Official Yale Class of 2016 RD Results Thread

Deferred -> Accepted, Stats on SCEA thread.

Between then and now, I took two weeks off of school to tutor at an inner city choice school (worked into my school’s curriculum), got a 7th semester 4.0, increased my SAT to a 2320, and scored a 96/100 with the school jazz band in a national competition. Must have helped.

Even so, I have to chalk it up to luck. Everyone that I’ve seen here is just as qualified as I am, if not more so. Best of luck to all.

For me, though… Yale '16. It still doesn’t seem real.

Rejected- After trying to get my decision online for several hours, gave up and checked this morning. All the other schools were able to post their decisions online when they said they would. FORGET YALE! I’m admitted to two other great schools with scholarships, and I’ve heard mostly bad regarding New Haven and East New Haven it seems the best thing about Yale would have been leaving New Haven. Total let down. Tell the recruiters to stay home since they get an overwhelming number of great applicants. They don’t need to build hope where there was never any that a great student doesn’t have a chance. Good bye Yale, nice to never meet you!

Decision: Rejected

[] Essays: I loved my commonapp main (which won a Scholastic Gold Medal this year). My Yale supplement was strong, but some of the short takes and the “Why Yale?” prompt were a bit awkward.
[] Teacher Recommendations: If not strong, decent. Both from teachers who have taught me for 3yrs and know me well. (did not see)
[] Counselor Recommendation: She likes me. Probably not that impressive, though :stuck_out_tongue: (did not see)
[] Additional Recommendation: None.
[] Interview (Alumni): Not terrible, but definitely the worst of all my interviews. He asked me several uncomfortable questions, such as what company my parents work for and whether I was taking x master courses while in China to visit relatives, because, “it seems like everyone’s doing that nowadays.” When I was asking genuine questions about the literary community/opportunities at Yale, he said, “You don’t have to keep digging for questions if you don’t have any.” Womp.
[] Art Supplement: Slam poetry recordings!

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate 9th-12th grade (captain), Envirothon 10-12 (captain), school service society 9-12 (VP), NHS 10-12 (VP); The first 3 are the ones I have dedicated myself to in school over the years, it would take a while to describe the things I do in each of them, but I am very active in these ECs.
[] Job/Work Experience: none, applied for some jobs, didn’t get them >.<
[] Volunteer/Community service: worked with a non-profit in New Orleans rebuilding houses, volunteer at food pantry, tutor at local middle school, volunteer for local state representative, and the school service society could be considered community service (we run monthly schoolwide food drives that go to the aforementioned food pantry)
[] Summer Activities: volunteering at food pantry, camp CIT, etc.
[] Essays: Common App was a little abstract, fairly personal, not sure how admissions officers would’ve responded to it; my Yale supplemental was kind of bad (I wrote my good essays over Christmas break, for my RD schools).
[] Teacher Recommendation: don’t know, didn’t ask for or read, but I have very good relationships with the teachers I asked
[] Counselor Rec: don’t know, didn’t ask for or read
[] Additional Rec: Envirothon coach, it would’ve been very good
[li] Interview: first had an on-campus interview, was mediocre. I was offered an alumni interview in early march (a pretty late request, interviewer said that adcoms asked him to add me last minute), and that went extremely well (2.5 hours long), I thought maybe on that basis I could get in, but guess not.
[/li]

[] State (if domestic applicant): CT
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Catholic
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese-American)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: just barely don’t qualify for FA
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: objective stats, interview
[] Weaknesses: overall solid app, but I had nothing that really stood out or anything in particular, and my supplement and essays for Yale were poor compared to my essays to other schools
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: mediocre Yale supplemental
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Harvard acceptance, UPenn (Wharton) accept, Dartmouth likely letter, Swarthmore early write acceptance, Northwestern accept, Duke accept, Williams waitlist, thus far

[/ul]General Comments:

Obviously, rejections are disappointing. Yale was one of my top choices, even after SCEA deferral, and I really thought that after my late-request alum interview that I had a very good chance of getting in. Everybody at my school got rejected, which we feel is kind of odd, considering that we have a very strong class this year and many other top acceptances…idk, maybe unfortunately we’re being blackballed?

However, I found out about my Yale rejection after I found out about my Harvard acceptance  so yea…I’m not losing sleep over it. Congrats to everyone who got in!

Decision: Rejected

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Just small local awards-- PC Fellow, National merit, Student of the Month, Youth of the Season at my youth group, Degree of Outstanding Distinction in NFL, etc.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): American Red Cross Youth (member for 6 years; Secretary for 3, current President; CPR / First Aid certified instructor, helped the group continue after the recession took its facilitator away; hosted two successful Youth Leadership Conferences for a total of over 250 teens throughout the state; community service projects each month ranging from Special Olympics to Safe Harbor to a local nursing center), NHS / Interact (Co-President), Student Council (Senior Secretary), Newspaper (Co-Editor), Forensics (Secretary; NFL qualifier, District Champion, ToC qualifier, Degree of Outstanding Distinction), Youth in Government (4-time legislator, MUN resource staff, other conferences, selected to attend CONA), Film Club-- Upstate Youth Film Festival Assistant Director, Youth Leadership Greenville class participant
[] Job/Work Experience: /
[] Volunteer/Community service: See above
[] Summer Activities: Took Calculus at local college, attended college summer camps, Red Cross, became a CPR / First Aid instructor
[] Essays: I thought they were good. My personal essay was on red hair-- evidently they don’t like gingers. My extracurric essay was obviously on Red Cross, but perhaps I was too impersonal in that one. My supplemental Princeton one sucked because I wanted to apply early and didn’t put enough time into it. I thought my Harvard and Yale ones were phenomenal. They were about how I lived my life trying to be something greater than just me and how I wanted to start a legacy of my own.
[] Teacher Recommendations: I’d guess they were good. They love me.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably average.
[] Additional Rec: From American Red Cross CEO who I have worked with-- apparently very well written according to someone from last year who got one from her
[li] Interview: Caught of guard with some of the questions. He asked me if I could name the professors in my major of choice.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): SC
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: No financial aid
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, besides a series of letters I wrote beforehand letting them know I was going to try my best to be accepted signed Legacy Man. I also transferred to the IB school after my sophomore year-- showing commitment to take opportunity.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: The fact is none of my statistics are stellar, and that is what they are looking for. All of my application was good. Nothing was great.
[] Weaknesses: I should have taken the SAT more than once and superscored made over 2300. I should have taken more SAT IIs and retaken the Math II one because it was very low. My rank could have been higher. Also, I am not good at boasting about myself-- perhaps a problem with my application was I didn’t elaborate quite enough on my accomplishments with the Conferences I’ve organized and leadership I’ve exhibited in the community. Advice to anyone reading this: CAPITALIZE ON THE SPACE GIVEN.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My school has always had a very good relationship with Ivies. Last year, members of the senior class were accepted into every Ivy. This year, one person got into Penn. That’s it. Who knows? Maybe they had too many people from this area already. Besides that, there was just nothing above and beyond to distinguish me from anyone else. As simple as that. Even if there had been, I still would have needed to get extremely lucky to be accepted.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Princeton (EA deferred, then rejected), Brown, Columbia, UPenn, Dartmouth, Cornell
Waitlisted: Vanderbilt, UNC Chapel Hill
Accepted: Duke, USC H, Clemson H, Furman, Emory

[/ul]

**General Comments: ** I mean, I look at all these people who were rejected and think to myself what the hell-- how would I have gotten in anyway? Gradually the Ivies are going to lose their prestige. There are simply too many qualified people to be students at Ivies, and all of these people will end up at other schools that will become more competitive as well as time goes on. It was so demoralizing getting rejected from all 8 Ivies. I certainly wasn’t expecting much, but I thought I would at least get into one. At least I got into Duke with a 5% acceptance rate and with a ranking above some of the Ivies anyway. I look back on the past four years of my life, grateful for the opportunity I took and the decisions I made and the work I put into my community, but I have to offer some advice. It really isn’t worth all the stress just to get into an Ivy-- because you can be the best candidate they could ever possibly have and then still not get in.

[] Income Bracket: doesnt make a difference
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope!
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:clear pursuit
[] Weaknesses: test scores (for an asian), weird recs (?)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: honestly no idea, fully and completely expected (and prepared) to be rejected
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - Harvard, UPenn, Dartmouth, Duke, Cornell, Vanderbilt, UofA; Waitlisted - Georgetown; Rejected - Princeton, Brown
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
Even though i’m a Harvard/Yale cross-admit, i believe that admissions is 50% skill, 50% luck. There is never a clear reason why you are admitted or not (unless they specifically tell you or you’re incredible in an incredible way). I cried for years and rewrote all my apps after being deferred. I applied to random schools just because I was afraid of not getting in anywhere, because it can happen and has happened. My advice is to never think too much of yourself, whether accepted or not. After all, when RD acceptance rates have plunged to 3%, you’ve got as good as a chance of surviving in the Hunger Games. And everyone knows, I would not survive. lol, GOOD LUCK!

Just realized I said I didn’t have an interview for Yale when I did (post #34). It went really well, I think. It felt like a casual conversation and it was quite an interesting and enjoyable one. Discussed the difficulties of being perceived as a good leader as an introvert, introversion in general, and some other topics I can’t remember off the top of my head.

S got deferred and then rejected.

A legacy applicant with SAT 2370 (first attempt), SAT II 800 on 3 subjects, one major award in an international awards and many other great EC activities (in my opinion). His essays were stellar. Unfortunately, he is an asian boy.

I am certain that he will have a great college experience at Harvard. What an irony.

I am far more disappointed than he is. Hope Yale Admission Office knows what they are doing.

Decision: Rejected

[] Job/Work Experience: Baby Sitting 20-40 hours a week (10, 11, 12)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering at local library (150 hrs)
[] Summer Activities:Baby sitting, attending classes at local community college, volunteering, participating in summer library activities.
[] Essays: I thought they were pretty good, I liked them.
[] Teacher Recommendation: From teachers at the college I attend, I was one of the top students in Pre-Cal, and the top student in the Physics class. Both teachers liked me.
[] Counselor Rec: From my mom, since I’m home-schooled.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: I thought it went pretty well.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): TX
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public school (9th), Home-school (10, 11, 12), College (11,12)
[] Ethnicity:White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: under 20,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:Unique schooling, good essays, decent grades.
[] Weaknesses: My ACT score, that my teachers only get to know me for 16 weeks so bonds made are not as strong as most students can get. That being home schooled didn’t allow for many leadership positions in clubs. Not having the ability to volunteer more, or be more interactive with activities.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It’s a great school, and I had many disadvantages against me, I knew it would be a HUGE reach. I just really liked the school, and their program for letting students with family incomes under 60,000 attend there for tuition and room/board for free.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected: Stanford, Rice. Accepted: University of Texas-Austin.
[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who did get accepted! And it’s not so bad that I got rejected, if I would’ve attended any of my schools besides UT, I would not have transferred any of my college credits (And since I’ll have about 60 credit hours by the time of my hs graduation, at least I’ll get to graduate earlier than most. And I can always apply to a better school for grad school :).) To everyone who was rejected like me, just stay positive! Everything will work out.

Counselor Rec: Generic
Additional Rec: Law Firm Partner who oversees my work

Reflection
Strengths: Overall character that I feel came through recs, essays and ecs. Academics were solid too.
Weaknesses: SATs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I am very surprised I was waitlisted and not a flat-out reject. Though my stats were very low, I was very proactive in the process and worked really hard on my application.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected: Northwestern Accepted: Georgetown SFS, Wellesley, UVA, William & Mary, Emory Waitlisted: Columbia, Duke

General Comments: This process is unfair. I am disappointed about being waitlisted at Duke & Columbia but actually very happy/surprised to see this waitlisted, compared to many other applicants here who were rejected and seemed to deserve a spot on the WL more than me.

It’s trite to say we’ll all be successful wherever we go, and I still cringe when people say that after I tell them about my WLs, but I know it must be true. Good luck to everyone!

For the sake of the Pledge Thread, I was rejected after being deferred :(

I was accepted to UChicago, Duke, Brown, WashU, JHU BME, and Wesleyan. Also waitlisted at Harvard and Columbia. Rejected from P,S,Y,M. Happy with my results. Being deferred is definitely a good sign for other colleges I think.

Congrats to everyone who got in!
