in is because I am a minority, but just take a look at my accomplishments and take in consideration where I live, and you will realize I can/will/did succeed. Scores are not everything, and I am so glad that Yale understands that. I am totally blessed.

[] Strengths: My volunteer work, grades, essays, UIL stuff, NMS standing…
[] Weaknesses: On the last part of the application, where you give your online signature, I accidentally left off the last letter of my last name. I saw it a nanosecond after I pressed submit. OOPS. Also, I didn’t have a hook, my SAT II scores were bad, and my high school isn’t competitive.
[li] Why you think you were accepted: I have no idea, but I’m so glad I was.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Praise God!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2350: 800 CR 770 M 780 W
[] SAT II: Lit 800 Math 2 800 US 790 Chem 780 Spanish 740 Math 1 730 Bio 700 World History 690

[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc, Chem, Lit, all 5s
[] Senior Year Course Load: Toughest possible at my school, 5 APs 2 honors
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some photo awards that were pretty well known
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mock Trial, GSA, School Newspaper, School Yearbook, Lots of photography stuff, Have written for a local news website, some other stuff
[] Job/Work Experience: Nope
[] Volunteer/Community service: A few hours at marriage equality organization
[] Summer Activities: Art programs at Pratt and Risd, another program in Paris
[] Essays: I dont’ want to brag but I’m pretty sure my common app essay was really stellar-- made my mom, some friends cry. It was really just telling the story of my relationship with a very close family friend, I don’t want to explain it more than that, but I really tried to convey how close I am with this person and really tell our story. I really did not write much explicitly about how it influenced my life, it was more implied. For the supplemental essay, I wrote one about my photography which is actually sort of imaginative (without going too much into it, I stage these sort of absurdist photographs).
[] Teacher Recommendation: Pretty sure they were stellar
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty sure it was stellar
[] Additional Rec: From my art/photography teacher, once again, pretty sure it was stellar
[] Interview: It went great, we talked for an hour and a half and I was able to talk about alot of my more academic interests (philosophy, for one)
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: nope
[] Intended Major: Philosophy
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Competitive Private
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: high income
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): talked about being gay in my short answer for common app? don’t know if that is a “hook”
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Photography (submitted a portfolio), Essays, teacher recs, wide variety of unique intellectual interests which I think really came through
[] Weaknesses: GPA seemed somewhat low
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I worked really hard on trying to make my essay really well rounded and paint a picture of myself, thinking hard about which aspect each essay reflected of myself, etc. So, my common app essay was really all about my personality. My supplement essay was about my artistic side. I did not talk about my intellectual passions directly and instead left that up to my teachers and college counselor. In a sense, there was very little overlap, and I think that ended up making it all come together really really well.[/li][/ul]General Comments:
So happy to be accepted! Will still apply to a few schools but chances are I will be a Yalie next fall
I decided to post this because I want to show people that GPA IS NOT EVERYTHING!! I saw all these 4.0s and got freaked out, but as you can see a great (but not perfect) GPA is just fine! It’s much more about your overall person than your scores or gpa, etc. I don’t think you have to be super unique, you just have to really be a well rounded person. And you have to make sure your application reflects all parts of yourself. Congrats to all accepted, and good luck to those deferred!

I got a big D, and not the fun kind. Hopefully April looks better.

Deferred.

Never coming back to this board. Congrats to y’all who got in.

wantstoleave…glad you’re so excited about your acceptance, i totally understand, i was 1st gen college myself 2 decades ago, and was thrilled to get in, honored to attend. don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but i do want you to consider something.

re: scores…if an applicant takes a bunch of SAT 2’s, and then reports (officially or not) ANY of them, then yale expect to see ALL of them. because yale does not accept score choice, and they ask their applicants not to use score choice. holding some scores back, and self-reporting one, that’s nor their intent when they instituted their no score choice policy.

they rely on everyone to follow that guideline. just something to think about.

because you can’t really say that scores don’t always matter if you, in truth, held back some scores that you thought would hurt you, don’t you think?

if I have misunderstood your score strategy in any way, i apologize.
