[li] Why you think you were deferred: They probably want to see how I do with my senior year course load before making a decision, and I’m not an outstanding applicant.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I read this thread around 11:00 PM on the 15th before checking my decision, and was surprised not to have been rejected. (Well, my sister did this fantastic job of yelling “YOU’RE NOT GETTING INTO YALE” whenever she would see me for two weeks before decisions came out, to ease the pain of rejection if it happened, so this might have lowered my self-esteem a bit.)

I am going to take this deferral as a compliment. The best university in the USA and possibly the world told me that they are still interested and that I have a competitive application. I totally understand that there are better applicants, and that they want to see how I do with my senior year courseload. Though it would have been nice to have been admitted, I am not upset.

To all the accepted: Congratulations.
To all the deferred: Take it as a compliment.
To all the rejected: If you have the competitive stats to apply EA, then you’ll definitely get in somewhere great. Best of luck!

Sorry this took so long, but I did pledge, and hopefully it will at least help future applicants.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]

[] Summer Activities: intense gymnastics training, summer camp counselor
[] Essays: worked on them for over 3 months, I’d say they were good, not absolutely excellent. Also, both were over the limit. The commonapp one was about 620 and the supp was about 700 maybe 750, but everyone that read said that I shouldn’t take anything out.
[] Teacher Recommendation: good, not excellent, probably pretty typical (didn’t read). They were also both from similar subject areas, which I kind of regret.
[] Counselor Rec: It was a summarization of EC’s, but nice. She had me proof read it for her. She loves me, but she’s not the brightest and not very experienced, so it wasn’t amazing.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: extracurriculars- gymnastics, environmental focus
[] Weaknesses: TEST SCORES. Across the board- SAT, SAT II’s and AP. ick
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: it’s college admissions…
[/ul]General Comments: I was not as disappointed as I thought I would be.

I’ve never posted on this website, so I wasn’t going to post my stats, but I found it really helpful (although sometimes depressing) to look at other people’s stats while I was applying, so… :]

[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b]
Congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to everyone deferred! I never expected to actually get in; I am so happy. :]

Silverturtle: just for the sake of curiosity, did you mention in your app that you were the author of the college admission guide?
Coming back to my question regarding yield protection, I observe that there are many admits in the 2100-2290 range. I do not have of course all the admitted students stats, but aren’t they admitting people who are less likely to be accepted at H or P ?

^^This canard is all over CC lately. Yale does not practice yield protection; it doesn’t need to. It has one of the highest yields around, and it is confident that most students it admits are strongly interested in attending. Of course not every student admitted SCEA to Yale will choose Yale, and many of those who don’t enroll will choose one of Yale’s peer schools. But Yale admits who it wants, does its best to court admitted students, and lets the chips fall where they may.

Curious how Yale could be accepting more students with lower scores and still end up with (slightly) higher overall new student SAT ranges than H and P. The prescience the admissions office has to know just which high scoring students they need to “protect” themselves from is remarkable.

Completely agree with above. There is NO argument for Yale to admit people who are less likely to get admitted elsewhere. None at all.

Why? Lets say that they did, and we have awesome101 man deferred from Yale. He then does not like Yale, and when - being awesome - he is accepted by H P and then eventually Y he will go to H/P. However, if Y had accepted him EA then they could have courted him for 4 months and he would have loved them for it and he would attend.

Why would Yale, certainly in the top 5ish universities in the world accept mediocre (ok 2100-2290 is by no means mediocre) students in there pool?

*** start rant

Anyone arguing “yield protection” to justify their deferral is either massively arrogant to assume admission or just practising self delusion.

I have mentioned this in another post, SAT scores are not the be all and end all. In a 5 minute stat posting on CC you CANNOT judge applicants any more specifically than ‘ball parking’. So, yes, a good percentage of students WILL have 2100-2290 SAT scores cos Yale’s IQ range is 2100-2370.

end ***

No, I didn’t mention CC at all; I figured that it would be risky.

Decision: Accepted

I don’t do stats, sorry.

I did not apply to Yale: I am still a junior. My point is not to justify my deferral. I am only puzzled by the decisions I see on this thread and I observe that great candidates like silver are deferred which strikes me.

^silver’s deferral may have been like christiansoldier’s: a robotic perfection may have, absurdly, dehumanized him and rendered him less desirable.

Silver is just one case among many high scorers being deferred while many candidates with scores in the range 2100-2290 are accepted. My point is absolutely not to belittle the achievements of those accepted, but I think that these candidates are less likely to receive multiple admissions from the HYP, thus my initial post

I don’t think so. Yale receives many of the most quantitatively impressive applicants in the country, so I can’t imagine them being responding in that way just because they see good scores and grades. Jersey13, after all, was accepted.

“being responding”

Woops. :)

ACT – 34
Class Rank – 12/287
GPA (not weighted) – 3.98
I don’t really feel compelled to list all of my activities – they vary so much from person to person. I will say, however, that I am an award winning tuba player and that I am actively involved in community service. My best advice for those of you who have yet to submit your application is to be absolutely truthful in your depiction of yourself. That way, you’ll know for a fact that, in the event you are accepted, the Admissions Committee wants to have YOU there. Best of luck to all RD applicants!

Yale accepting those with 2100-2290 scores instead of 2300+ or perfect scores just goes to show that there’s so much more to an applicant than just test scores. Also, part of it is just sheer luck. So many of the applicants are absolutely amazing whether you’re talking about extracurriculars, or grades, or test scores, that in the end there’s really no way to predict who will get accepted and who won’t.

anyone else get a personalized email from their area admissions officer? I’m surprised, though he must be lucky because there were only about 5-6 people from my state so he didn’t have too many emails to send :)
